Dragoo, Hallie - Hallie Dragoo, 92, of Shenandoah [Iowa], passed away, Friday, April 19, 1991, at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, where she had been a resident since June of 1990.

Funeral services were held today, Monday, April 22, 1991, at 2 p.m. from Hackett Funeral Home in Shenandoah.

Interment took place at Home Cemetery in Tarkio, Mo.

Hallie Mae (Wennihan) Dragoo, daughter of John T. and Tressie (Vangundy) Wennihan, was born March 5, 1899 at Fairfax, Mo. She grew up in the rural Fairfax community and received her education in country schools.

On Nov 9, 1918, Hallie was united in marriage with Orville M. Dragoo at St Joseph, Mo. Following their marriage, they farmed in the Tarkio vicinity. Later, they moved to Blanchard [Iowa] and in 1944 they moved to Shenandoah.

Hallie was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Shenandoah. Shenandoah Evening Sentinel

 

Dunlap, Helen Pelster - Mrs Darrel Dunlap passed away at the hospital Wednesday morning following an operation, having been sick for some time. This young mother passed away in the prime of life and leaves to mourn her going her husband and three small children, besides many relatives and friends.

Helen Pelster was born in Atchison county, Mo., June 6, 1910, and died October 5, 1938, aged 28 years, 3 months and 29 days. Funeral services will be held at St John's Lutheran church, near Westboro, on Friday afternoon at 2:30.

Daugherty, James - Funeral services for James C. Daugherty, Rock Port, Missouri, were held Monday, May 21, 1990, at 2 p.m. at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port. Services were conducted by Rev George Owens and interment was in Hunter Cemetery south of Rock Port. James, 74 years of age, died Friday, May 18, 1990, at Community Hospital in Fairfax, Missouri.

James Daugherty, son of James Henry and Naomi (Hunley) Daugherty, was born March 10, 1916, in Rogersville, Tennessee. James came to Northwest Missouri at an early age with his family and attended the Cottonwood Grove County School near Phelps City, Missouri, and a Hamburg, Iowa rural school. Prior to his marriage he farmed with his parents in the Watson, Missouri, community.

On June 27, 1938, James was united in marriage to Marie Ellen Patton in Maryville, Missouri. All their married life they lived and worked in the Rock Port area, moving from the country into Rock Port in 1972. In 1983 they became residents of the Fair Oaks Senior Citizen Housing. For 35 years he attended and was a member of the local Alcoholics Anonymous organization.

James is survived by his wife, Marie, of the home; three sons, Larry Daugherty of Rock Port, Kenneth Daugherty and wife, Debra, of LeMars, Iowa, and Marvin Daugherty and wife, Reta, of Wathena, Kansas; one sister, Louise Bailey of Hastings, Iowa; seven grandsons; three great-granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, James was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Dale, and one sister, Geneva Barrett.

 

Diggs, Fitzhugh Lee - was born March 27, 1898 at Gerard, Crawford Co, Kansas, the son of Walter M. and Betty (Kincheloe) Diggs. In 1900 he moved, in covered wagons, with his family to Stillwater, Ok. For three years they resided in Stillwater before returning to the Arrow Rock, Mo area, (the home of his parents). Fitzhugh attended the Oak Wood Country School through the 8th grade and the Arrow Rock High School for 2 years. In 1916, he entered the Central College Academy at Fayette, Mo. Following his graduation in 1918 he enrolled at Central College and while there became part of the Students Army Training Corp. In 1922, he received his A.B. degree in History and Economics. During his 4 years at Central, he lettered in 4 sports, football, basketball, track and baseball and was captain of the football team his senior year. He later coached track and taught history at the Missouri military Academy in Mexico, Mo.

In earlier years, he met Hazel Brown who was attending Howard Payne College, and what is now part of Central. They were married Dec 30, 1923 north of Rock Port, Mo in the home where Hazel was born. There they lived and farmed all their married life. Their son, Darrell, was born November 26, 1928 at the Shenandoah [Iowa] Hospital.

In 1964, they started banding birds as a hobby and had tagged over 50,000 birds.

Hazel died April 4, 1989. Fitzhugh continued living on the farm until moving to Rock Port in 1991. On March 27, 1998 he celebrated his 100th birthday. He was a life time member of the Methodist Church and was presently a member of the Rock Port United Methodist church. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving his country in World War I.

Besides his parents and wife, Hazel, he was preceded in death by his son, Darrell, Sept 4, 1989; infant sister, Mable; brothers, Arthur E. Diggs and Jesse L. Diggs.

Survivors include: brother, W. Morris Diggs of Fayette and sister, Mary D. Riley of Marshall, Mo.

Funeral services were held Apr 29 at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port. The Rev Allan Bash officiated. Interment was in Grange Hall Cemetery. Hamburg Reporter, May 7, 1998

Carlson, Earl Eric - Earl Carlson, 81, of Westboro, Mo, died Saturday, April 1, 2000, at the Fairfax Community Hospital, Fairfax, Mo, after a brief illness. Earl was born May 14, 1918, in Raymond, Neb., to Frederick and Annie Fairchild Carlson. He served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. December 26, 1958, he was united in marriage to Louise M. Stotts who survives. He was a farmer in the Westboro area.

Survivors include his wife Louise of the home, daughters, Linda Jean Carlson of Westboro, Mo, and Brenda Merriett and husband David of Westboro, Mo, 2 granddaughters, Erica Dawn Merriett and Sarah Ruth Merriett, 2 sons from a previous marriage, Earl Eric Carlson, Jr of California, Mo, and James Lee Carlson of Urbandale, Iowa, grandchildren, Shelly Stephson, Jeff Carlson, Erin Carlson, Kendall Carlson, 4 great grandchildren, brother, Warren Carlson of Sterling, Colo, sisters, Sigurd Brush of Longview, Wash, and Ruth Benz of Colorado Springs, Colo. Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers, Jack, Herman, Sture, 2 sisters, Olga Newman and Nora Ogorzolka.

Memorial services were held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, April 4, 2000 at the First Baptist church, Tarkio, Mo with Pastor Glenn Scott officiating. Burial was in the Center Grove Cemetery near Westboro, Mo. Cavner, Lela Marie McGinnis - daughter of D.S. and Natie Morrow McGinnis died November 20, 1992. She was born at Braddyville [Iowa] October 3, 1910 but lived most of her young life at Blanchard.

She was married November 14, 1928 to Cyle Cavner of Westboro, Mo who preceded her in death in 1972.

She is survived by three sisters: Cleva Davison of Gardena, Ca; Veda Brown of Hopkins, Mo; Winifred Peterson of Maryville, Mo; one brother, Cecil McGinnis of Maryville, Mo and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two brothers.

Funeral services were held this Monday, November 23 at 10:30 am at Price Funeral Home in Maryville, Mo. [Nov 23, 1992]

Collins, Mary - Mary Collins, age 77, of Hamburg, Ia passed away Friday, February 23, 2001 at the Sidney Health Center, Sidney, Ia.

She was born on April 5, 1923 at Mesita, Colorado; the daughter of Henry and Effie (Muffley) Hudson.

She attended school and graduated from the Watson High School in Watson, Mo in 1929. She was united in marriage to Wayne Langston in Hamburg, Ia and to this union a son James was born. She later married Bill Collins. Mary and her husband Wayne owned and operated the Blue Moon Bar in Hamburg for many years. She had also worked at the American Meter Company in Nebraska City. She was a housewife and she also worked on the farm.

She is survived by a son, James Langston and wife, Teresa of Stuart, Ia; one sister Beulah Welch of Rock Port, Mo; three brothers: Donald Hudson of Brazil, Indiana; Albert Hudson and Delbert Hudson both of Rock Port, Mo; other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by both of her husbands and a brother James Hudson. Graveside Services were held Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at 1:00 pm at the High Creek Cemetery near Watson, Mo with Rev Don Seeger of the United Trinity Church in Hamburg officiating. Burial followed the services.

Memorials may be given to the Hamburg Rescue.

Collins, Bill B. [Billie Bert] son of John C. and Mary Margaret Ozenbaugh Collins, was born near Watson Aug 24, 1926. He died Oct 24, 1993, at his home, at the age of 67 years, 11 months and 28 days.

Bill served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954.

On Sept 28 he was united in marriage to Mary Langston.

He was a retired truck driver, and was a member of the American Legion, the V.F.W. and the Eagles Club of Hamburg.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Terry Collins.

He is survived by his wife Mary of Hamburg; stepson James [Langston] of Stuart; a step-grandson; four brothers, Ben Collins of Hamburg, Everett of Council Bluffs, Jack Collins of Nebraska City and John Collins of Colorado; other relatives and friends.

Services were held Oct 27 at the Rash Funeral Home with the Rev Carroll Fischer officiating. Interment was in High Creek Cemetery with the American Legion in charge of the committal services. [Nov 4, 1993]

 

Cole, Mrs John L. - 46 years, 6 months and 25 days of age, died on the C.O. Roberson farm near Rock Port, Sept 1. Funeral services were held at Grange Hall, conducted by the Rev D.W. Griffith, and burial was made at the cemetery at that place.

 

Collins, Hattie Catherine, was born Aug 4, 1912, near Watson, Mo, the daughter of George V. and Ethel (Suggs) Wolf. She received her early education in the Linden and High Creek community schools.

On March 31, 1928 she was united in marriage to Wade Baxter Collins. After their marriage they owned and operated trucks in the Watson and High Creek community until they began farming in 1945. Wade and Hattie retired from farming in 1971. They continued living in Watson until the flood of 1993 when they moved to Pleasant View in Rock Port.

Hattie was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Watson and had taught Sunday School for many years.

Survivors include her husband Wade of Pleasant View; two sons, Stan Collins, Fremont, Ne; Harold Collins, Missouri Valley, Ia; daughter Ruby Meyrand, Warrensburg, Mo; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death besides her parents was one brother Ben Breazile.

Funeral services were held Mar 1 at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port. The Rev Carroll Fischer officiated. Interment was in Linden Cemetery. [Mar 11, 1999]

 

Collins, Minnie E., 95, Fairfax, died Tuesday, November 15, 1994, at the Fairfax Hospital.

Born in Morristown, Tenn, Miss Collins lived in the Hamburg, Iowa, area for a few years before moving to the Daleview neighborhood, east of Fairfax, where she lived for 60 years. She moved to Fairfax 14 years ago.

She was a farmer and a homemaker. She was a member of the Fairfax Baptist Church.

Miss Collins was preceded in death by six brothers, John, Joe, Jim, Henry, Bill and Stanford; and two sisters, Martha Collins and Mollie Harbin.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Friday, November 18, at the Fairfax Baptist Church. Burial was at High Creek Cemetery, Watson, Mo. [Nov 24, 1994]

 

Collins, Myrtle Emily, daughter of William J. and Dollie Maness, was born in Hamburg March 8, 1914. She died at Sidney June 2, 1995, at the age of 81 years, 2 months, 24 days.

She was a member of the Baptist Church of Watson, Mo.

On Oct 31, 1929, she was united in marriage to Paul Collins. To this union three children were born.

Myrtle and Paul lived around Watson and farmed. Mildred worked at the Watson school. They moved to Hamburg [Iowa] in 1981 and made their home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul, May 17, 1983; daughter Leola Jennings, Dec 18, 1987; sisters, Alice Allen, Cora Dunn, Margret Tamms; and brother Henry Maness.

She is survived by her daughter, Madeline Gardner of Hamburg; son, Harvey Collins of Council Bluffs; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; sisters, Allie Britton, Eva Hulet, Leola Holmes; and brother William J. Maness; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held June 5 at the Watson Baptist Church with the Rev. Albert Shirley officiating. Interment was in High Creek Cemetery. Rash Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. [Jun 8, 1995]

 

Collins, Paul Harvey, son of William Anthony and Nancy Jane (Harbin) Collins, was born at Morristown, Tenn, July 8, 1907. He died May 17, 1983 at the Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg [Iowa] at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 9 days.

He attended school in Tennessee and was a member of the Baptist church in Massadonia, Tenn. Paul came to Missouri in 1921 to make his home. On October 30, 1929 he was united in marriage to Myrtle Emily Maness and to this union three children were born.

Paul farmed most of his life in the Watson area, retiring in 1971. For the past 2 1/2 years Paul and Mrs Collins have made their home in Hamburg. He was a member of the Watson Missionary Baptist Church.

Mr Collins was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers; Luther, Robert, John and Hubert; 1 infant sister and another sister, Nora Goodwin.

He is survived by his wife Myrtle of Hamburg, 1 son, Harvey Collins of Council Bluffs; 2 daughters, Mrs Harold (Madeline) Gardner of Riverton, and Mrs Gary (Leola) Jennings of Hamburg; 6 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 2 brothers, Wade of Watson, and Howard of Hamburg; 2 sisters, Mrs Anna Mae Gregg and Mrs Charles (Louise) Bolton of Hamburg, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held May 20, at the Watson Missionary Baptist church with Rev Al Shirley and Rev Carroll Fisher officiating. Interment in High Creek Cemetery at Watson. Rash Funeral Home was in charge of services. [May 26, 1983]

 

Collins, Stanford, who lives on one of the Bert Carpenter farms nine miles southeast of Hamburg [Iowa], was instantly killed on Tuesday morning when struck by a bolt of lightning. His sister, Molly, who was near him, received a severe shock, from which she has not as yet fully recovered.

A violent thunderstorm came up and he started to the house when he noticed his sister trying to get the chickens to shelter. He stopped to assist, and was standing near a large tree when the bolt hit him on the top of the head. It broke into parts, one going thru his body and down the right leg, and the other entering the tree at about his shoulders. The tree was badly shattered, and a piece of the hat he was wearing was driven into the tree and the rest of the hat torn to pieces. His clothing was badly burned, and his underdrawers were burned to a crisp. A watch he was wearing at the time stopped at 10:16 am. The works were torn to pieces and rattled in the case. His sister, Mollie, had her hand on the chicken wire fence and received a severe shock.

Stanford Collins was born in Morristown, Tennessee, June 9, 1880 and died, Tuesday, June 17, 1924, aged 44 years and 8 days. He was never married, and leaves the following brothers and sisters, Joe and John of Tarkio, Mo, Jim, Will, Molly and Minnie, of this community. Funeral services will be held at the High Creek church this afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, conducted by the Rev W.D. Griffith, and interment will be made in the cemetery at that place. Stanford was a hard working man, respected by all, and his loss will be mourned by all. [Jun 19, 1924]

 

Collins, Wade Baxter, was born May 25, 1909 in Morristown, Tenn, the son of William Anthony and Nanie Jane (Harbin) Collins. He attended local schools in Morristown. In 1920 he moved with his family to Hamburg [Iowa], to farm.

On March 31, 1928, he was united in marriage to Hattie Catherine Wolf. They owned and operated trucks in the Watson and High Creek community until they began farming in 1945. Wade and Hattie retired in 1971. They continued living in Watson until the flood of 1993 when they moved to Pleasant View in Rock Port. Hattie died Feb 25, 1999.

Wade died Feb 10, at Pleasant View at the age of 90 years.

Survivors include two sons, Stan Collins, Fremont, Ne and Harold Collins, Missouri Valley, Ia; daughter, Ruby Meyrand, Warrensburg, Mo; one sister, Louise Bolton, Hamburg; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents and wife, Hattie, nine brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Feb 14 at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port, conducted by the Rev Carroll Fischer. Interment was in Linden Cemetery. [Feb 17, 2000]

 

Cook, Mable Wade, daughter of Mr and Mrs James Wade, was born Feb 20, 1907, at Competition, Mo, and departed this life on Nov 23, 1939, at her home near Farragut [Iowa] at the age of 32 years, 9 months and three days.

On May 16, 1925, she was united in marriage to Freeman Cook. To this union five children were born, one preceding her in death in 1931.

She is survived by her husband and four children, Kenneth 14, Lois 9, Gerald Dean 3, and Shirley, who is one year old. She is also survived by her mother, Mrs Anna Wade, and four sisters and brothers, namely Mrs L. Dougan of Competition, Mo, Mrs Herschel Jamison of Hopkins, Mo, Mrs Lester Jones of Rock Port, Raymond of Falcon, Mo and Herbert, Clifford, Herman and Dorothy, all of Rock Port. Two sisters and one brother preceded her in death. She is also survived by a host of relatives and friends.

At Competition, Mo, in 1922, she made a confession of her faith in Christ and has lived a christian life ever since then.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov 25, at the Johnson Funeral Home in Hamburg, conducted by Rev J. Gilbert Hutchinson. Interment was made in the High Creek cemetery. [June 4, 1942]

 

Cooper, Eula Lytle, 77, Tarkio [Missouri], died Dec 18 at Fairfax Hospital.

Born May 11, 1904 at Hamburg, Ia, the daughter of George and Dora (Nixon) Lytle, she lived near Hamburg until 1930 when she moved to Tarkio.

She married Frank Cooper May 24, 1922 at Rock Port. She was active in business with her husband in the Farm and City Supply from 1948 to 1958.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Cooper, of the home; a daughter, Catherine Musch, Tarkio; a sister, Maude Brought, Tarkio; five brothers: Ray and Earl Lytle, both of Hamburg, Ia; Jay and Merle Lytle, both of Rock Port, and Eavil Lytle, Patterson, Cal; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were Dec 21 at the Tarkio First Baptist Church. Burial was at the Tarkio Home Cemetery, with services under the direction of Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio. [1981]

 

Cooper, Frank, 79, Tarkio [Missouri], died Jan 1 at his daughter's home in Tarkio.

A native of Morristown, Tenn, he had lived in the Tarkio area since 1904. He was a farmer and also operated the Farm and Home Supply Co in Tarkio until his retirement in 1958. He had served several years on the Tarkio City Council.

He married Eula Lytle May 24, 1922 at Rock Port. Mrs Cooper died two weeks ago.

Surviving are his daughter, Catherine Musch, Tarkio; three sisters: Lyda Bolin, Tarkio; Ester Huber, Santa Rosa, Cal, and Jettit Rouse, Romeo, Colo; a brother, John Cooper, Reno, Neb; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Services were Jan 4 at 11 am at Davis Funeral Home. Burial was at Tarkio Home Cemetery.

 

Cooper, Thomas H., 75, of Rock Port [Missouri] died in the local hospital on Wednesday of last week, due to infection which required the removal of his leg between the knee and foot. He had been in poor health for a long time. He had been a life long resident of Atchison county, moving from near Langdon to Rock Port in 1928. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Rock Port Friday afternoon, and interment was in the Hunter cemetery. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs Gordon Clifton of this place and Mrs George Christian of Rock Port. [May 26, 1949]

 

Cavner, William Cyle, was born at Sharpsburg, Ia, July 7, 1906, the son of Wm H. and Bertha (Hurst) Cavner and passed away at Hemet, Calif, Feb 10, 1972 at 65 years of age.

He came to Atchison County [Missouri] at the age of 14 and was married to Marie McGinnis at Westboro, Nov 14, 1928. In 1941 they moved to Tarkio where he operated a restaurant and later was a car salesman and worked in a plumbing business. In 1953 he moved to Gardena, Calif, where he worked in a super market till his health failed. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gardena.

Surviving are his wife, Marie of the home, and four sisters, Mrs Mabel Robey of Bedford, Ia, Mrs Pearl Hughes of Lenox, Ia, Miss Leona Cavner and Mrs Mary Jeffers, both of Clarinda, Ia. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters and 2 brothers. [Burial in Home Cemetery, Tarkio, Missouri.]

 

Carlson, Mary - Funeral services will be held at 10 am Thursday, November 2, 1989, at the St Luke Episcopal Church in Des Moines, Iowa, for Mary Jane (Peck) Carlson. Graveside services will be held at 3 pm at Tarkio Home Cemetery in Tarkio on Thursday as well. Reverend Cleo Colville will officiate.

Mary Jane Carlson, 58, passed away Monday, October 30, 1989, at her home in Des Moines as a result of cancer. She was born August 15, 1931, in Maryville, Missouri, to Mary (Burg) and Doane Byron Peck.

Mary attended Tarkio schools and Northwest Missouri State University. She did graduate work at the University of Nebraska and at Drake University in Des Moines. She taught school in Des Moines for 28 years until the time of her death.

Mary was united in marriage to John W. Carlson January 21, 1953, in Maryville. She was a member of the St Luke Episcopal Church of Des Moines. She was also a member of the Kappa Delta Phi Scholastic Society and Tri Sigma Sorority.

Survivors include her husband, John W. Carlson, of the home; one son, Arne Carlson, Los Angeles, California; and her mother, Mary Peck, Tarkio. She was preceded in death by her father, Doane Peck. Memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospice, 6th and University, Des Moines; or the St Luke Episcopal Church of Des Moines.

 

Carpenter, Camille Airy, 93, died at La Bonne Maison Retirement Home in Sikeston, Mo Dec 7, 1994. She was born March 24, 1901 in Watson, Mo to David William and Mary Stafford Airy.

She graduated from Hamburg High School and attended the University of Nebraska for three years, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She received her teaching certificate and taught English at North Platte, Nebr for several years. She lived most of her life in Hamburg, where she was a member of Chapter D.I. of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and was a former member of the Hamburg Library Board. She also worked on many community projects.

On July 28, 1922 she was united in marriage to Roy M. Carpenter, in Watson, Mo. He preceded her in death Jan 19, 1985.

She is survived by two daughters, Cathleen Bowman and Loleta Scott, both of Sikeston, Mo; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters.

A Memorial service will be held at a later date in Hamburg. Interment will be at the High Creek Cemetery in Watson, Mo. Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are directed to Hamburg Volunteer Rescue Squad or Hamburg Public Library. [Dec 15, 1994]

 

Carpenter, Roy, a retired land owner and manager, and prominent horse breeder, died at his home in Hamburg [Iowa] Jan 20, at the age of 87.

Carpenter's prize-winning horses were sold and traded over much of the United States until recent years, under the banner of Apple Mountain Farms.

The former Hamburg councilman and school board member had been in failing health for several months.

Private services were held Wednesday at the home.

Survivors include his wife, Camille; two daughters, Mrs Lee A. (Cathleen) Bowman, and Mrs Bob (Lolita) Scott, both of Sikeston, Mo, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

LeRoy Miller Carpenter of Apple Mountain Farms, Hamburg, a civic leader and life long resident of the area died in his sleep January 20. He was 87. The son of Jennie and Burt Carpenter, he was born June 25, 1898 in Watson, Mo. He graduated from Hamburg High School and attended the State University of Iowa, Iowa city.

He served as a member of the Hamburg City Council for a number of years.

As a prominent horsebreeder, he was cited for his contribution to the development of the horse industry in Iowa and his picture hangs in the State Fair Horse Show Headquarters. He also received recognition for a number of America's best Saddlebreed stallions in a feature article appearing in the oldest show horse magazine, Saddle and Bridle.

He is survived by his wife Camille Airy Carpenter and two daughters, Mrs Lee Austin (Cathleen) Bowman and Mrs Bob (Loleta) Scott, both of Sikeston, Mo. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marilyn Carpenter Peck. Other survivors include his sister, Loleta Hill of South Pasadena, six grandchildren and a great granddaughter.

Cary, Glen, a prominent young farmer, met his death on Sunday night, August 28 [1938] just a short distance from his home, when he was struck by a freight train. Glen was 32 years of age and was survived by his parents, three sisters and other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon and burial was at High Creek cemetery. [born June 30, 1906, died Aug 28, 1938; in the Ten Years Ago column Sep 2, 1948]

 

Clark, James Madison, Rev, retired minister, died at his home in Watson [Missouri] on Monday. He was born in Mona, Indiana, and had reached the age of 82 years, 9 months and 23 days. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Watson on Tuesday and interment was made in the High Creek cemetery. [Feb 18, 1937]

Rev J. Matt Clark, who had been very ill for several days, passed on to the other life on Monday afternoon. We have not heard about the funeral at this time. [Feb 18, 1937]

[In the Twenty-five years ago column] David D. Crumley, 73, died at his home in Hamburg [Iowa] on Nov 29, following an illness of many months. Funeral services were held in Hamburg with burial at the High Creek cemetery. [Nov 27, 1947]

 

Case, Mrs Lyle, 59, died in Tarkio Tuesday morning after a short illness. She is survived by her daughter Mary at home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 2 at 2 pm at the Davis Funeral home in Tarkio with Rev Donald Briley and the Rev Wm Hutchings in charge. Burial will be in the Linden cemetery. [Apr 2, 1959]

 

Caulfield, Patricia (Martin), 44, of Colorado Springs, Colo, died Sunday, Nov 27 following a long illness at the Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs.

The Mass of the Resurrection will be said Friday, Dec 2 at 10 am at the St Paul Catholic Church in Tarkio, Mo. Father Ignatius Potts, O.S.B., will officiate.

Interment will be in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near Fairfax, Mo. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Penrose Hospital in Colorado.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, Dec 1 from 6 to 8 pm at the Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio.

Mass of Christian Burial will be said Wednesday morning at the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Colorado Springs, where Mrs Caulfield was a member.

Patricia was born July 6, 1944 at Bethany, Mo the daughter of Willis H. and Joyce I. (Spencer) Martin. She was reared in the Westboro, Mo, area and graduated from Westboro High School in 1962. She also graduated from Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville in 1966.

On Aug 11, 1967, she was united in marriage to Lawrence E. "Larry" Caulfield in Kansas City, Mo, where they made their home for 10 years. Then the family moved to Amarillo, Texas, for three years before moving to Colorado Springs in 1980.

Survivors include her husband Lawrence and two sons, Jason Edward and Jeffrey Allan, all of the home, and her parents, Mr and Mrs Willis H. Martin of Westboro, Mo.

Also surviving are one brother Charles Martin of Tarkio, Mo, one sister Mrs Wallace (Dianna) Carpenter of Rock Port, Mo, and numerous aunts and uncles and cousins and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by an infant sister Sandra Gay Martin. [1988]

 

Chambers, James Maxwell, 79, of rural Westboro, Mo, died late Tuesday, June 20, in his home. He was born near Tarkio, Mo, the son of Franklin P. and Ruby (Billups) Chambers.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 am at the Westboro United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Center Grove Cemetery near Westboro.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 pm to 8 pm at the Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio, Mo. A Jim Chambers Memorial Fund has been established.

Mr Chambers attended Bartlett Country School and Westboro High School. He farmed for several years.

He married Margaret L. Racine Nov 20, 1937, in Hiawatha, Kan. He lived and farmed in the Westboro area all of his married life.

Mr Chambers was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Maryville Eagles Club and of the Westboro United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, near Westboro; three sons: Denton Chambers, Tarkio; Max Chambers, Tarkio; and James B. Chambers, Westboro; five daughters: Mrs Ron (Sharon) Fox, Shenandoah [Iowa]; Mrs Allen (Shirley) Poore, Scottsdale, Ariz; Betty Poptanycz, Westboro; Mrs Ed (Janice) Hunkins, Westboro; and Charlene Sparks, St Charles, Mo; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers: Ralph Chambers, Tarkio, Mo; and Woodrow Chambers, Tulle Lake, Calif; three sisters: Marion Hamm, Pierce City, Mo; Dorothy Gillum, Apple Valley, Calif; and Doris Rickard, Long Beach, Calif; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Chambers, Max Frank, 63, of Westboro, Mo, died Sept 24, 2002, in Tarkio. He was born June 29, 1939, in Westboro to James Maxwell and Margaret Letitia (Racine) Chambers. He attended and graduated from Westboro schools. In 1958, Chambers enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served state side and overseas in England. He was honorably discharged in 1962. On Feb 2, 1963, he married Shirley Loveland. They were later divorced. From 1962, he was employed by the Tarkio Pelleting Corp for 40 years, retiring Sept 10. He was a member of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199 and the Westboro Methodist church.

Mr Chambers was preceded in death by his father and brother, Leo Calvin Chambers.

Survivors include his mother of Westboro; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey Max and Melinda Adams Chambers; Jason Mark and Lori Chambers of Red Oak; four grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Denton Lee and Shirley Chambers of Tarkio, Mo; and James Bert and Karla Chambers of Westboro, Mo; sisters and brothers-in-law, Charlene Sparks of Lindon, Utah; Sharon and Ron Fox of Shenandoah; Shirley and Allen Poore of Scottsdale, Ariz; Betty Poptanycz of Westboro, Mo; and Janice and Ed Hunkins of Tarkio, Mo; and special friend Katherine Clark of Tarkio.

Funeral services were Sept 27 at the United Methodist Church in Westboro with the Rev James Strieves officiating. Interment was in Center Grove Cemetery in Westboro, Mo, with military rites by Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199. Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio, Mo, was in charge of arrangements.

Christian, Charles Ray, 88, passed away March 22 at the Grape Community Hospital, Hamburg, Ia. He was born June 1, 1898 in Camdenton, Mo, the son of Ed and Laura (Braden) Christian.

In his early years Charlie attended South Missouri and Arkansas schools. He later helped his father operate a freight line and cut railroad ties.

He was united in marriage to Leona Hudson on Feb 17, 1920 in Watson. For several years they farmed in the Watson community. In 1929 he began operating the Christian Oil Company until his retirement on Sept 15, 1979. In 1980 they moved to Reed Springs, Mo. Leona passed away June 23, 1982. In 1983 Charlie moved back to the Watson and Hamburg communities where he has lived to the present time.

He was a member of the Watson Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two daughters; Mrs John (Dorothy) Huff and Mrs Kenneth (Gladys) Tharp, both of Watson; one son, Hershel Christian, Hamburg, Ia; three sisters: Leland Silvey, Versailles, Mo, Ruby Seat, Deadwood, S.D., and Cecil Yates, Camino, Cal; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents and wife, Leona, he was preceded in death by five brothers: Sherman, Clay, Roy, Paul and Calvin Christian.

Services will be held March 25 at 2:00 pm at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port, conducted by Rev David D. Norbury and Rev Caroll Fischer. Interment will be at High Creek Cemetery, east of Watson.

 

Christian, Leona, 80, Reeds Spring, a Watson [Missouri] native, died Jun 23 at the Skaggs Community Hospital at Branson [Missouri].

Born Aug 14, 1901, the daughter of Valentine and Ida (Addington) Hudson, she attended the Pleasant Valley Country School east of Watson.

She married Charlie R. Christian Feb 17, 1920 at Watson. Following their marriage, they lived near Watson and farmed. In 1929 they began operating the Watson Oil Company, which they continued to operate until their retirement in 1979. Due to her ill health, they moved to Reeds Spring in 1980, where they have resided to the present.

She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Charlie, of the home in Reeds Spring; two daughters, Mrs John (Dorothy) Huff and Mrs Kenneth (Gladys) Tharp, both of Watson; one son, Herschel Christian, Hamburg, Ia; two brothers, Luther Hudson Sr, Rock Port, and Ernest Hudson, Farragut, Ia; ten grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Fannie Vanatta, and two brothers, Henry Hudson and a younger brother, Lee.

Services were Jun 26 at the Watson Cumberland Presbyterian Church, conducted by Pastor Carroll Fischer. Interment was at High Creek Cemetery. Arrangements were by Minter Funeral Chapel.

 

Clark, Billy Dean, son of George and Jessie Clark, was born at Alimont, Mo Jan 13, 1939. He died at Grape Community Hospital [Hamburg, Ia] January 1, 1986 at the age of 46 years, 11 months and 17 days.

He spent most of his life at Watson, Mo.

On December 19, 1964 he was united in marriage to Dixie Larson at Watson and to this union four children were born.

Before his sickness Bill worked at Vogel's Fertilizer Plant of Hamburg for several years.

Bill was a member of the Hamburg Eagles Club #3971.

He was preceded in death by his father George and one infant sister.

Billy is survived by his wife Dixie; three daughters, Tracy, Linda, Juanita and one son William all of Hamburg; his mother, Jessie; a sister Jean Alley, two brothers, George of Hamburg, and Robert of Riverton; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held January 4, at Rash Funeral Home with the Rev Joe Iosbaker officiating. Interment was at High Creek Cemetery. [Jan 23, 1986]
