Research Note: He was the son of Guy and Beatrice Harper. They were married 63 years, brought together in love in Purdy, Missouri, at Arnhart Church. While Don served his country in the United States Navy and later earned an electrical engineering degree from the University of Kansas, Phyllis worked locally, helping to support the couple. From there the couple relocated with Don's career, including to Norman, Oklahoma, where Don served as Associate Director of Program Development at the OU Research Institute, and Irving, Texas, where Don worked as Vice President of Planning and Development at the University of Dallas. Their path led to the west coast where Phyllis and Don bought a commercial business and later developed commercial real estate and operated retail businesses in Southern California. When the couple eventually moved their family back to Texas, Don continued to commute between Los Angeles and Irving. He is preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Beatrice Harper. The memorial service will be held at Brown's Memorial in Irving, Texas. Research Note: She was the daughter of Herschel and Marie Mackey. As partners in life, Phyllis and Don were also partners in business. Their local ventures included launching enclosed flea markets around the Dallas area, the development of the University Hills Shopping Center, and opening and operating several beauty salons with the now popular suite concept, which was new to the industry at the time. Phyllis's eye for design and Don's engineering expertise were paramount in the development of their businesses, as well as the construction of the family's home in the Fox Glen community of Las Colinas. As prominent philanthropists of the Irving community, they supported various charities, including the Irving Hospital Guild, the Lyric Stage League, and the Irving Symphony League. Phyllis and Don were active in numerous organizations and enjoyed their memberships in the Las Colinas Country Club, the Junior Book Review, and the Dallas Bridge Club. Phyllis also loved her involvement in the Las Colinas Women's Association and valued her circle of friends from their Fox Glen neighborhood, nicknamed the Foxy Ladies. Phyllis's and Don's joyous personalities and open hearts added to their ease in establishing lifelong friendships in the area. She is preceded in death by her two younger siblings, brothers James Mackey and Kenneth Mackey and parents Herschel and Marie Mackey. Both Don and Phyllis are survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews. The memorial service will be held at Brown's Memorial in Irving, Texas. Linda was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pierce City where she was involved with the Ladies Auxiliary. Linda enjoyed working with her hands making quilts, sewing, and crafting. She and Melvin enjoyed many fishing trips to Roaring River. She also loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, and she never missed a family reunion. Bill Hemphill was the sheriff of Barry County in the 1950's era and was a descendant of Giles and Sarah (Singleton) Smith through the Burg family. - He was a retired law enforcement officer, serving as Barry County sheriff from 1952 to 1968. He organized the Barry County Sheriff Mounted Patrol and was elected president of the Missouri Sheriff Association in 1957 and 1958. He served as president of the National Sheriff Association from 1967 to 1968. He served as juvenile officer for Barry, Lawrence and Stone counties from 1968 to 1980. He was appointed U. S. Deputy Marshal in 1970. He was elected mayor of Purdy in 1974 and served two terms during which time he was instrumental in establishing the Purdy Community Center. He was a 40-year member of the Purdy Lions Club and past member of the Cassville Rotary Club. He was active in the Republican Party and in 1988 served as an elector who cast one of Missouri's electoral votes for President George Bush. He was a lifelong Barry County cattleman and farmer and owned and operated Purdy Farm Center until 1952. He was active with the Barry County Youth Camp and Four State Travel Camper Club, and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Purdy. He married Freddie Akin on July 30, 1936, in Monett, and she survives. After this loss, Freddie found love again when she met William (Bill) Hemphill. On July 30, 1936, Freddie and Bill were united in marriage in Monett, MO. To this union two boys were born. Freddie lived a long and full life, a blessing to many and loved by all. She gave her life to Christ and was baptized in her youth, and was a long-time member of the Purdy and Monett churches of Christ. She loved gardening, sewing, quilting, painting, entertaining her many visitors and friends, fishing with her husband at Roaring River and traveling all around the world. She and Bill were co-founders and long-time volunteers with Barry County Youth Camp, and provided scholarships to many through the foundation. "Her children rise up and call her blessed." Henderson, 89, a prominent resident of the Purdy area, died at 9:50 a.m. yesterday in the Cassville Hospital following a short illness. Mr. Henderson was born near Purdy, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Henderson, and had lived there all his life. He was retired farmer and stockman and for a number of years was a music teacher. He had composed and written a number of songs for the Stamps and Baxter Music Company. A member of the Gunter Methodist Church, Mr. Henderson was preceded in death by his wife and one daughter. Survivors include four sons, Erval Henderson and Clyde Henderson both of Purdy, Otis Henderson of Exeter and Evan Henderson of Fairview; two daughters, Mrs. Archie Gardiner of Hollywood, Calif., and Mrs. Leo Brown of Valley Center, Kans.; one brother, Rev. Calvin Henderson of Cassville; one sister, Mrs. Chris Edwards of Van Nuys, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Research Note: Lois was the daughter of Henry and Ada (Lamp) Coffey. On Apr. 7, 1962 in Cassville, Missouri, she married Kenneth Lechner, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter and her husband. Preceding her in death were her parents. Lois attended school in Cassville, graduating from Cassville High School in 1958. She was employed at the Barry County Courthouse in the recorder of deeds office and retired as the deputy circuit clerk. She then became a door greeter at Walmart where she worked another twenty-five years before retiring again. Most of Lois' life was spent in the Cassville area until two and a half years ago when she and Kenneth moved to Springfield to be near their daughter and son-in-law. Some of her favorite pastimes were working crossword puzzles, playing Woodoku on her iPad, cooking and collecting cookbooks. Lois loved going on cruises and picnics with her family. Walters. - This William Linn has left more tracks as he has a Civil War service and pension file (Civil War Pension #505951). His service file notes his birthday as 12 July 1827 in Bath County, Kentucky. In his application for a pension, William wrote that he married Margaret E. Walters near Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois on 10 June 1847. William enlisted on 1 November 1863 at Cassville, Missouri for 20 months in Company L, 15th Missouri Calvary. His enrollment card noted that he was 37 years old, had blue eyes, dark hair and was 6 feet and 1/2 inches tall.
