Research Note: Not sure if Jackson was a maiden name or not. Name on death certificate was Sarah Jackson Crume. Widowed twice. Daughter of Andrew J. and Lamanda Jane (Shipley) Crume. Mrs. Claude Hadley of Monett, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - Monett Times, January 6, 1956 - SARAH J. CRUME DIES WEDNESDAY - Retired Rural Mail Carrier In Barry County - Mrs. Sarah Jackson Crume, 91-year-old retired rural mail carrier, died at her home on King's Prairie southeast of Monett at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning following a two weeks illness. Mrs. Crume, familiarly known as "Aunt Sarah," carried mail from Marionville to the old Flat Creek post office which used to be located in the eastern part of Barry county from 1906 to 1910. Her means of transportation while a mail carrier was a horse-drawn hack. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Claudie Hadley of King's Prairie, five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Culver Funeral Home in Cassville with Rev. Winford Davis officiating. Burial was in the Bethel Baptist Cemetery. - Chapter XVII - Pioneer Life - Sarah Crume, Star Route Mail Carrier - Lawrence County's first and only female Star Route U. S. mail carrier was Sarah Crume of Marionville. Her mother, Lamanda Crume was a Civil War widow and moved her family of seven children from IL by ox cart to Marionville in 1867. Sarah had three children, Ella May, Abner, and Marie who sometimes accompanied her on the route. She carried the mail under contract and was bonded by three bondsmen from 1901 till 1909. Four teams of OK broncos were alternated on the buggy or hack she used on the route from Marionville to Carney's store and post office SE of Jenkins with three post offices en route at Bonham store in Lawrence Co., Osa, and Scholten stores in Barry Co., as was Carney's at the south terminus, and several mail boxes along the route. The round trip was 44 miles and the schedule was so close she had to trot the tough little range horses to meet the train on the return trip to home base at Marionville. The trip was so hard a team required three days rest before another haul and no draft horse could endure or make the schedule. She delivered small purchases when housewives along her route ordered a spool of thread or various needs. She had occasional passengers and was Huckleberry merchant. She later kept only two teams, one at each terminus using both one way each day. When Flat creek was high so buggy couldn't ford it, she would swim a big horse owned by Tom Jordan across with the mail bag on her shoulder. After her contract was up, she continued farming, with this fine team purchased from Ben Stubblefield of McDowell. Sarah was born 1863 and died 1956. - According to the 1910 census Marie Crume is the daughter of Sarah Crume and was born in Indiana. The father is unknown. The 1930 census lists Sarah as being divorced. Possibly she was married to someone named Brandstetter or Adams, or both. One family tree lists two more children: Ella Mae Crume, born 20 July 1881 and died 7 July 1901, father named Branstetter, and Abner Branstetter Crume, born Sept 24 1884, died 1901. - Sarah's father, Andrew J. Crume, died at Camp Butler, Montgomery, Illinois, of cholera during civil war. Soldier in U.S. Army. Her mother Lamanda, died in 1911 and is buried at the IOOF Cemetery in Marionville, MO. | Death Certificate Online Obit Pioneer Life Phyllis Long Photo Jay Trace |
