McKinney, 7, Virginia, Female; Paris G. McKinney, 4, Virginia, Male; Thomas K. McKinney, 3, Virginia, Male; Matilda McKinney, 1, Virginia, Female. - Story of James' death from findagrave.com: The following information is extrapolated from "Blankenship Ancestors" by Gayle King Blankenship: One morning in the late 1870's, James H. and 2 of his older sons were going to go hunting in the meadows of King Prairie, Missouri (now Monett, Missouri) for venison. Ira, who was about 5 years old at the time, had asked his father if he could also go. J.H. finally said okay, thinking that little Ira could hold his ammo. The 4 of them left and went through a clearing (on the other side of some woods). A few hours passed and they didn't see a deer. J.H. finally told his 2 older sons to go on up ahead to see if they could get some better luck. Now J.H. and Ira were left behind. James did not like to hunt with a long rifle (like most people of the time did). He used a single shot revolver that he had received from a relative as a boy. This particular gun was very powerful. He could shoot prey from at least 50 yards. Ira and J.H. were waiting by some brush when they heard a noise. A deer had come out of the woods. J.H. was able to shoot and kill this deer. He then heard another noise thinking it might be another deer, so he reloaded his weapon and waited. When nothing else came by, he placed his cocked gun into his waist. J.H. then proceeded over to the dead deer and bent over to start tying it up, when suddenly the cocked gun fell out of his waist and hit a rock making the gun to discharge. The bullet entered his groin area and traveled through his body, exiting out his shoulder. The 2 older sons heard the shot and ran to J.H. and Ira. Somehow, they were able to move their father to the road and a neighbor who had a wagon finally came by. They loaded J.H. into the wagon, but James Harrison Mckinney died before they could get him home. (Note: Even though this was a very tragic accident, his wife (Julia Ann Blankenship) was left with 15 children to raise. She must have been devastated "to the core".) | Census Story Phyllis Long Photo Jay Trace |
