DUNAWAY, Calvin | Aug. 12, 1820 Coffee Co., TN |
Apr. 13, 1865 Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: John Calvin Dunaway, who died in 1865, was buried elsewhere, but was moved to Beaver Cemetery when his wife Mary (Beaver) died and was buried there in 1897. Their daughter Nancy Tennessee married Billie and Polly Beaver's grandson, Christopher Columbus Beaver. They are buried at this cemetery. - Eureka Springs Times-Echo - Wils Dunaway of Howard County, KS was in Beaver last Thursday and while there, had the remains of his father who was killed in a bushwhacking fight on Apr. 15 1865, exhumed and shipped to Barry Co., MO, there to be laid beneath the same tomb with his mother. Cal Dunaway, it seems he was a rebel bushwhacker. On the date above mentioned, he was in the vicinity of the point now called Gaskins looking for some stock which had strayed off, and was waylaid by Sam Gaskins and Meek Moore, who espoused the Union cause. A battle ensued with the result that Dunaway was killed, eleven bullets having penetrated his body. The skull which was exhumed Thursday shows plainly where the ball penetrated and pushed out at the other side, making a hole through which a marble could easily have been dropped. The skeleton was in a perfect state of preservation, and the quilt which was wrapped around the body at the time of its burial is said to have been wonderfully preserved. - Another Photo | Note Donna Cooper Photo Jay Trace Photo Ginger Hall Scroggins |
