Inscription: "Brother" - Research Note: He was a son of James M. Jones and Molly J. Metcalf, both born VA. Typhoid fever was the cause of death. - October 26, 1911, Cassville Republican - In Memory: At half past 12 o'clock Monday, Oct. 16th, 1911, death made his way into the home of James Jones of Clark and claimed for his own their loving son Otis, age 17 years and 9 days, born Oct. 7th, 1894. Otis was a young man of promise just entering into manhood and the prime of the life with the prospects of a long and useful career which seemed to some of us very flattering when alas! that dread scourge of our race, typhoid fever overtook him. After several weeks of patient suffering his sprit took its flight to the blessed abode beyond this vale of tears where sorrow and sighing shall be felt and feared no more. Otis was a good boy. He was in industrious, honest, truthful and social and his unexpected departure is a sad disappointment to his family, kindred and friends. He leaves a father and step mother. His own dear mother having preceded him to the glory world several years ago. He leaves two brothers, Joe and Dow, and one half brother and two sisters, Hattie and Velma, and four half sisters to mourn their loss and a host of other relatives and friends was in evidence at the funeral services in the Clark school house close by the Jones residence Oct. 17th, which would in no way hold the anxious attentive and serious congregation waiting to see and hear the last benediction of him whom we loved and respected. Funeral services were conduced by Ray Angles. A number of his young men associates were the bearers of the casket which was covered with flowers taken of the love and esteem in which Otis was held. | Headstone Roger Longley Death Certificate Online Newspapers Phyllis Long Photo Darla Marbut |

June 7, 1920 MO |
Inscription: "Age 87 years" - Research Note: Obit: Metcalf - Mrs. Geo. Peerson returned home Wednesday from Purdy, Mo., where she had been at the bedside of her sick father, who passed away Monday evening, June 7, at 6:30 o'clock. The death angle visited the home of J. M. Jones of Purdy, Mo., and claimed one among the noblest and sweetest fathers on earth. Hiram Metcalf was born January 2, 1833, died June 7, 1920, age 87 years, 5 months, and 5 days. He was born and reared in Laurel County, Kentucky and was married to Mary Ann Gabbard, who preceded him to the home of eternal life 36 years ago. He united with the Primitive Baptist Church when a young man and has lived a pure and steadfast Christian life in love for his Master. He traveled the rugged paths of life and until time to cast all burdens away and the Good Lord said, "Come," he was ready with the bright face of an angel to welcome the eternal rest. He requested his children to be good to each other as he could not take them with him. There was not one flower that covered his casket that was more pure and sweeter than his noble life. He left nine children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his departure, but we feel our loss is for his eternal gain. Bro. Goodnight of Purdy had charge of the funeral services which was delivered in the pure spirit. Deceased was a Union soldier in the Civil War, was 1st Lieut. in Co. E, 47th Regiment of Kentucky of Capt. H. J. Clark's infantry volunteers. He was grandfather to 73 grand children, 101 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. His grandchildren acted as pall bearers. - Patty's Family History: Hiram served in the Union Army in the Civil War and was wounded in the legs by three bullets from Confederate soldiers. Hiram was delivering a message on a mule while crossing the Tennessee River when this occurred. Even though he was wounded, he made it to his company. Hiram and Mary Ann lived part of the time around Irvine and Ravenna in Estill County, Kentucky. Hiram later moved to Barry County, Missouri, about 5 miles west of Exeter, MO. Part of the family stayed in Kentucky. Elijah, Elisha and five girls went with them to Missouri. Sarah Frances was 8 yrs. old when they left Pennington Gap, Kentucky for Missouri in about 1886. In his later years he lived with his youngest daughter, Sarah Frances Jones until his death at 87 years old. Ralph Metcalf, one of Hiram's great grandsons, said he remembered sitting on his great grandfathers lap and playing with his beard, which came almost to his waist and also his ear trumpet that he used when talking to people, because he was hard of hearing. He died in the 1920's and was buried in the Clark Cemetery, 4 miles west of Butterfield, MO. Five sons were born to Hiram and Mary: Elijah, Elisha, John, Ruben and Henry. They also had 4 daughters: Martha, Phina, Emily, and Frances. All the children are now dead, except Frances. Hiram and his family chartered a railroad car and moved to Butterfield, MO in about 1888 and settled 4 miles west of Butterfield. Hiram was 6 ft. tall, had dark hair, black eyes. He knew Daniel Boone. He belonged to the Baptist Church. Civil War Pension No. 870437 A First Lieutenant in Company E, 47th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. Married Nov. 8, 1850, that record is in the clerks office at London, KY. Discharged at Lexington, KY Dec. 1864. A long statement was made in 1888 in Lexington, KY by H. C. Clarn, a Captain in the 47th Volunteers. He states that Hiram Metcalf was a First Lt. of said company. Mr. Clarn also remembers that from Nov. to Dec. of 1863 they were encamped at Nelson, KY. Hiram was sick with Yellow Jaundice and a long statement regarding his health condition was incorporated in this official document. Hiram Metcalf made a declaration for Civil War Service pension in Barry County, MO. on the 28th of March 1892. Once again on the 22nd of Jan. 1908, at the age of 76, he filed another official statement. This document states that he was enlisted in Estill County, KY and that he moved to Barry County, MO in 1889 where he still resides. - Another Photo | Headstone Roger Longley Obit Note Photo Patty McWilliams Photo Darla Marbut |

REED, Nellie Louise (MUTRUX) | Dec. 16, 1896 Purdy, Barry Co., MO |
Dec. 11, 1963 At Home, Wheaton, Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: Daughter of Charles Augusta Mutrux and Alna Marie DeCocq. She was the wife of Wesley Ommer "Homer" Reed. Mrs. Lamoine England of Exeter, MO was the informant on the death certificate. Cause of death was overdose of carbitols. - Wheaton Journal, Dec. 12, 1963 - MRS NELLIE REED FOUND DEAD: Mrs. Nellie Reed, widow of Homer Reed, was found dead in bed at 8:30 p. m. Wednesday in her home in the northwest part of town. Mrs. Reed called her sister, Mrs. Mae Reed, who also resides in Wheaton, at 8 p. m. and said only a few words, but indicated she was ok. Mrs. Reed, however was concerned about her sister and telephoned her about 15 minutes later and she failed to answer. She then called a neighbor of her sister, Mrs. Mary Kimbrough, and ask her to check on her sister. Hazel Kimbrough, daughter of Mrs. Kimbrough, went to the Reed home and found the lights out and the front screen door hooked. Mrs. Mae Reed then called Rev. H. Everett Anthony, pastor of the Baptist Church, who came and got her and they went to the Reed home. In the meantime Miss Kimbrough had notified Joe C. Schell, who was at the Reed House when Rev. Anthony and Mrs. Mae Reed arrived. Rev. Anthony cut a hole in the screen wire to open the screen door and the inside door was not locked. When they entered the house they found the body in bed with the covers pulled up over her. This was about 8:30 o'clock. Funeral director Morris Pogue was called and the coroner Doyle Williamson of Cassville was called. No inquest was held and he determined Mrs. Reed had died about 8:15. The body was received by the Pogue Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday after noon at 2 o'clock at the Wheaton Baptist Church of which she was a member. Burial will be in the Clark Cemetery, east of Wheaton. | Headstone Roger Longley Online Obit Note Don Warner Death Certificate Phyllis Long Photo Darla Marbut |
REED, Ommer Junior | Jan. 29, 1925 Barry Co., MO |
Feb. 29, 1932 Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: Wheaton Journal, March 4, 1932 - Ommer Junior Reed, son of Ommer and Nellie Reed, of near Clark School house was born Jan. 29, 1925 and died Feb. 29, 1932, at the age of 7 years, 1 month and 2 days. He leaves to mourn his passing his parents, three sisters, three brothers, both grandmothers, one grandfather, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. Junior was a kind and lovable child. While he has gone from the scenes, the conflicts, sorrows and pleasures of this life he will still live in the hearts of those who knew him best, and we dare not ask why he was taken from us, unless as flowers that are picked before the frost finds them that we may not witness their decay. It is sad, indeed, to see one taken so early in life, yet for him there was no standing on the boarder land gazing into the unknown. But now he will sleep where the daisies and the clover hangs its head, where the song birds come and the wild bees hum above his head. His memories will live in all our hearts and we will hold it ever dear. Services were conduced at the Mt. Pleasant Church Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 2 o'clock by Rev. Ollie Ennis of Monett. The little body was laid to rest in the Clark Cemetery under the direction of Pogue's Undertaking Service. | Headstone Roger Longley Online Obit Photo Darla Marbut |

REED, Wesley Ommer "Homer" | Jan. 1, 1898 MO |
Nov. 22, 1949 Rural Liberty Twp., Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: According to his death certificate his father was George Reed and his wife was Nellie Louisa Reed. Ella Haynes was given as his mother's name. His death was caused by a shot in the abdominal region - was an accident, crossing a fence with a gun. Sibyl Mae England was the informant, Exeter. - Wheaton Journal, Thursday, Nov. 24 1949 - ACCIDENTALLY KILLS SELF WITH SHOT GUN: W. O. (Ommer) Reed, 51 years old, was killed suddenly Tuesday afternoon at his farm home on Shoal Creek, 6 miles southeast of Wheaton, when the full charge from a 12 gauge shot gun struck him in the chest. He was dead when his wife found him a short distance from the house where the gun had been accidentally discharged as Mr. Reed was crossing a barb wire fence. Mrs. Reed related that a woodpecker had been annoying them by pecking on the house. Mr. Reed remarked that he would get his gun and kill the bird. Mrs. Reed went about her work in the kitchen and in just a few minutes she heard a shot and presumed her husband was shooting at the bird. However, when he failed to return to the house she went in search of him and found him dead. Mr. Reed had apparently leaned the gun against the fence, climbed over the fence and then started to pick up the gun with the muzzle pointed towards his body. In some manner it was discharged with the muzzle of the barrel near the center of his chest. Corner Paul Henbest was called but after he viewed the body he did not hold an inquest as every indication pointed to an accidental death. The body was removed to the Pogue Funeral Home here in Wheaton to await funeral arrangements, which are incomplete at present. Surviving are his widow, Miss Nellie Reed; six children, Mrs. Alton Howard, Cameron Mo., Mrs. LeRoy Shrum, Orange Cove Calif., Mrs. Lamonie England, Exeter Mo., Truman Reed, Stockton Calif., Adrian Reed, Kansas City, Mo. And Barbara, at home, and one brother, Ellsworth Reed of Yakima, Wash. | Headstone Roger Longley Death Certificate Donna Cooper Online Obit Phyllis Long Photo Darla Marbut |
