Obituary of Mary Virginia Settles Howard

Mary Virginia Settles Howard, was born September 22, 1845 at Greene County Tennessee, and passed away at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Mo., on August 28th, being at the time of her death, 88 years, 11 months and 6 days old.

She was married to James Walker Howard on June 11, 1871, and to this union eight children were born, seven of whom survive. A daughter, Mrs. Littleton Rufus Rhoades (Mary Jane"Dovie"Howard) passed away about twenty years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Howard were among the early pioneers of Northwest Missouri, traveling in a covered wagon, and settling first near Rock Port, and in 1900 moving to a farm near Skidmore.

Mr. Howard passed away in 1918, and Mrs. Howard has made her home, in recent years, with her son, Walter Guy Howard, near Skidmore. Mrs. Howard, when a young woman, confessed her faith in Christ as her Savior and united with the Southern Methodist Church at Skidmore, later removing her membership to Fairfax.

Those who remain to grieve the loss of their loved one include three sons, John, Colorado Springs, Colo.; James, Twin Falls, Idaho; Walter, Skidmore, Mo.; four daughters, Mrs. Nancy Minnery, Twin Falls, Idaho; Mrs. Earl Busby, Twin Falls, Idaho; Mrs. "Tempy" Madron, Seneca, Nebraska; Mrs. Essie Catron, Fairfax, Mo.; and a sister, Mrs. W.R. Reynolds, Hoxie, Kansas.

Funeral services were held at Christian Church at Skidmore at 11:am, August 31st, conducted by the minister, M.N. Breckenridge. Services were also held at the English Grove Presbyterian Church, west of Fairfax at 1:pm by Mr. Breckenridge, assisted by Rev. C.R. Swofford, minister of the Methodist Church, south of Fairfax, and Rev. A.C. Klamm of the English Grove Presbyterian Church.

Interment was in the English Grove cemetery.
