Fall, Janis Elaine Melvin was born at home on July 15, 1936, in Rock Port, Missouri, the daughter of Herbert and Gertrude Melvin. Jan was a 1954 graduate of Rock Port High School, where her many activities included a year as Grand Worthy Advisor for Rainbow Girls of Missouri. She attended William Woods College before graduating from the University of Missouri in 1958 with a B. A. in English literature. She was a member of the Delta Delta Delta fraternity.

She married Jim Fall of West Memphis, Arkansas, in 1959. Pursuing Jim's career as a journalist, they lived in Carbondale, Illinois; Fayetteville, North Carolina; Rock Port; West Memphis, Arkansas; Albany, Missouri; El Dorado, Arkansas; and Maryville, Missouri, before making their home in Helena in 1995. Jan worked as a teacher, librarian, Realtor and in several bookstores. She was a constant helper and companion to Jim in his newspaper career.

In Helena, Jan was an active member of St. Peter's Episcopal Cathedral and the Episcopal Church Women; she was honored as Volunteer of the Year by the Friends of the Montana Historical Society, and served as treasurer of the Fortnightly Club of Helena. Jan was a PEO, Chapter AY Montana.

Jan is survived by her husband, Jim, of Helena, retired executive director of the Montana Newspaper Association, and three children, Tim and wife, Jennifer, of Venice, California; Susie and her husband, Bob Fagan, of Overland Park, Kansas; and Sarah and husband, Frosty Tempel, of Fort Worth, Texas.

Following treatment for lymphoma in 2002, Jan had returned to a very active life, traveling to see her family and enjoying her many friends. She became ill and declined rapidly in the span of just over one week. Jan died Sunday, September 24, 2006 while resting peacefully in St. Peter's Hospital, Helena. She was 70 years old.

Graveside memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday November 20th, 2006, at Elmwood Cemetery, Rock Port. Memorials may be directed to the Liberty Theater, in care of, Atchison County Memorial Building Foundation.

FAY, PHYLLIS JANE (CURFMAN)

Phyllis Curfman Fay, daughter of Mildred and Ardury Curfman, grew up in Tarkio, Missouri, graduated from Tarkio High School and went on to Tarkio College and graduated with a business degree. The year previous to her graduation; she was married to Robert H: Fay (1938). In college she was voted most popular girl on the college campus. She was an active memberof Lambda Sigma Tau, Sigma Delta, YWCA and Women's Athletic Association. Her married life began in Chicago, Illinois, where she and Robert lived for a short time. When they moved back to Tarkio their first daughter Carol was born.
During the war years, Phyllis and Bob moved to Shenandoah, Iowa. Just before her husband went off to the Pacific Theater, a second daughter Kathy was added to their family.
In 1948, Phyllis and her family moved to Rock Port where her husband became a hardware merchant and Phyllis happily settled into full-time motherhood and part-time bookkeeper for the hardware store. In 1950, a third daughter Sally was born. They spent the next 25 years of their lives immersed in the hardware store and raising a family.
Phyllis taught in the Rock Port school system as a business teacher, worked at the Atchison County CO­OP, all the while participating in P.E.O. Chapter DU, Cosmopolitan Club, Bridge Club, Sorosis, Fire and Legion Auxiliaries, and church activities. Phyllis passed away at St.Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City, Nebraska, February 7, 2002, at the age of 84 years.

Funeral services for Robert H. Fay of Rock Port were held at the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port at 10 a.m. Wed., Mar. 8.
The retired area businessman was 83. Military rites were conducted for the Navy veteran of WWII by the Ralph Greer American Legion Post 49 of Rock Port. Interment was in the Home Cemetery at Tarkio.
A Tarkio College graduate, he started his career at the Jay Drug Co. in Shenandoah, moving on to the Rock Port Hardware business in 1949. He was involved in many groups, including Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, American Legion, Pool Board, School Board, the fire department, and Boy Scouting.
He was on the Rock Port Telephone Co. Board, and tone, to become President of the National Telephone Cooperative Assn.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; three children, Carol, Highland Park, Ill.; Katharine, Hamburg; and Sarah, Overland Park, KS.; brother Curtis Fay of Olive Branch, Miss.; sister Harriet White, Derby, KS., eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Hurst Fay was bom July 8, 1916, in Tarkio,,Missouri, to Harry DeLos and Myrtle (Hurst) Fay. He grew up in Tarkio, graduated from high school in 1935 and Tarkio College in 1938. He was president of the student body in college and participated in track and football, lettering all 4 years.

On June 2,1938, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Curfman. To this union three daughters were born: Carol
(Mrs. Barry) Carts, Katharine (Mrs. Dan) Boatman, and Sarah (Mrs. James) Steinheider.           

In 1941 he went to Shenandoah, Iowa, to work for the George Jay Drug Company until 1949. During the time he lived in Shenandoah, he was inducted into the United States Navy (1943) and after training, went to the Philippines. Bob achieved the rank of Lt. J.G. during World War II and served aboard an ocean-going tug boat (ATA 122) stationed in. the South Pacific, towing units to the war zone until 1945, when he was discharged and returned to Shenandoah.
He had brief stints teaching high school in the Westboro and Watson, Missouri school systems and was an advocate for higher education.
Bob and his family moved to Rock Port, Missouri in 1949 where he was a prominent businessman and community leader owning and operating Rock Port Hardware. He was involved in many community organizations giving his time and energy to the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, American Legion, Rock Port Pool Board, Rock Port School Board, volunteering for the Rock Port Fire Department, and active in Boy Scouts.
Bob was the second Eagle Scout in Atchison County, later served as cub and scout master and was given the Silver Beaver award in St. Joseph for his outstanding years of service to the young men in scouting.  

He was dedicated to and served on the Rock Port Telephone Company Board. On the national level he served as President of the National Telephone Cooperative Association during 1986-87. Bob's most recent award was presented in 1993: the Director Life Achievement Award of the NTCA . Bob had a variety of interests and hobbies, among them photography, gardening and woodworking. He built tables and chests for his home in Rock Port. He had a love of sports and supported all of the Rock Port Blue Jay teams. In fact, he was still timing Blue Jay relays until his late 70s.
He passed away March 5, 2000 at the Beverly Health Care Center in Nebraska City, Nebraska at the age of 83 years. 
Bob is survived by his wife, Phyllis three children, Carol, Highland Park, Illinois, Katharine, Hamburg, Iowa and Sarah, Overland Park, Kansas; brother Curtis Fay, Olive Branch, Mississippi, sister, Harriet White, Derby, Kansas, brother-in-law, Dale Schoonover, Lindale, Texas; eight grandchildren Curt, Andy and Peter Caris, David and Clay Boatman. Eric, Brett and Jill Steinheider; two great-grandchildren Carson and Conner Boatman.
Preceding him in death were his parents, sister, Marjorie Schoonover and brother-in-law, Robert White.
Services were Wednesday, March 8, 2000 at 10:00 AM at the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port, Missoui and were conducted by Pastor Tim Carey.
Interment at Home Cemetery in Tarkio, Missouri.

Forbey, Christopher

SHENANDOAH — A Tarkio, Mo., man was fatally injured Friday after the car he was driving ran off the road.
Christopher Forbey, 27, was driving his 1996 Ford Taurus station wagon on Route Z in Atchison County five miles southwest of Fairfax, Mo. Officials from the Missouri State Patrol in St. Joseph, Mo., report that at 9 p.m. Forbey lost control of the vehicle and ran off the left-hand side of the roadway.

Forbey was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the accident has not been determined.

Forbey was employed at the Eaton Corp plant in Shenandoah. [Valley News, Shenandoah, Ia, Jun 15, 1999]

Fox, James Harrison "Jim", son of Charles M. and Jasimine Fox, was born April 18, 1916 east of Tarkio, Missouri. He passed away Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at Northview Manor, Tarkio, at the age of 90.

Jim was united in marriage to Josephine English in 1940. Jim honorably served his country in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He spent a good portion of his life in St. Louis, and moved back to Rock Port in 1988. He was an interior decorator as well as a small cafe owner/operator. Jim also owned his own tractor trailer rig, which he and his wife operated for a few years.

While health allowed, Jim belonged to The Eagles AERIE 3767 of Auburn, Nebraska for several years. He also donated much time to the Rock Port Nutrition Center.

He is survived by his sister Sharley Branson and her husband Lloyd, Rock Port; one aunt, Elsie Hoagland, St. Joseph, Missouri; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents and wife, Jim was preceded in death by his step mother Loretta K. Fox; four brothers and one infant sister.

Graveside services and burial were held Saturday, December 9, 2006 at 2:00 p.m., Home Cemetery, Tarkio, MO. There was no scheduled family visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Rock Port Nutrition Center.

Frazier, Naomi buried at Westboro

Naomi L. Frazier, former Hamburg resident, died at the Pleasant View Rest Home in Rock Port [Missouri], Nov. 1. She was 80.
She is survived by her husband Fred of Westboro; two step daughters, Mrs. Jean Lytle of Hamburg and Mrs. Dorothy Giboney of Garland, Tex.; one sister, Mrs. Pearl Barnes of Oroville, Calif.; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Nov. at the Davis Funeral Home 1 Tarkio, conducted by the Rev. Kyle Hern. Interment was in Center Grove Cemetery, Westboro. [Nov 12, 1987]

Naomi L. Frazier, daughter of James and Melissa (Beason) Mackey, was born June 20,1907 in Atchison County, Missouri. She died Nov. 1, 1987, at the Pleasant View Rest Home in Rock Port, Mo., at the age of 80 years.

During her early years she attended High Creek Country School and later Hamburg High School.

She was united in marriage to Fred Frazier Feb. 6, 1971, in Hamburg. They made their home in Westboro.

She was a member of the Westboro United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Fred, of Westboro; 2 step-daughters, Mrs. Jean Lytle of Hamburg and Mrs. Dorothy Giboney of Garland, Texas; 1 sister, Mrs. Pearl Barnes, of Oroville, Calif.; and 23 nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 5 brothers.

Funeral services were held Nov. 3 at the Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio with the Rev. Kyle Kern officiating. Interment was in the Center Grove Cemetery, Westboro. [Nov 12, 1987]

Frede, Joseph Edward, the son of George and Naomi Dilla (Barnhart) Frede was born September 1, 1914 in Rock Port, Missouri. Joe attended the Golden View country school on the Frede family farm near Watson, Missouri, and later farmed with his parents and Uncle Ernest Moore.

On February 24, 1937, Joe was united in marriage to Margery Geneva Moore in Rock Port by Pastor Goeings. For several years they lived and farmed in the Watson, Red Star, Phelps City, Nishnabotna and Rock Port Missouri Communities. In 1959 they built their lovely home south of Rock Port where he lived to the present time. Marge passed away on June 26, 1999. Joe passed away Sunday, November 19, 2006 at a Redwood City, California hospital at the age of 92 years.

Joe was an excellent farmer, farm manager and investor. He always took great pride in his farming work, and the community and his family admired his accomplishments. As he approached retirement, he would always say, "I really can't imagine not farming, but I will always be proud of my 70 plus crop years." He would tell Marge, "the secret of our success is, it takes two to make a go of it, you milk the cows, and I'll plant the corn." Joe and Marge were members and long time supporters of the High Creek Baptist Church. Margery's great-grandfather, Dr. H. P. Moore, was one of the founding fathers of the High Creek Church and Cemetery. Joe was also a member of the Rock Port Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald G. Frede and his wife, Merrily, Woodside, California, and James R. Frede and his wife Donna, Vinton, Iowa; five grandchildren, Bethany A. (Frede) Bajorek, Cool, California, Stephany Frede and Jason Frede, both of Woodside, Ryan Frede, Iowa City, Iowa and Carrie Frede, Elon, North Carolina; four great-grandchildren, Avery, Noah, Cole and Samantha.

Besides his parents and wife Margery, Joe was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil and Jewell Frede.

Funeral Services were held, Tuesday, November 28, 2006, 11:00 am, High Creek Baptist Church, Watson, Missouri, with burial at High Creek Cemetery, Watson.

Freeman, Inace Riley, the daughter of Howard and Gertrude (Hicks) Riley, was born December 13, 1927 in rural Fairfax, Missouri. She attended Bellevue and Irish Grove Schools in rural Atchison and Holt Counties, graduating from Tarkio Missouri High School, in 1946. Inace was employed in numerous restaurants in Tarkio, until owning and operating the Squeeze Inn Restaurant.

On January 31, 1953 Inace was united in marriage to Charles Maynard Freeman in Harrison, Arkansas. They made their home in Tarkio where she was a homemaker, raising their five children, Cheryl Elaine, Tammy Sue, Mary Jane, Connie Lou and James Douglas. Maynard passed away in March of 1988.

Inace was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Tarkio, where she taught Sunday school for forty plus years, and served in the Women’s Ministry. She was a member and District Chaplain of the Tarkio Garden Club, and the Young at Heart Club. She was the current President of the Tarkio Municipal Water Board, former member of the Tarkio City Council, the Regional Government of Northwest Missouri and the Homer Extension Club, Tarkio.

Inace loved her family, her church, and spending time with her many friends. She enjoyed baking (cooking), “Hat Shows” and sporting events. More recently she was a supporter of the Relay for Life, cancer walk, attending the last relay in September. Inace passed away Thursday, October 11, 2007, at Community Hospital, Fairfax, at the age of 79 years

Besides her parents and husband, Inace was preceded in death by one daughter, Tammy Sue; sisters, Nadine Hunkins and Annas Riley, brothers, Willis Riley and Charles “Bucky” Riley. Survivors include three daughters Cheryl Elaine and Mary Jane Freeman, Tarkio, Connie Lou Burk and her husband Max, Kansas City, Missouri, one son, James Douglas Freeman, Republic, Missouri; two sisters, Ann Phroper and Helen Henson, both of Tarkio; three brothers, Edmond Riley, Carl Riley and his wife Carolyn, all of Tarkio, and Jimmie Riley and his wife Lorraine, Republic, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Jean Stevens, Tarkio, Evaline Riley, Fairfax, and Virginia Riley, Holden, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews

Freeman, Martha Elizabeth, the daughter of James Riley and Mollie Beldon (Cox) Freeman, was born January 12, 1900 in Dearborn, Missouri. She attended Sherwood rural school in Dearborn, Missouri, where she graduated from the eighth grade with honors. For a time, Elizabeth worked in St. Joseph, Missouri at the Home of the Little Wanderers on Noyes Boulevard.

In 1927, she moved with her family from Faucett, Missouri to Atchison County, Missouri, where her father and brothers helped farm 720 acres of the J.C. Culbertson land northeast of Tarkio. They moved by railroad all of their furniture and equipment, along with cattle, mules and horses. In 1943, Elizabeth moved into Tarkio with her family when her father retired from farming. In 1947, Elizabeth enjoyed celebrating with her parents their 50th wedding anniversary. Her parents passed away in 1952.

After moving into town, Elizabeth worked at Clardy’s Department Store and The Golden Rule store. For many years, she worked for prominent families in Tarkio caring for their children, and was a nanny for the Everett Strautman family.

Elizabeth was a charter member and past secretary of the Center-View Extension Club, which was organized in 1932. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tarkio and served as Director and Secretary of the Adult Department of her Sunday School. Elizabeth taught Sunday School for 30 years and had perfect attendance from 1955 until 2003. In July of 2003, due to ill health, Elizabeth became a resident of Northview Manor Nursing Home, in Tarkio, where she passed away on September 23, 2007, at the age of 107 years. Elizabeth enjoyed reading and crocheting. She was a remarkable woman who loved and was loved by all who knew her.

Elizabeth is survived by one sister, Dorthine Woolsey, Tarkio, and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by four brothers, Charles L. Freeman, Raymond L. Freeman, George T. Freeman and James O. Freeman; and three sisters, Mary A. Smith, Helen Adamson and Leona Smith.

Visitation: Open visitation any time after 9:00 am, Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at the Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio.
Services: Wednesday, September 26, 2007, 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Tarkio. Burial will follow at the Tarkio Home Cemetery, Tarkio.

Freeman, Venaeta Hurley, the daughter of John and Helen (Dunham) Hurley was born March 16, 1913 in Tarkio, Missouri. Venaeta attended Tarkio schools and graduated from Tarkio High School.

On October 16, 1932, Venaeta was united in marriage to George Thomas Freeman. They farmed east of Tarkio until 1936. They later lived and farmed in the Nodaway County, Blanchard, Iowa and Rock Port, Missouri communities. Following their retirement in 1974 they once again lived in Tarkio and then in Maryville, Missouri. In 1989, they moved back to Tarkio where she lived to the present time. George passed away in 2001. Venaeta passed away Saturday November 4, 2006 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, at the age of 93 years.
Venaeta was a member of the Tarkio Baptist Church.

Besides her parents and husband, George, Venaeta was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Marvin and Don Hurley, and three sisters, Lorene Thomas, Mabel Chambers and Evelyn Mather.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services were held Tuesday, November 7th, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio, with burial at Home Cemetery, Tarkio. There was no scheduled family visitation. Memorials may directed to the Home Cemetery.

Freemyer, JoAn Ruth Simmons - JoAn Ruth (Simmons) Freemyer, 59, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009, at the Nebraska Medical center in Omaha, Nebraska.

JoAn was born Jun 24, 1949, in Maryville, Missouri, to Lloyd and Norma Jean (Cobb) Simmons. JoAn's father died when she was two months old. Her mother later married Bill Baker, who helped raise her.

JoAn was raised in and attended school in Bedford, Iowa, until her senior year of high school, which she finished at Rock Port, Missouri.

On December 23, 1966, JoAn was united in marriage to D.C. Freemyer at Rev Day's home in Maryville. JoAn liked being around people. Her jobs included Pearce's Gift Shop, Hunter Grocery, Fairfax Hospital, University of Missouri Extension Office in Rock Port, and secretary at the Fairfax United Methodist Church where she was a member. JoAn was very active with her hobbies and enjoyed going to craft shows whenever she got the chance. She also enjoyed talking to her friends on the telephone and spent countless hours doing so.

The most preceious of JoAn's hobbies was spending time with her grandchildren. She was also an excellent seamstress and had made many alterations and costumes for the kids.

JoAn is survived by her hubsnad, D.C., of the home; two sons, Donovan and wife, Vici, Elk Grove, California, and Jared and wife, Jamie, of Fairfax; four grandchildren, Jentry, Kyle, Jagger and Dylan Freemyer; brother, Allen Simmons, Marshall, Missouri; and two stepbrothers, Bill Baker, Jr., Kansas City, Missouri, and Jim Baker, Ainsworth, Nebraska.

JoAn was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather; and by two brothers, Larry Simmons and Donald Dean Simmons.

Mrs. Anna Whelan, her daughter. Miss Bernice, and son Timothy, all drove to Rock Port on Saturday afternoon to attend the funeral of their cousin, Mrs. Rosa Frlerhofer. The deceased was a sister to Chas. ' Fischer, whose funeral was the' proceeding Saturday. They died of pneumonia. [Feb 18, 1937]

Fuller, Lorene Louise Anna, 71, of Shenandoah, formerly of Essex, died July 20, 2001, at the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah. She was born July 25, 1929, in Hubbell, Neb., to Henry Frank and Charlotte Louise (Scheiding) Fuller. She spent her early life in the Hubbell, Neb and Corning, Mo, areas. She attended grade school in the Corning Public Schools before attending high school in Rock Port, Mo where she graduated with the class of 1947. She later moved to Shenandoah and worked at the Tall Corn Motel. She eventually moved to Southview Village in Essex where she resided until entering Garden View Care Center in February.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Harvey Fuller and a brother-in-law, Lawrence Riley.

Survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman and Mary Fuller of Shenandoah; George and Betty Fuller of Mound City, Mo; one sister, Ella Riley of Essex; one sister-in-law, Josephine Fuller of Lathrope, Mo; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were July 23 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Shenandoah with the Rev Steven Teske officiating. Organist was Kris Adkins, Ushers were Roger Brink and Glen Confer. Casket bearers were Paul Riley, David Riley, Fary Fuller, Jerry Riley, Tim Fuller, Ray Fuller and Charles Kinney. Interment was in Pleasant Ridge Cemtery in Fairfax, Mo. Farley, Maudie M. Breazile - Maudie M. (Breazile) Farley, the daughter of Thomas William and Hada M. (Hogue) Breazile, was born August 7, 1931 in Tarkio, Missouri. She attended Tarkio public schools, graduating with the Tarkio High School class of 1949. After graduation, Maudie attended Kaster Beauty School in St. Joseph, Missouri where she earned a cosmetology diploma.

On July 26, 1953, Maudie was united in marriage to Harold Joseph (Midge) Farley in St. Joseph, where the couple resided until 1958. Maudie was baptized and confirmed into the First Evangelical and Reformed Church of St. Joseph in 1957. They returned to Tarkio, where they raised their family and lived the remainder of their married life. Maudie and Midge would share 50 years of marriage. Midge passed away in 2003. Maudie passed away Monday, February 15, 2010 at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Missouri at the age of 78 years.

Maudie worked as a beautician in her home, and maintained her license to the present time. She was also a Certified Medical Technician and worked for many years at the nursing homes in both Tarkio and Rock Port, Missouri. She was employed for a short time at Manley Popcorn in Tarkio.

Maudie coached the Special Olympics in bowling, track and basketball. She was a former member of the Sweet Adelines and served as a Den Leader for the local Cub Scout Pack. Her greatest enjoyment came from her children, grandchildren and great grandchild.

Besides her parents, Maudie was preceded in death by her husband, Midge; two sisters, Betty Hunley and Viola Leek; and a brother, Jack Breazile. She is survived by five children, Farliegh Joe Farley and his wife, Carol, Woodbine, Iowa, Cheryl Volker and her husband, Bud, Tarkio, Barney Farley and his wife, Marty, Tarkio, Janet Morton and her husband, Cal, Fairfax, Missouri and Mary Kay Ryan and her husband, David, Tarkio; grandchildren, Brice and Briana Farley, Cathy and Wyatt Farley, Denton Joseph (DJ) and Dillon Martin, Crystal Beck and Kamron Woodring, Jacob and Katie Beck and Amanda Morton; great grandchild, Payton Woodring; nieces and nephews.

Fischer, Paulyne - Paulyne Fischer, the daughter of Hubert Martin and Bess (Hartman) Fischer was born in her home in Watson, Missouri on March 17, 1935. She attended schools in the Watson community. Paulyne helped several families when an extra compassionate, kind hand was needed. She then resided in Omaha, Nebraska and was employed by St. Joseph Hospital. She nursed children living in iron lungs. When the polio epidemic ended, Paulyne transferred to neonatal special care nursery and for nearly forty years provided care for countless infants in this role. After retirement, Paulyne helped other families with children with special needs in their home. She passed away March 7, 2010 at the age of 74 years at the Hospice House of Omaha, Nebraska.
Paulyne cherished her Tregaron and Church families in Bellevue, Nebraska.
Paulyne was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by one brother, Bob Fischer and his wife, Nancy, Watson; one sister, Sharee Ross and her husband, Ken, Hiawatha, Kansas; nephews and nieces; Zel and Julie Fischer, Kenzie and Ben Hurst, Zachary, Madison and Courtney Fischer, Jay, Becky and John Wohlers, Isaac, Josie and Caylee Grace Wohlers, Valorie, Russ, Jake and Clay Hedges, Stacy, Russ, Kimberly and Megan Potter.

Flanagan, Maurice Anthony - Maurice Anthony Flanagan, the son of McDonald and Nancy Sue (Choate) Flanagan, was born September 18, 1927 in Fairfax, Missouri. Maurice attended country school in the Fairfax, Missouri area and graduated from high school in Clearmont, Missouri.
On October 8, 1945, Maurice entered the United States Army and served his country overseas at the end of World War II and during the Korean War, receiving his honorable discharge on February 15, 1955.
In 1954, Maurice was united in marriage to Evelyn Blackford. They became the parents of three children. They were later divorced. In August 1964, Maurice was united in marriage to Margaret Rassmuson. They became the parents of one child. They were later divorced. On July 12, 1972, Maurice was united in marriage to Rosalee (Slemp) Ottmann. They made their home in Arizona, New Mexico and in 1994 they moved to Rock Port to retire, where they lived to the present time. Maurice passed away Thursday, July 2, 2009 at Beatrice Community Hospital, Beatrice, Nebraska, at the age of 81 years.
Maurice worked heavy construction, building bridges and schools in the Seattle, Washington area. After moving to Arizona in 1979, he continued working in heavy construction, as well as in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he retired in 1994. Maurice was known for his large garden, and he enjoyed sharing his harvest with everyone in the community. Maurice was a member of the Ralph Greer American Legion Post #199, Rock Port, as well as being a former member of several construction labor unions.
Besides his parents, Maurice was preceded in death by five sisters, Nita Marie Martindale, Juanita Cohen, Lione New, Mabel Flanagan and Betty Lou Sly; three brothers, Floyd Flanagan, Mac Flanagan and James Flanagan.
Maurice is survived by his wife, Rosalee, of their home in Rock Port; two sons, Steven Flanagan, Renton, Washington and Gregg Flanagan and his wife, Desire, Albuquerque; two daughters, Kelly Welles and her husband, James, Albuquerque, and Shawna Osterbuhr, Enumclaw, Washington; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one sister, Iona Dott (Flanagan) Lawrence, Rock Port; two brothers, John Flanagan, Kansas City, Missouri and Richard Flanagan, Maryville, Missouri.
