She graduated from Chelsea High School and attended Ward Belmont College, in Nashville, Tennessee, before transferring to the University of Oklahoma, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree with a Major in English and a Minor in French. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, and kept in close contact with Sisters after graduation.

On November 5, 1938 Mary was united in marriage to George Joseph Stevenson II in Chelsea, Oklahoma. They made their home in Bartlesville and Tulsa, Oklahoma, and, while Joe served his country as a Naval Flight Instructor during WW II, in several other cities. For a short time after the war they lived in Houston, Texas before moving to Tarkio, Missouri in 1946. Joe passed away in 1962. On March 22, 1970, Mary was united in marriage to Ralph C. Hackett of Fairfax, Missouri. They made their home in Tarkio where they lived to the present time.

Mary was a homemaker who was very active in her church and community, serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother, President of the Mule Barn Theater Guild, an elder and Sunday School teacher in the Tarkio Presbyterian Church, and a volunteer in the Auxiliary for the Community Hospital in Fairfax. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Daughters of the American Colonists, and many other organizations. For more than 50 years, she was an active member of PEO and hosted many annual Chapter FF Fashion Shows and Luncheons in her home. Mary was a beautiful woman who loved helping people.

After the untimely death of Joe, Mary became more active in the family banking and farming businesses. She served as Chairman of the Board for the Farmers and Valley Bank in Tarkio and as a member of the Board of Directors for Tarkio College.

Mary's sense of adventure and curiosity led her to every state in the union and many countries throughout the world. She traveled extensively with Joe and their children and later with her sister-in-law Mary and with Ralph, who had retired early so they could spend more time together. She loved to talk to people where-ever she found them.

Mary enjoyed sports. While at O.U., she lettered with the Rifle Team, once placing second in the collegiate women's division at a major tournament by shooting 99 out of 100! She learned to ride at a young age and enjoyed horses her entire life. She played tennis and often joined Joe in doubles tournaments. Mary loved swimming, water skiing and boating. She was instrumental in the creation of the Tarkio Swimming Pool. After the pool was constructed, she became a Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructor and taught swimming for over 30 years to hundreds of people. She delighted in meeting former students.

Music was central to Mary's life. She learned to play the piano in high school, and later became an organist. She had a lovely soprano voice and sang in the opera Carmen and was a member of the Women's Choral Club in college. Mary was a long-time member of the Presbyterian Church Choir, and occasionally played the church organ. She often played for friends and family in her home.

Hall, Mary Margaret -

Mary Margaret Hall was born near Linden, Mo., Dec. 19, 1868 and died near the place of her birth on May 8 1942, being 73 years, 4 months and 19 days of age. She was the second child of a family of five children born to Justus and Ursula Hall, pioneers of Atchison county.
In recording the death of "Aunt Mary," we must make more than a common pause. Her passing severs one more of the few remaining cords binding the unsettled present with a self-reliant past.
Upon the death of her mother in 1892, Mary made a home for her father until his death in 1925. When eighteen years of age, she received an injury from a fall which made her a cripple for life. She learned the dressmaking art and for many years followed it along with her other work at home. In early life she affiliated with the Methodist church. In all her life, she exemplified its teachings.
Of one who has lived her entire life in our community, more than seventy years of it in the same house, there would seem to be few words necessary. Any life tells its own story, but one living so long and well tells a wonderful story— and too wonderful for pen to inscribe or tongue to tell.
Besides numberless friends, many many cousins in the county and California, Aunt Mary leaves two brothers. J. W. Hall and Chas. A. Hall of High Creek community, and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, of Rock Port. One brother died in infancy, also one nephew, Justus Hall, and two great nephews, J. C. and Jimmie and one great niece, Jo Ann Hall.
Funeral services were conducted [clipping gone] Linden Cem

[124] Huston, Marjorie Jeanette died September 14, 2007, in Winchester, Kansas, where she lived the last year of her 95 years under the loving care of her nieces and nephews. She was born September 7, 1912, to William Henry and Emma Elizabeth Sloan Huston, in Atchison County, Missouri. She is survived by one sister, Rose Huffaker, of Manlius, New York.

Each of the six Huston children was born in the same farm house; was baptized and later became members of the Reformed Presbyterian (Covenanter) Church in Blanchard, Iowa; and finished eighth grade at Eureka, a one-room country school near their home. The family farm was east of Westboro, Missouri, although their address was always Blanchard, Iowa, a town divided by the state line. In one account of her youth, Jeanette wrote they enjoyed “the many good things about growing up on the farm, including the girls taking their turn at milking, shocking grain, riding, and driving horses.”

Jeanette’s college education corresponded with the heart of the Great Depression. Nevertheless, Jeanette completed two years at Tarkio College, earning a teacher’s certificate. She then taught two years in local schools and gave her salary, some $50 or $60 a month, to her next younger sister so she could go to college.
After two years, her sister took Jeanette’s teaching assignment and Jeanette finished a degree in history at Tarkio College in 1937. She taught at Blanchard High School for one year, and then earned a bachelor’s degree in library science from the University of Illinois in 1939.

For three years, Jeanette was a supervisor for the WPA Library Project in Missouri. She would drive from site to site, and recalled throughout her life the experiences of being a young woman alone in the towns and villages across the state.

Jeanette served as post and hospital librarian at Camp Carson, a U.S. Army post near Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her youngest sister Mary worked there with her during the summer of 1943. In 1946, Jeanette went to the Wood Veterans Administration Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one of the largest in the nation. In 1952, she became the chief librarian at the newly opened VA Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, returning to Wood in 1955 as medical librarian.

Jeanette became the librarian at Tarkio College in 1960, moving her mother to Tarkio with her. Her mother died in 1963. Her first challenge was to completely reorganize the existing facility, and she moved the collection twice during her tenure. Although she had built at least six library collections from scratch during her career, it was at Tarkio College she helped plan and build a new building, Thompson Library and Learning Center.

Jeanette retired in 1977 as associate professor, librarian, and lived in Tarkio, Missouri, until 2006. During her retirement, she remained active in church, college, and community affairs, and enjoyed some extended travels. Having had a life-long love of history her family’s and her community’s she became the curator of a combined museum for the Atchison County Historical Society and Tarkio College Alumni Association when Tarkio College closed in 1992. Many of her retirement hours were spent in making the North Polk schoolhouse into a Tarkio museum. Jeanette was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, the PEO chapter in Tarkio, and many community groups.

The Huston family ties with Tarkio College were a source of pride to Jeanette. Between 1921 and 1970, twenty-seven family members aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, in-laws, nieces and nephews attended Tarkio College and twenty have TC degrees.

Jeanette is survived by 20 nieces and nephews, about 60 great nieces and nephews, about 85 great-great nieces and nephews, and a handful of great-great-greats. She established an education trust for her family. Jeanette was preceded in death by her brothers Wyatt Huston and Raymond Huston, and her sisters Lorene Cornett and Mary Shields, two nephews and one great-niece. Jeanette established an education trust for her family.
