Close Hi Pat My name is Margaret Greer and I live near Liverpool in England. My great grandmother's brother Joseph Close emigrated to US in 1870 and settled in Dale, Atchison after his marriage in 1876. He returned to England after the death of his wife Hannah Winter Close in 1910 and is buried in Westmorland, England He raised his family of 6 children in Dale and it appears that some of his children and grandchildren remained in Atchison and surrounding counties until they died. I have letters describing their day to day lives between 1910 and 1914 in Dale and Skidmore, Nodaway Co. I'm very keen to find Joseph's descendants in US. Someone on the Rootsweb MOATCHISON mailing list sent me the following extracts from the 'Gone but not forgotten' book and I'm wondering if any of your volunteers has access to obituary notices for the later deaths * which could lead me to their living families In Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Clark Township (Section 26, Township 64,
Range I've also found deaths of the following who were Joseph and Hannah's daughter in law and grandchildren: Hattie Mae Lawrence Close died April 2 1960 at Fairfax and is buried at the Tharp Memorial cemetery, Holt Co Sarah Evelyn Close ( New) died Jan 23 1994 at Fairfax and buried at Tharp Lawrence Richard Close ( "Beany") died July 24 1992 at Maryville, Nodaway Co and buried at Quitman cemetery, Atchison Co. He married Edna Graves in 1936. I'm happy to pay any costs involved and would appreciate any help you can give me. Many regards Margaret : margaret.greer1@btopenworld.com |

Dailey - I am searching for information on my G G Grandfather and G G Grandmother. John Daily, born 7 December 1822, probably in Clark County, Indiana. Died 7 July 1867, buried in Linden Cemetery, Rockport, Atchison County, Missouri. He married Mary Maria Overman, 12 February 1846, she was born 8 February 1830, Charleston, Clark County, Indiana, daughter of Joseph Overman SR. and Jane Covert. She died 22 March 1874, Rockport, Atchison County, Missouri. John Daily enrolled in the 58th Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia, and his son Charles is listed with the 43rd Regiment, Company I during the Civil War. John Daily's parents are in question and a Will or Recorded Deed may provide a clue. Mary Maria may have married a "Bayne" after John's death and this is yet to be verified. I have the marriages for their children which include Tibbets, Oslin, Vest, Collins, Moore, and Kennedy families of the Rockport area, 1866 through 1898 The family file currently exceeds 1500 individuals back to 1860. I will share what I have. DailyWL@aol.com |

Derry - Hello Pat! I found a reference in the Atchison County MO Queries 1998 that I believe is my family... It is the one online re: DERRY/HOPPING, it says: Will correspond with anyone working on the following lines-DERRY/HOPPING. These families came out of Fulton Co.,Illinois and they were in Atchison Co around West Boro and Tarkio. Will gladly share materials. Signed PAT KNOWLES. My problem is.... I e-mailed and it came back to me, old e-mail I guess, from 1998. Could you please help me? (Would this person please update e-mail address? Pat) Jacob Washington DERRY born 15 Nov 1860 was my great grandfather, he married a Bell ADDINGTON born 1867, they married on 13 September 1883 and had a family in Atchison County ,coming to WA state by 1898 (I have most of their children's names on this end, some born in MO, some born in WA state, one of them was my grandmother Manilla born August 26, 1898. I have a copy of the mortgage of 1898, Jacob and Bell, wife, and Lucinda DERRY. On this end the family spells the name DERRY as DERREY, but it is spelled these ways and others as well. I sure hope that you can tell me about the DERRY'S that lived in Atchison County. I am so looking forward to your answer, would love to find out my roots and am so grateful for your time. Lownes - My name is Jim Dewey and I live in California. My Great Great Grand Parents are Caleb Pancoast Lownes and Sophronia Applegate. They were married in Atchison County, Missouri on 6 Nov. 1845. The records there that I have been able to find list their names as Caleb P. Lownes and Sophrona Applegate. Census records that I have been able to find List Sophronia's Parents as having been born in Kentucky and Sophronia having been born in Indiana in 1828. I have been searching for her parents for years and have come up blank. My question is this: do you have access to the actual marriage certificate and does it have any information about Sophronia's parents? mimisapo@sbcglobal.net |
Manley Hi Pat, I desperately need help in locating my grtgrandparents who lived in Atchison County. Charles Roswell Manley: born-July 1845 in Nodaway Co., died-July 1900 from drowning in a well; married Nancy Ann York-Aug. 4, 1864 in Nodaway Co., she died April 16, 1891 in Fairfax. They lived in various townships in Atchison such as Benton, Fairfax, and Tarkio. What I am trying to find is their death records and where they are buried. I have tried several sources but no luck as of yet. I have even been to Fairfax and Rockport and Tarkio searching various cemeteries and have found no records. I hope you or someone else can help me. It would be nice to know where they are "at rest". I also would like to know where two of their children are buried. John William Manley born about 1867, died March 13, 1893 in Nishnabotna (Western Union Telegram), and married Cora Mae Batson March 13, 1893 at Rockport, she died in Fresno, Calif. Mandy Bell Manley born Jan. 1870 in Benton Township, died before 1890; she married Joshua H. Baker Sept. 4, 1886 and had a son named Henry. I have hit a brick wall with this family and hope you can help. I recently wrote to Letha Mowry in Nodaway and she searched that area for me to see if any of them were buried with other Manleys in Elmo and Lamar Cemetery. She suggested I contact Julia Bennington in Atchison for assistance. I did not see her name on the Atchison web page so I am writing to you. I hope that someone can help me in locating my grtgrandparents and uncle and aunt. Thank you for your time and help and God Bless You. Gloria J. Martinson : globejm@megavision.com Columbus, NE I am leaving on vacation Sunday June 20 through June 30. I will be in Missouri on the eastern side visiting my grandchildren in Bowling Green. Schroeder - John Henry Schroeder 1858-1903 from Germany to Atchison Co. married to Anna Maria Blankemeier 1870-1945. Whitehead - Dear Pat, I am researching my paternal grandfather, John Underwood Whitehead(b. 1851 Raytown, TN,; m. Alpha Melvina Dykes 1903 Jeraldstown, Greene Co.,TN) who came to Taylor Co. from Greene Co., TN, sometime after 1904 when their first child was born, had six more children there, then moved to Atchison co., MO, after 1920, when their last child was born. John died Mar 1926 and was buried in Clarinda, IA. From your newspaper page, I found his obit., and names that might be his three sisters, Lula, Effie, and Bertha Whitehead, as well as numerous other Whiteheads who may be mine. I would like to ask for any other information that anyone might have on Taylor Co. Whiteheads-this is the first real break I have had on the Whitehead side, as his info ends on his death cert., with no parents names. Please e-mail me at: morda02@yahoo.com if anyone has any info. Thank you for any help. Sandy |
