Barnes, Carol Adele
Meyer -
Carol Adele Barnes, 88, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care in Tarkio, Missouri. She was born on July 11, 1931 at the family farm house in rural Northboro, Iowa to Fred and Lucille (Emery) Meyer.
Although Carol grew up in Northboro, she graduated from Westboro High School, Westboro, Missouri in 1949. Carol was the homecoming queen during her junior year in 1947.
Carol married Kenneth Dwain Barnes in 1953 at Locust Grove Methodist Church near Shenandoah, Iowa. As newlyweds, they lived in Laguna Beach, California, while Kenneth served his country during the Korean War. They were happily married for 63 years.
Upon her husband being discharged in 1954, Kenneth and Carol returned to Westboro to start farming and begin their family. They began farming the Lester Ebert farm in the North Star district, later moving to the Olin Barnes farm between Westboro and Elmo, Missouri. In 1970, Kenneth and Carol built a home in the Westboro area where she lived to the present time.
Carol was a member of Westboro United Methodist Church and was very involved with the women’s church activities. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing clothes. Her favorite memories were her times with her husband in Hawaii, California and Washington State, where they explored nature. Most of all, she and Kenneth enjoyed having any and all of their eleven grandchildren to their home for various adventures and festivities. Whatever the occasion, the grandchildren loved special treats prepared by Grandma: her famous “Coke” float, Black cow, homemade milkshake, cookies, and sugar pies. Every Christmas (our Barnes tradition), she read Bible stories to her kids and grandchildren. This tradition will carry on forever. She will be missed! Carol was the “ROCK” of the family; her presence meant “home”. Her witty sense of humor brought laughter to everyone. She enjoyed life at every stage. She always brought us together and led the group during all holidays.
Besides her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth in 2015, an infant son, Curtis W. Barnes in 1954, sister, Laurel Craven, brother-in-law, Maurice Sharp. Dave loved living in the country outside of Fairfax. If someone asked he always said he was born and raised in the area. He loved living on “the hill” and he truly enjoyed mowing his lawn. Dave loved his family and his dogs.
Dave was an accomplished welder by trade and worked in Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska retiring in 2015. Dave also worked for many of the farmers in the area and liked to consider himself a “farmer”. Dave enjoyed going to auctions and collecting “precious treasures”. Remember, “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.” His collections of treasures included shelves of vinyl records, Marilyn Monroe memorabilia and many, many antiques and vintage tools. He loved his music and he liked it loud. He enjoyed restoring vintage vehicles and two of his cars went to Paul Revere and the Raiders.
It was Dave’s request to not have a “funeral”. Instead he would like all those who knew and cared about him to celebrate life. Have a party, make it fun and think about a wonderful, crazy, old man that didn’t know a stranger. A man who made friends everywhere he went. A man that will never be forgotten even if you only met him once.

Vette, Wilma Katherine Broermann -
Wilma Katherine Vette the daughter of Charles W. and Cora (Vette) Broermann was born November 3, 1922 on the family farm outside of Westboro, Missouri. Wilma attended the North Polk country school and graduated in 1941 from high school in Rock Port, Missouri.
Wilma considered attending nursing school, but decided to stay home and farm with her father while her brothers, Harry and Donald went to college. She took pride in her ability to “outpick” them both while harvesting corn by hand.
On February 2, 1947, Wilma and Ralph Vette eloped to Bendena, Kansas to get married. Their witnesses were Maggie and Willis Kemper. They had no children but were survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Wilma and Ralph farmed the land they purchased from her dad Charles, which lay 2 miles from St. John’s Lutheran Church. She lived her entire life within sight of St. John’s, until entering Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care in January 2015. She also loved to reminisce about the good old days of “shucking corn” and milking, by hand, eight Guernsey cows morning and night. She and Ralph were caretakers of St. John’s Cemetery for many years. She also sang in the choir her entire life.
Although naturally quiet and reserved, she was always eager to take part in St. John’s crazy skits. From a disguise in the Centennial Beard growing contest, to her “whitey tightys” in a parody of Bryan Ebert’s career as an underwear model. She was “married” to Donnie Laumann, as Johnny Cash, more times than June Carter.
She loved all animals, even the Skunk that lived in her cellar, but especially her dog Lollipop who was with her for 16 years…lucky dog!! She will be missed, but never forgotten. Wilma passed away Monday, January 20, 2020 at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care at the age of 97.
Besides her parents Wilma was preceded in death by husband Ralph of 43 years and her brothers, Harry and Donald.
