MCCALLISTER, Samuel A. Sept. 24, 1840

Franklin Co.,MO
Dec. 23, 1906
Barry Co., MO
Research Note: Mother - Mary Gross - Wives - 1st Sarah J. Love, 2nd Samantha Jane Arnhart, 3rd Emma J. Harris. Children - Edwin A., Virginia D. and Minnie M. - Goodspeed's 1888 Franklin County History - Samuel A. McCallister, farmer and stock raiser, is a native of Franklin County, MO., and was born in 1840, at Washington. He is the younger child and only son of Samuel and Mary (Gross) McCallister, who had only two children, this son and a daughter, Sarah A., wife of G. W. Arnhart. Samuel A. McCallister was reared on the farm by his step-father, his own father having died when he was very young; his early education was obtained at the common schools, but he acquired the greater part of his knowledge by study at odd times. He worked on a farm and at various pursuits until 1859, when he went to Texas and joined the Rangers as a guard against the Indians. He returned to Missouri in 1865, and the following year married Sarah J. Love. Mrs. McCallister died in 1876, the mother of six children, only three of whom are living: Edwin A., Virginia D. and Minnie M. In 1879 Mr. McCallister married Samantha J. Arnhart, who lived but a few months after her marriage. In 1883 our subject was united in marriage with Emma J. Harris, who is still living, and is the mother of one daughter, Ethel. From a poor boy Mr. McCallister has come to be one of the most prominent farmers in the county. He owns 340 acres of land and a fine residence, all the result of his industry. He affiliates with the Republican party in politics, though he is conservative. He and his wife are consistent members of the Christian Church. Family Genealogy by

She left her home in Purdy a young woman and over her lifetime lived in many places including Japan. Widowed at the age of 50, mom had to reinvent herself, letting go of her dreams of Dad and travel. She lived close to her children and grandchildren as we grew our families but later found herself back home in Monett, the closing of a circle. Mom left Missouri when she was no longer able to live alone and moved to McKinney, Texas to be near her son. The family is gathering at Arnhart Cemetery in Purdy on Saturday June 15, 2013. MO
Research Note: Born in Jacket, Missouri to sharecroppers Oscar L. Dotson and Mable Dotson, Nina was one of 10 children. While history has marked the courage of men during the depression and WWII the courage of women and children is sometimes overlooked. WIth too many mouths to feed at home Nina left at a young age to make her mark on the world. While she left at an early age she always remained close to her parents and her siblings and throughout her life, they were always her closest friends. On her own, she made her way to San Francisco during WWII to help in the war efforts. She lied about her age and got a job selling cigarettes on the Treasure Island Naval Base where she met her husband Bertram H. Melton. While their marriage didn't last the length of their lives it did result in her two much beloved sons. After her divorce she started her long and successful career as a real estate agent. Nina is predeceased by her parents, Oscar and Mabel Dotson and her siblings Hazel Levi, Jim Dotson, Ralph Dotson, Wilma Price, and Robert Dotson. - Photo of stone at findagrave.com.
