Gaines, Sarah Eleanor Millsap - Sarah Eleanor Millsap was born near Union City, Mo., February 12, 1865, the daughter of Joseph Samuel and Amanda Millsap. On Dec 24, 1890 she was united in marriage to William Jesse Gaines at the home of her parents, near Phelps City. To this union eight children were born, Mrs Sylvia Switzer, Mrs Walter Case, Everett and I B. Gaines of Watson, Mrs Grover Harmon of Phelps City, Joe of Rock Port and Willard of Junction City, Kansas. Her husband and one daughter, Amanda, preceded her in death. Besides the seven children she is survived by two sisters and one brother, Mrs Anna Schaeffer of Riverton, Mrs Marsha Record of Julian, Neb., and Sam Millsap of Glenwood, Iowa.

She joined the Methodist church at Watson when a young girl and remained a faithful member until her death. Mrs Gaines' parents were among the earliest settlers in Atchison county and this had always been her home. She was a kind and loving mother and neighbor always ready to help in any way.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev A.W. Tandy. Interment was at High Creek beside her husband.

Those from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr and Mrs Willard Gaines of Junction City, Kans., Mrs Anna Schaeffer of Riverton and Sam Millsap of Glenwood. [Apr 12, 1945]

Stephen Burke (Tony) Gaines was born in Watson, Mo. on August 5, 1939 to I. B. and Evangeline (Burke) Gaines. He died August 9, 1991 at the Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa at the age of 52 years.

Tony graduated from Watson High School in 1957 and has lived all his life in the Watson Community.

He was a graduate of Tarkio College in Tarkio, Mo. and had taught school for 28 years in Oregon, Craig, Watson and most recently in the Rock Port R-11 School in Rock Port. He was junior high football and baskctball coach.

On August 29, 1969, Tony was united in marriage to Sharon Lynn Easley at the Baptist Church in Rock Port. Most of their married life they have resided in Watson.

He was a member of the Watson United Methodist Church and was a former member of the United States Army Reserves.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon, of the home; his mother Evangeline Gaines of Rock Port; three children, Stephen B., Sarah and Seth Gaines all of the home; two sisters,   Betty Haun of Hamburg,  and Sandra Farnsworth of Adair, Iowa; two aunts and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father I. B. Gaines and an infant sister Mae Jane Gaines.

Funeral services were held Aug. 12 at the Rock Port High School gymnasium, with the Rev. Richard D. Adams and Dr. Mark Turnbaugh officiating. Interment was in High Creek Cemetery. Minter Funeral Chapel was in charge.

Chas. Garst Dies Fri., Nov. 10
Charles Martin Garst, son of Frederick and Mahala Garst, was born Sept. 18, 1855 In Washington, county, Tennessee, and passed away at his home in Hamburg, la., November 10, 1939, at the age of 84 years 1 month and 22 days.

He was united in marriage with Melvina Isabelle Hall December 25, 1878, who preceded him in death. Two sons were born to this union, namely, Frederick Sylvester and Leon L., of Watson. He was married to Nettie E. Clayton January 27, 1897, who, with nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and his many friends and relatives mourn his passing. He was the eldest of seven children, of whom two survive, namely, George W., of Watson, and Mrs. Ella Andes of McPherson, Kan. The deceased are Sarah, Frederick, Mary Jane and Rueben. In his early life he united with the Church of the Brethren of which he was a faithful member. He was a successful farmer in Atchison county, Missouri, until 1913, when he moved to Fremont county, still carrying on an active interest in farming.
In his years of residence in Hamburg he was always active and about his work until the last, although for some months he had been in failing-health. While his death did not come as a shock to his many friends, his passing brought sorrow and his absence from our streets will be quite noticable.
The funeral services were held Monday at his home in Hamburg, and burial was made in the family lot in the High Creek cemetery.
Pall bearers were Arthur Woods, Geo. Boettner, Ortel Bayless, Howard Colon, Frank Liess, Wint Good, Elza James and Cliff Good.

Garst, Cora Finnell - Cora Finnell Garst, sister of Hugh Finnell passed away at her home in Kansas City, Monday and was brought to Watson for burial Wednesday. The obituary will appear next week. [May 23, 1946]

George W. Garst passed away at his home near Watson, April 9, 1952 at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 8 days.
Mr. Garst was born in Washington County, Tennessee, Aug. 1, 1860, the son of Frederick and Mahala Garst. Most of his life was spent in Atchison County where he was a successful farmer.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Helen Boettner of Watson and three grandchildren, Donald and Robert Stanton of Watson and Mrs. Hope Furin of near Rock Port. There is also one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife and one daughter, Mabel Grace Stanton. Funeral services were held at the High Creek church, conducted by Rev. Kenneth Wampler, pastor of the Brethren Church near Mound City. Burial was made in the family lot in the High Creek cemetery. [Apr 24. 1961]

Mrs. Geo. Garst of near Watson passed away at the Hamburg hospital on Sunday afternoon. She had submitted to a major operation on Saturday and was doing nicely when a sudden turn came— death following. She was 45 years, 2 months and 19 days of age. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, 'August 28, and burial was made at High Creek cemetery.

Mary Garst services Feb. 18
Mary Kathern Garst, 81, died at Grape Community Hospital [Hamburg, Ia], Feb. 14. She had worked at the hospital office in earlier years.
She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Ziolkowski of Hamburg and Janet Russell of Wataga, IL; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one sister, Dorothy Moore of Nebraska City.

Funeral service's were held Feb. 18, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hamburg, with Father Don Brack as Celebrant. Interment was in High Creek Cemetery, Watson, MO. Rash-Gude Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. [Feb 21, 2002]

Mary Kathern Garst was born Dec. 6, 1920 at Watson, MO, the daughter of Michael Windell and Emma Jane (Ruble) Leisman. She was one of seven children.
She attended school in Watson, MO and graduated from the Watson High School with the class of 1937.
In February, 1939, she was united in marriage to Merris M. Garst at Tarkio, MO.
Mary worked in the office of Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hamburg. While living in the Watson area, she was a member of the Book Club and the Homemakers Club.
She is survived by her two daughters, Brenda Ziolkowski of rural Hamburg, and Janet Russell, Wataga, IL; eight grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Dorothy Moore of Nebraska City.
She was preceded in death by her husband July 2, 1990; brothers Raymond, Fred, John and Carl Leisman and a sister Alice Ellison.
Mary died Feb. 14, 2002 at Grape Community Hospital [Hamburg, Ia] at the age of 81 years, two months and eight days.
Funeral services were held Feb. 18, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hamburg, with Father Don Brack as Celebrant. Interment was in High Creek Cemetery, Watson, MO. Rash-Gude Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. [Feb 21, 2002]

Merris M. Garst, son of Sylvester Frederick and Nora (Crockett) Garst, was born Dec. 28, 1920 in Watson, MO. He died July 2, 1990 at the Community Hospital in Fairfax, Mo. at the age of 69 years, 6 months and 4 days.
He received his education in the Watson schools graduating from Watson High school in 1938.
In February of 1939 he was united in marriage to Mary Leisman. To this union two daughters, Brenda and Janet were born. They made their home and farmed in the Watson community.
On October 1, 1978 he was united in marriage to Helen Mensen. They have made their home in Rock Port to the present time.
Throughout the years Merris has been involved with cattle buying and feeding and had been a motel owner and operator.
Merris was baptized and became a member of the Watson Baptist Church. He was a former member of the Sonora Lodge Number 200, A.F. & A.M. of Watson and was presently a member of the North Star Lodge Number 157 A.F. & A.M. of Rock Port.

He is survived by his wife Helen, Rock Port; two daughters, Brenda Ziolkowski of Hamburg, and Janet Russell of Wataga, Ill.; one stepdaughter Patricia Hecker of Fairfax; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; three sisters, Ellabelle Sipple, Los Angeles, Calif., Willis Greever, Phoenix, Ariz., and Cavell Fritch of Northridge, Calif.; one brother, Meville Garst of Brighton, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Gilbert and Orville.
Funeral services were held July 5 at the Baptist Church in Rock Port with the Rev. George Owens and the Rev. Carroll Fischer officiating.
Interment was in High Creek Cemetery, Watson. Minter Funeral Chapel was in charge of services. [Jul 12, 1990]

Gerdes, Harmon - Harmon Gerdes of Rock Port, died Aug 9 [1982] at the Fairfax hospital. He would have been 100 in October.

Survivors include one son, Bob Gerdes, San Mateo, Claif; daughters, Mrs Glen (Betty) Murphy, Hamburg, Mrs Gertrude Tookey, Rangely, Colo., Mrs Doris Muntz, and Mrs Keith Stepp, both of Rock Port, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 19, 1994, at Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio for Margaret Mildred George of Tarkio. Reverend Dale O'Connell officiated. Interment was made in Tarkio Home Cemetery in Tarkio.
Margaret Mildred George, age 90, passed away Saturday, January 15,1994, at Bethesda Care Center in Tarkio. She was born February 20, 1903, in Princeton, Indiana, to Jennie (Piper) and Samuel Rutherford Davis. Following her high school graduation in Princeton, Mildred entered Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, at the age of 17, and graduated in 1924. She taught junior high school in Beaver Falls for one year.
On June 30, 1925, Mildred was united in marriage in Beaver Falls to Robert Wilfred George, who had just returned from teaching on the island of Cyprus. Since August of 1925, the Georges had made their home in Tarkio where Dr. George taught 43 years and later retired Emeritus in Psychology from Tarkio College in Tarkio. They were a very distinguished couple and were dedicated to the community of Tarkio and Tarkio College all of their married life. Dr. George passed away March 1,1991.
Through the years, Mildred was a devoted member of the Tarkio Presbyterian Church and had served as superintendent of the primary department for many years. She was a member of the American Association of University Women and had sponsored the Young Women's Christian Association at Tarkio College. For many years, she was active and enjoyed her memberships in the Tarkio Chapter FF of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, the Tarkio Sorosis Club and the Tarkio Young At Heart Club, of which she was a charter member. Many years ago, Mildred helped originate the first Cub Scout program in Tarkio.

Survivors include: one son, Weyman B. George, Macomb, Illinois; two daughters, Mrs. John G. (Joyce) Evans, Edwardsville, Illinois, and Mrs. Stan (Jean) Wheatley, Casper, Wyoming; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Besides her parents and husband, Mildred was preceded in death by a son, Wilfred George. Memorials may be directed to the Children's Department of the Tarkio Presbyterian Church in Tarkio. Geyer, Kenneth Dale - Kenneth Dale Geyer, 54, passed away June 20, 1998, at a hospital in Sacramento, California. He was formerly of Tarkio, Missouri.

He was born Apr 2, 1944, at Tarkio to Jesse C. and Verda Allen Geyer. He graduated at Tarkio High School in 1963. He was employed at the Sheltered Workshop in Rock Port before moving to California a few years ago.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister. He is survived by two sisters, Ethel Morrison, Burlington Junction and Linda Steinke, Springfield, Missouri; a niece and several nephews.

Memorial graveside services were Friday, July 31, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. at the Home Cemetery, Tarkio.

Golderman, Lew - Lew Golderman, for many years a resident of Fremont county [Iowa], dropped dead in the yard at his home in Atchison county [Missouri] on Friday. Funeral services were held at High Creek church Sunday and burial was made in the cemetery at that place. [1938]

Joel Lee Gibson Jr.
Joel Lee Gibson Jr., infant son of Daisey L. Kirkpatrick and Joel Lee Gibson of Westboro, Mo., was born and died March 20, 2001, at the Heartland East Hospital in St. Joseph, Mo.
Maternal grandparents are Jerry and Carol Kirkpatrick of Westboro; paternal grandparents are Carl Gibson and Judy Ebersole, both of Shenandoah. Paternal great-grandparents are Lester and Mary Woods of Shenandoah. Maternal great great-grandmother is Dollie Kirkpatrick of Gresham, Ore.
Funeral services were March 24 at the Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio, Mo. A private interment was at the Center Grove Cemetery in Westboro, Mo.
Memorials may be directed to the Joel Lee Gibson Jr. memorial fund. Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio, Mo., was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Marian Good died at her home in Watson on Saturday afternoon, following a short illness The deceased was well known in Hamburg, having lived here at one time. She was a sister of A. H. Brainard. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Lawless of St Joseph, and the remains were laid to rest in the High Creek cemetery. [1928]

Mrs. Marian Good, sister of A. H. Brainard, died at her home in Watson on Saturday. Funeral ser-
vices were held from the home and burial was made at the High Creek cemetery.

Good, William - Mr. and Mrs. Earl Boettner were called to St. Joseph Saturday morning by the illness of Mrs. Boettner's father, Wm. Good. He passed away a little while after the Boettner's arrived.   Wm. Good, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Good, was born Oct. 27, 1868, died at the Missouri Methodist hospital in St. Joe, Nov. 30, 1940. In 1889 he was married  to Dora Noble. To this union was born four children, Mrs. Earl Boettner of this place, Raymond of Parksville, Mo., John of Spalding, Nebr., and Earl of Council Bluffs, la.  Besides his widow and children he leaves five grandchildren, a niece and one sister Mrs. Homer Hudson. One brother preceeded him in death several years ago. He was a member of the Cumberland  Presbyterian church. Funeral services were held from that church Monday morning, conducted by Rev. Tandy.  Burial was at High Creek. [Dec 5, 1940]

Will Good Passes Away. William Henry Good was born in Watson, Mo., Oct. 27, 1868 and passed away at the Missouri Methodist hospital in St. Joe. Mo., Nov. 30, 1940, at the age of 72 years, one month and three days. Mr. Good was well known in Hamburg and has many friends here who mourn his passing. Wilferd Walter Graves Sr. was born Jan. 28, 1908, in Fairfax, Mo., the son of Samuel William and Vivian W. (Price) Graves. He died Jan. 26, 1990, at the Community Hospital in Fairfax at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 29 days.
Mr. Graves attended Pleasant Ridge Country School. After graduating from Fairfax High School in 1927, he farmed west of Fairfax.
On Aug. 23, 1931, he was united in marriage to Alta Mary Peterson in Tarkio, Mo. They made their home in Fairfax where Wilferd operated Graves Feeds and Seeds and also a portable grinding business. For several years he operated the Fairfax Standard Oil Station. They began farming in 1944.
After moving to Tarkio in 1946 he became field manager for the S.J. Peterson Construction Company. Once again in 1949 he began farming and continued until his retirement in 1982. His wife, Alta Mary, died on May 20, 1981.
Mr. Graves was united in marriage to Mary Glasgo on Dec. 18, 1982. They made their home in Tarkio. He entered the Bethesda Care Center in Tarkio in November of 1987. Since January of 1988 he has been a resident of Community Hospital extended care.
Through the years Mr. Graves enjoyed his grandchildren to the fullest. He also enjoyed traveling and spending his winters in Arizona.
Mr. Graves was a member of the Fairfax Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Essex; two sons: Wilferd W. Graves Jr., Sioux City; and Samuel B. Graves of Tarkio, Mo.; a niece, Sandra L. Karns of Albuquerque, N.M., who was reared in his home; two sisters: Marion Frede Douglas, Fairfax; and Rebecca Belle Moore, Marshal, Ark.; and one brother, Maurice Graves, Fairfax.
He is also survived by eight grandchildren, three great-grand­children and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Winston Graves.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 28, at the Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio, Mo. The Rev. David Winfrey officiated. Pallbearers were Mike Roberts, Samuel B. Graves Jr., Danny Graves, Ted Graves, Duane Bruna and Robert Graves.
Memorials were directed to the Community Hospital in Fairfax, Mo.
Interment was in the Tarkio Home Cemetery in Tarkio, Mo. [1990]

Grebe, Richard Deane, Sr., the son of James Martin and Emma Marie (Christian) Grebe, was born October 9, 1921 in Rock Port, Missouri. He attended high school in Rock Port and earned his GED after entering the United States Army. While proudly serving his country during World War II and the Korean War, he attended various technical schools. Richard was honorably discharged from military duty in January of 1952.

On July 25, 1942, Richard was united in marriage to Nellie Ruth Sutter in Rock Port. They became the parents of Richard, Jr. and Karen. Nellie passed away on January 16, 1980. Richard was united in marriage to Norma Jean Sanders on December 8, 1987 in Miami, Oklahoma. They made their home in Tarkio to the present time.

Richard was the plant manager for Manley Popcorn, Tarkio and the owner/operator of Grebe Machine Shop, Tarkio. He was also a farm manager and farmed for himself in the Burlington Junction, Missouri area. He was a 60 year member of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199, Tarkio, a 33rd Degree Mason of the Tarkio Masonic Lodge, a member of the Scottish Rite, and former Fire Chief of the Tarkio Volunteer Fire Department. Richard passed away June 3, 2008 at the St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Missouri at the age of 86 years.

Besides his parents and first wife Nellie, Richard is preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Grebe; grandson, Josh Jarman; grandparents, John Martin and Virginia Isabelle (Underwood) Grebe and David Beauregaurd and Eliza Jane (Walker) Christian; son Robert Burns; uncle Clyde Grebe and various other relatives.

Richard is survived by his wife Norma of their home in Tarkio; son, Dick Grebe and his wife Sharon, Tarkio; daughter, Karen Jarman, Greeley, Colorado; son, Randy Burns and his wife Gina, Gladstone, Missouri; daughter, Debbie Luce and her husband Dave, St. Louis, Missouri; son, Mike Burns, Kansas City, Missouri; brother, Jim Grebe and his wife Betty, St. Joseph, Missouri; grandchildren, Cherie Jarman, Greeley; Terry Grebe, Tarkio; Teresa Boldra, Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Charlotte Grebe, Wichita, Kansas; brother-in-law, Jim Yoemans, Grandview, Missouri; numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Geraldine (Willis) Griffin, 82 Midland, Texas, formerly of Bosworth, Mo., died Saturday, August 14,1993, at a local hospital.
Born in Bosworth, Mrs. Griffin was graduated from high school there and Central Methodist College at Fayette, Mo., with a degree in education.
Mrs. Griffin taught at Bosworth and Carrollton, Mo., and then from 1948 to 1961 in Roswell, N.M.
She married Jack Griffin. The couple moved to Midland in the early 1970s. He passed away in 1978.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Boone Bible Class, all of Midland.
Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Harper of Houston, Texas; and two grandchildren.

John Griffin, pioneer settler of this community, died at the Hotel Julien, on Monday. When Mr. Griffen did not come down from his room at the usual hour, the proprietor, Mr. E. E. Roberts, went up to determine the reason. He discovered that Mr. Griffin had died in his sleep, during the night. Mr. Griffin had seemingly been in his usual good health, and his death came as a complete surprise to his friends and relatives. John Griffin was 83 years, 5 months and 21 days old at the time of his death. Funeral services were to be held from the M. E. church at two o'clock on Friday, and interment was to be made in the family lot at the Grange Hall cemetery. [Mar 19, 1932]

Wilkinson nephew is accident victim
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Wilkinson of Coin received word this week of the death of her nephew, David Grubb, of North Bend, Ne, who was killed in a traffic accident Jan. 4. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Grubb of North Bend.
He was the grandson of Jennie Harrel, formerly of Coin. Services will be held this Friday in North Bend with burial in Rock Port, Mo. [Jan 6, 1983]

Geer, Mary Jane Kenner - Mrs Mary Jane Kenner Geer, 85 years old, died at midnight Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs Edna E. Utter, 122 South Buchanan [Maryville, Missouri] street after a long illness. She was married to Enoch W. Geer August 3, 1884, in St Genevieve county, Mo. Mr Geer died in 1916. She has been a resident of Maryville since September, 1936.

She was born April 20, 1859, in St Genevieve county, the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Housand Kenner. She graduated from Carleton College, Farmington, Mo. Mrs Geer was a member of the First Baptist church.

Besides her daughter, Mrs Utter, she is survived by a granddaughter, Miss Betty Utter, Kansas City, Mo.; and one brother, Dr Edwin B. Kenner, Wentzville, Mo.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at Campbell funeral home with Dr A.C. Kruer, officiating.

Gaines, Lois Alene Brown - Lois Alene (Brown) Gaines was born in Hamburg, Iowa on May 10, 1930 to Donald and Mae (Rush) Brown. She passed away November 6, 2008 at her home in Rock Port at the age of 78 years.

Lois graduated from Hamburg High School, Hamburg, in 1947. On June 6, 1947, she was united in marriage to Joseph R. Gaines, Jr at the Baptist Church in Hamburg. They made their home in Rock Port for 61 years.

Besides her parents and husband, Lois was preceded in death by a grandson, a brother and a sister. Lois is survived by her sons, Joseph R. III (Trey) Gaines and his wife Betty of the home, Gary Alan Gaines and his wife Robin, Covington, Tennessee and Barry Eugene Gaines and his wife Sally, Waukegan, Illinois; nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Asher, Colorado Springs, Colorado; two brothers, Eugene (Gene) Brown and his wife Diana, La Vista, Arkansas, Donald (Dick) Brown and his wife Margie, Colorado Springs, sister-in-law, Audrey Wright, Kansas City, Missouri; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Garst, Belva Mae Carder - Belva Mae Garst, the daughter of Richard and Pinkney (Patterson) Carder was born May 21, 1911 in Farnum, Nebraska. Belva attended Bethany School through the eighth grade and Watson High School, Watson, Missouri, graduating in 1929. Belva then enrolled in Peru State Teachers College, graduating in 1933. She taught school at Ingham and Huntley, Nebraska for a short time.

On July 19, 1934 Belva was united in marriage to Orville Sylvester Garst in Watson. They made their home on the Garst Family farm and became the parents of two sons; Charlee Miles and Richard Sylvester. In 1961, they built a new home in Rock Port, where Belva lived until ill health required her move to Pleasant View Nursing Home in 2007. Orville passed away in 1974. Belva developed a close friendship with Bob Hays in the years following Orville’s death and had been special friends with Lillie Leisman from her youth. Belva passed away Friday, February 26, 2010 at Pleasant View Nursing Home at the age of 98 years.

While living in Watson, Belva was a member of the Watson Homemakers and the Watson Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and had served on numerous committees and offices. After moving to Rock Port, Belva became an active member of the Rock Port Baptist Church and the Garden Club. She enjoyed many hobbies; including oil painting and growing a large variety of beautiful flowers. At the age of 68, Belva began playing golf. For her 90th birthday, she and Charlee played six holes in Rock Port.

Besides her parents and husband, Orville, Belva was preceded in death by one son, Richard Sylvester Garst and a brother, Byron Carder. Survivors include; one son, Charlee Miles Garst and his wife, Ardis, Rock Port; one daughter-in-law, Jeanne Garst, Watson, Missouri; five grandchildren, Dayan Garst, Tammy Creten and husband, Gary, Garry Garst and wife, Jill, Jim Garst and wife, Tracey, Melinda Hunsberger and husband, Jesse; five great grandchildren, Tarah, Laura, Trey, Alex, Scarlett; one great great-grandchild, Kynzie; one sister, Jeannette Tische and husband, Francis, Lincoln, Nebraska; and five nieces and nephews.

Gebhards, Robert Behrend - Robert Behrend Gebhards, the son of Benard Behrend and Ruby Claire (Greenley) Gebhards, was born February 3, 1931 in Phelps City, Missouri. He attended Rock Port Schools in his youth, graduating from Rock Port High School in 1949. Robert graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1953 with a degree in Agriculture and was active in the ROTC program, being commissioned into the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant. He was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma for two years and honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. He was active in the Army Reserves until 1961.

Robert was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann Hilger of Hamburg, Iowa on September 19, 1953. They made their home at Fort Sill where their son, David was born. In 1956 they moved to Westboro, where they began their farming career. It was at this time, their daughter Karen was welcomed into the family. In 1958, they moved to Rock Port, Missouri where Robert continued his farming career. Robert also worked as a mechanic at Boulware Chevy Garage in Rock Port for a short time and surveyed for the Atchison County Soil and Water Conservation Service. He was a farmer’s farmer; he thoroughly loved growing corn and studying ways to improve yields and become a success at his profession. Robert hobbies included hunting, fishing, snow skiing, water skiing, boating, golfing, and spending time with family. He passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at Golden Living Center, Nebraska City, Nebraska, at the age of 78 years.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Rock Port, the Missouri Corn Growers Association and the National Corn Growers Association. He formerly served on the Atchison County Coop Board and National Corn Merchandising Board; was on the Board of Directors as a founding member of Golden Triangle Energy Coop, a member of Atchison County Soil and Water Conservation District Board, Atchison County Farm Bureau, and a member of Theta Chi Fraternity, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Susan Gebhards. Robert is survived by his wife of the home, Elizabeth; son, David Gebhards and his wife, Kay, Rock Port, daughter, Karen Vette and her husband, Bobby, Westboro; grandchildren, Brian Vette, Rock Port, Nicole Vette, Tim and Kara Vette, all of Olathe, Kansas, Christopher and Rebekah Gebhards, Rock Port, Ben and Jessica Gebhards, Cincinnati, Ohio; two great grandsons, Isaac Vette and Gabriel Gebhards, brother, John Gebhards, Newburgh, New York, sister, Ann Meade and husband, Jim, Lebanon, Missouri.

Gibreal, Marjorie Irene - Marjorie Irene Gibreal, 83, St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of Fairfax, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, after a brief illness. She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Gibreal, Atlanta, Georgia; sons Mark Gibreal, Branson, Missouri, and Steven Thompson, Wauneta, Nebraska; grandchildren Leslie and Kristy Thompson; several great grandchildren; sisters, Freda Faulkner, Florence, Arizona, Doris Wennihan and Betty Spratt, Tarkio, Missouri, Frances Kruger, Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska; brothers, Johnny and Leslie Thompson, Tucson, Arizona.

Gorman, Bernard Wells - Bernard Wells Gorman, the son of LeRoy Earl and Jettie Pearl (Wells) Gorman, was born, the first of five children, in Mannington, West Virginia on June 3, 1905. Always a lover of books and language, Bernard was drawn at an early age to question everything. He was on the debate team in high school and college. He worked in the oil fields in West Virginia and Texas to put himself through school. After moving to Lyons, Kansas, Bernard operated a pumping station 12 hours a day through the dust storms of 1935. While living in Lyons, he met and married Marjorie Harmon, his wife of 72 years. Although World War II was raging in 1942, the young couple moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where Bernard could realize his dream of becoming a lawyer. However, shortly after enrolling in Kansas City University Law School, his draft number came up. Having heard that the army needed petroleum pipeline personnel, he enlisted instead, and spent his duty building pipeline and installing pumps in North Africa. After being discharged from the army, he returned to Kansas City to finish law school. After graduation, the couple moved to Tarkio, Missouri, where Bernard started his law practice, eventually becoming the Atchison County prosecuting attorney. He occasionally taught courses in political science, business law, and argumentation and debate at Tarkio College. He retired from his law practice in 1994 at age 89. Bernard passed away on June 17, 2009 in St. Louis Park, Minnesota at the age of 104 years.

A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Marjorie, 4 children,
Bill, Pat, Becky, and Wells, 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and 2 brothers.

He will be missed.

Graham, Helen Grace Lester - Helen Grace (Lester) Graham, the daughter of Leslie Ralph and Carole (Harmon) Lester was born July 1, 1944 in Phelps City, Missouri. She attended school in Tarkio, Missouri, graduating in 1962.

On March 19, 1961, Helen was united in marriage to Cleo Junior Graham. After a short time living in Tarkio, they moved to Los Angeles, California, returning to the Tarkio area in 1963.
Helen was a cook in several local restaurants, working more recently at Casey’s and Dave’s Convenience. She spent most of her time as a homemaker; her family and home was her life. Helen passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at her home in Tarkio at the age of 65 years.

Preceding Helen in death were her parents. Survivors include her husband, Junior, Tarkio; two sons, Phillip Graham and Greg Graham and a daughter, Jeanne Wallace, all of Tarkio; four grandchildren, Briana Wallace, Tarkio, Trent Phelps, Maryville, Missouri, Tiffaney Graham, Fairfax, Missouri and Tawni Graham, Tarkio; one brother, Paul Lester and his wife, Karen, Tarkio; nephews, John Lester and his wife, Julie, Tarkio, Ron Baker and his wife, Trudy, Fairfax, Duane Lester and his wife, Sarah, Quitman, Missouri and Matthew Lester and his wife, Alyssa, Alexander, Virginia; niece, Kay Baucom, Tarkio; numerous other nieces and nephews.

Grebe, Betty Jane Campbell - Betty Jane (Campbell) Grebe, the daughter of Otho Faye and Gladys Clara (Gigous) Campbell, was born November 30, 1936 in Tarkio, Missouri. She attended school and graduated from Tarkio High School in 1954. While in high school, she met her future husband, Jimmie D. Grebe and they were united in marriage on August 12, 1956 in Tarkio.

Betty Jane, beloved wife, mother and grandma, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2009, surrounded by her family, at Saxton Care Center, St. Joseph, Missouri at the age of 72 years.

Besides her parents, Betty Jane is preceded in death by two brothers, Junior and Bob; and two sisters, Evelyn and Lois.

Betty is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jim, of their home in St. Joseph, Missouri; children, Susan (Danny) Burton, St. Joseph, Tim (Janey) Grebe , St. Joseph and Janie (Ken) Baker Gower, Missouri; grandchildren, Brandi Viestenz, Angie (Chris) Kowalewycz , Ashlee Grebe, J.D. Baker and Kadi Baker; great grandchildren, Kenzie Grooms and Christopher Kowalewycz; sister, Phyllis Ann Green, Sun City, Arizona; three step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Gorman, Reuben P. - Reuben P. Gorman of Atchison county, Mo., died Sunday, Oct 26, 1919, at the home of his nephew, Scott Gorman, in Creston, Iowa, at the age of 75 years 10 months and 12 days. He was the brother of the late Samuel Gorman and Ann Gorman of the Clarinda vicinity and among his surviving relatives are S.B. Gorman and brother, R.T. Gorman, both of this city, who went to Holt county, Mo., to attend the funeral which was held Tuesday under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity. Reuben P. Gorman was a soldier in the Union army in the Civil war. His life occupation was that of farming. While his farm was situated in Atchison county it was near the Holt county line. He leaves a son, John Gorman, residing in Atchison county, Mo., and a daughter, Mrs Maude Pierce, at Hamburg [Iowa]. While he had never lived in this vicinity he had visited here at different times.
