Archambault, Ronald Felix - Ronald Felix Archambault, the son of Louis Charles and Isabelle (Visina) Archambault, was born April 29, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended school in the Chicago area. On February 12, 1962, Ron entered the United States Army and proudly served his country. He received his honorable discharge on February 11, 1966. 

On February 10, 2006, Ron was united in marriage to Cathi Redfern in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. 

Following Ron’s discharge from the military, he was employed as a long haul truck driver, where he was known as “Archy.” After his retirement, Ron owned and operated a small engine repair business in Miller, Missouri. 

Ron enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, riding motorcycles and fishing, especially at Stockton Lake. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and his two canine companions, Ladybug and Gidget. Ron passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 81. 

Ron was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include wife, Cathi Redfern-Archambault, Tarkio; daughters, Shannon Ratliff and husband, Dean, Stockton, DeDee Updike and husband, Patrick, Red Oak, Iowa, and Bobbi Poppa and husband, Scott, Tarkio; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; brother, Louis Archambault and wife, Sunny, Greenbay, Wisconsin; sisters, Doris Peterson and husband, Harold, Huntsville, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Graveside Memorial Services and Inurnment are planned for the fall of 2018 at Home Cemetery, Tarkio.

Armstrong, Gary Wayne - Gary Wayne Armstrong, the son of John F. and Vera Mae (Thompson) Armstrong, was born May 20, 1943, in Watson, Missouri. More affectionately known as “Choc,” he attended Watson High School, graduating in 1961. 

Choc was employed by Stanton Grain in Watson and the Hamburg COOP, before being drafted into the United States Army in 1965. He was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War and proudly served his country for two years. He received his honorable discharge February 21, 1967. Choc then returned to Missouri and was employed by Harold (Bud) Martin for 37 years, retiring in 2005. 

Choc was a member of the Watson Baptist Church, Watson Volunteer Fire Department and served as chairman of the town of Watson Board of Trustees. Choc passed away Thursday, April 26, 2018, at the VA Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 74. 

In addition to his parents, Choc was preceded in death by four brothers, Gerald and Kenneth Armstrong, John Armstrong, Jr. and Leo Armstrong. Survivors include brother, Jim Armstrong and wife, Barbara, Hamburg; two sisters, Lylith Gardner, Omaha, and Hollis Holmes and husband, Chris, Watson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Armstrong, Leo D. - Leo D. Armstrong, the son of John F. and Vera Mae (Thompson) Armstrong, was born October 2, 1945, in Watson, Missouri. He attended Watson High School, graduating in 1963.

In March of 1964, Leo was united in marriage to Linda Webster. They became the parents of one daughter, Julie, and made their home in St. Louis, Missouri, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Independence, Missouri, Watson, Missouri, and in Rock Port, Missouri, where he lived to the present time. While living in Independence, Leo was a welder and worked in numerous industries. After moving back to Rock Port, Missouri, Leo was employed at Auburn Consolidated Industries in Auburn, Nebraska. 

Leo was a member of the Watson Baptist Church. Linda passed away October 21, 2016. Leo passed away Thursday, April 19, 2018, at an Omaha, Nebraska, hospital at the age of 72.

Lois Evelyn Bennington, the daughter of Charles Sr. and Juanita (Million) Herron was born January 27, 1924, in Watson, Missouri.  Lois attended grade school at North Polk country school and graduated from Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri, in 1941. 

On June 6, 1943, Lois was united in marriage to Conley M. Bennington, Jr. in Tarkio, Missouri.  She and Conley operated the Farmers City Store near Westboro, Missouri.  In 1947, they began farming in Atchison County.  In 1955, they moved to Holt County, and continued farming.  In 1967, they returned to Rock Port where they owned and operated Bennington Chevrolet-Buick until retiring in 1979.  They spent their retirement years during the winter in Yuma, Arizona. 

Lois was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port, Garden Club and the Ralph Greer American Legion Auxiliary Unit #49, Rock Port.  She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, and embroidery, but her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her family.  Lois passed away Monday, October 15, 2018, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 94.

Boettner, Deana M. Moore - Deana M. Boettner the daughter of Oscar L., Sr. and Ruth (Adams) Moore was born January 23, 1924 in Watson, Missouri. She attended Highland country school north of Rock Port, Missouri, and graduated from Rock Port High School in 1941. 

On July 12, 1942, Deana was united in marriage to John H. (J.H.) Boettner in the Wilshire Wedding Chapel in Los Angeles, California and they became the parents of two sons, Jay and Steven. They began their life together in California and then lived in various other places around the country while J.H. served in World War II. They moved to Atchison County after his discharge. In 1948 they moved to the family farm north of Rock Port and began farming. Deana and J.H. enjoyed 70 years together before his death in 2012. Deana passed away Friday, February 2, 2018 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port at the age of 94. 

Deana was an active member of the Rock Port Baptist Church where she served in many capacities. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter DU, Rock Port. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of various bridge clubs. Most important to Deana was spending time with her family and friends. She was loved by them all. 

Besides her parents and husband, Deana was preceded in death by brothers, Byron, Donald, Ralph and Oscar L. Moore, Jr., and sisters, Doris Brown and Helen Beasing. Peggy Marie Wright Bonar, the daughter of Merrill James and Edna May (Tudor) Wright, was born March 10, 1939, in Maryville, Missouri.  She attended Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri, graduating in 1957.  Peggy attended Central College in Fayette, Missouri, University of Guanajuato, Mexico, the University of Nevada, Reno, and Northwest Missouri State University. She held a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Bachelor of Science in Education (cum laude). 

On September 18, 1960, Peggy was united in marriage to Robert Allen Bonar in Reno. They moved to Ukiah, California in 1971, and returned to Rock Port in 1986, where Peggy lived to the present time.  Robert passed away November 24, 1996. 

Peggy was employed as a legal secretary for the Law Office of Zel Fischer, retiring in 2008.  During her lifetime, she was a piano teacher, Spanish teacher, bookkeeper, accountant, and worked in tax preparation. 

Peggy was an active member in many organizations, including Kingsley Chapter #58 and Fairfax Chapter #373 of the Order of Eastern Star, P.E.O. Chapter DU of Rock Port, and Rock Port Sorosis.  She served as financial secretary and on the board for C.A.R.E. of Atchison County.  Peggy had a very special and endearing relationship with her grandson, Cyrus.  She also loved to travel, taking many trips to Europe and visiting family abroad.  Peggy enjoyed teaching, reading and playing the piano. She was a very kind and caring person who fostered many friendships throughout her lifetime and she will be dearly missed.  Peggy passed away Thursday, September 13, 2018, at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 79. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband.  She is survived by her two daughters, Christine Brooke Salidivar and husband, John Earle Roberts, of Guanajuato, Mexico, and Melinda May Bonar Tignor and husband, Martel Edward Tignor; grandson, Cyrus Robert Perry Tignor, all of Bremen, Germany; cousins, Lola (Dennis) Davis, Rock Port, Keith (Carol) Harmon, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Robert (Carolyn) Harmon, Sidney, Iowa; and many beloved friends.

Helen R. Bowen, the daughter of Ruford and Nellie (Hall) Kuhns, was born November 10, 1924, in Hamburg, Iowa.  She attended schools in Thurman and Hamburg, Iowa. 

On May 20, 1942, Helen was united in marriage to William Richard (Dick) Bowen in Maryville, Missouri.  They became the parents of three sons, Gary, Mike and Rick.  The family moved up and down the Missouri River due to Dick’s employment, including Council Bluffs, Iowa, Corning, Missouri, Nishnabotna, Missouri, Decatur, Nebraska, Blair, Nebraska, Rock Port, Missouri, and Nebraska City, Nebraska. 

Helen was employed as a laundry supervisor at a nursing home and managed a laundromat in Blair.  She was also a stay-at-home mom, raising and caring for her three sons.  Dick passed away January 3, 2003. 

Helen was a faithful member of the Rock Port Baptist Church.  She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, bird watching and tending to her flowers.  For the last five years, Helen was a resident of Carter Place in Blair, where she was honored as Queen on Valentine’s Day.  Helen passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at Carter Place at the age of 93. 

In addition to her parents and husband Dick, Helen was preceded in death by son, Rick Bowen, two grandsons, Rick Bowen and Rich Livengood, sister, Hazel Campbell, brothers, Bobby and David Kuhns, and brother-in-law, Marvin Walker.  Survivors include two sons, Gary Bowen and wife, Donna, Carson, Iowa, and Mike Bowen and wife, Linda, Blair; grandchildren, Matthew (Jennifer), John (Lisa), Amy (Brian), Corby, and Annette (Ross); granddaughter-in-law, Heather Livengood; great-grandchildren, Kacie (Ryan), Daniel, Myla, Blake, Drayk, Jossilyn, Hailey and Everly; great-great-grandchildren, Bowen, Laila, and Ava; brother, Lonnie (Becky) Kuhns, Rock Port; sister, Cathy Walker, Jefferson City, Missouri; many nieces and nephews.

Bradley, Dorothy Jean (----) Cooper - Dorothy Jean Bradley, age 94 of Auburn (formerly Rock Port, MO), passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Society in Auburn.

Robert L. Burson, the son of Denton Robert Orlando and Leota Pearl (Liter) Burson, was born September 6, 1932, on the farm in Mills County, Iowa, near Strahan, Iowa.  He attended Wales Country School in Iowa, and Bell Grove School in Nodaway County, Missouri. 

On April 11, 1952, Robert was united in marriage to Julia Ann Richey in Bedford, Iowa.  They moved to California where he worked for the General Tire and Rubber Company for a period of time before returning to the Midwest. 

On February 11, 1955, Robert entered the United States Army and served his country until honorably discharged on February 7, 1957.  Robert farmed in Northwest Missouri for many years, milked dairy cows, and raised hogs and row crops along with working for Lloyd Chain in Maryville, Missouri.  Robert and Julie moved back to Hopkins, Missouri, where he owned and operated a small engine repair shop for many years.  Along with running the shop, he and Julie hand raised birds of all types that they sold to pet shops. Julie passed away March 15, 2002. 

Robert loved the time he spent with his extended family and enjoyed visiting with friends in his shop and around town. He was a Christian and was affiliated with the Wray Memorial United Methodist Church in Hopkins.  Robert passed away Sunday, August 19, 2018, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 85. 

In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, Julie, Robert was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty M. Martin and Pearl L Klassy and brothers, Orlando and Earl L. Burson.  Survivors include son, Charles R. Burson; sisters-in law, Coleen Burson, Ephrata, Washington, and Clara Burson, Maryville, Missouri; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and his caregivers while living in Tarkio, Crystal Dooley and Susan Driskell.

Bussard, Betty Ruth Johnson - Betty Ruth Bussard, the daughter of Merrill Alvin and Catherine Ruth (Grimmett) Johnson was born September 13, 1942, in Maryville, Missouri. She attended West Nodaway High School in Burlington Junction, Missouri where she graduated in 1960. Betty then attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, graduating with a B.S. degree in Business Education in 1964. 

Betty started riding horses at the age of three on her family’s farm, the Circle J Ranch. She was a seasoned enough rider at seven years old to participate in a 120 mile trail ride in Red Oak, Iowa. Betty showed quarter horses in 4-H and competed in barrel racing, pole bending, and cutting horse contests in high school rodeo. Betty was known as the “All Around Cowgirl” and in 1957, was formally awarded this title in high school which she retained for three years. Betty earned the reign of the Missouri State Champion High School Rodeo Queen spanning the years of 1958 and 1959. She was also crowned the Tri-State World Championship Rodeo Queen (Fort Madison, IA) and the coveted National High School Rodeo Queen (Lewiston, MT) in 1959. Later, she was also named the Aksarben Rodeo Queen (Omaha, NE). A special memory of Betty’s high school years was riding in the Madison Square Garden’s parade. In college contests where riders were judged on horsemanship, Betty was honored to be awarded “Miss Rodeo Missouri” which gave her the opportunity to compete in “Miss Rodeo America” (Las Vegas, NV). 

On May 31, 1964, Betty was united in marriage to Gary David Bussard. They made their home in Tarkio, Missouri, and became the parents of two sons, David Keith, 1966, and Michael John, 1968. She devoted her life to her family and friends and was known for her loving and giving heart. Her cowbell could always be heard at her sons’ sporting events. 

Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tarkio. She was very involved with the Tarkio Rodeo, Rough Riders and Trick Riding. Betty was a member of Daughters of the Revolution (DAR) and was the past president of PEO Chapter FF of Tarkio. Betty lived by the “Golden Rule” and enjoyed playing cards, bridge and other games with friends and family. Betty would always send a card or a note just at the right time to encourage, support, and cheer on her family and friends. Betty passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port, Missouri, at the age of 75. 

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by Phyllis Buhr George, who was like a sister. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Gary David Bussard of Tarkio, their oldest son, David Keith Bussard (his wife, Michelle Renee, and their children, Joshua David, and Caitlin McKenzie) of Minot, North Dakota, and their youngest son, Michael John Bussard (his wife, Lisa Jo, and their children, Morgan Elizabeth and Andrew John) of Brentwood, Tennessee. Additional survivors include sister, Carol Catherine Ecker of Gladstone, Missouri, along with nieces and nephews, Jacqueline Marie, Justin Martin, Jonathan Merrill, and Jennifer Michelle. Other special family members to note are Dale Clement, who was like a brother, and his wife, Barbara, and their children, Crystal Rimza and James Clement, along with cousins, Steve George and wife, Mary, and their son, Ty George and his wife, Sandi.

James E. (Jim) Chambers, the son of John and Bertha (Wheat) Chambers, was born August 9, 1933, in Tarkio, Missouri.  He attended high school in Burlington Junction, Missouri, and Watson High School, Watson, Missouri, graduating in 1951. 

On June 17, 1966, Jim was united in marriage to Mary Louise Shockey in Gladstone, Missouri.  They made their home in Kansas City, Kansas, until moving to Tarkio, where Jim lived to the present time.  Mary Lou passed away November 8, 2002. 

Jim was a plant manager at the International Paper Company in Kansas City, Kansas, retiring in the 1990’s. 

Jim was a member of the Fairfax Masonic Lodge #483, A.F. and A.M., Fairfax, Missouri.  Jim passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at Bryan LGH East Hospital, Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 85. 

In addition to his parents and wife, Jim was preceded in death by brothers, Ova, Erna, Curtis and John Chambers, sisters, Beulah Carter, Ella Faye Austin, Marjorie Owen and Imogene Mather, and two infant siblings.  Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews; and many close friends in the Tarkio area.

Clark, Philip R. - Philip R. Clark, the son of Ray L. and Mabel (Sloane) Clark, was born October 27, 1931, in rural Tarkio, Missouri. Phil attended South York Country School through the eighth grade and Tarkio High School, graduating in 1949. After graduating, Phil worked on the family farm and for local surrounding neighbors on their farms. 

In 1951, Phil married Dixie Ottmann and they became the parents of three children, Karla Rae, Wanda Jean, and Roger Duane. They were later divorced. Phil worked at the local John Deere dealership in Tarkio until it closed and at the Excel Beef Plant. On June 21, 1974, Phil married Roberta Noland Merriett and they became the parents of one son, Tim. 

Phil enjoyed fishing, farming, and any machinery work. He continued to work spring and fall harvest until his retirement. Phil’s greatest enjoyment was his family. He was a member of the Tarkio Baptist Church, Tarkio Lions Club and Tarkio Rodeo Board. Phil passed away Friday, May 18, 2018, at his home in Tarkio at the age of 86 surrounded by his family. 

In addition to his parents, Phil was preceded in death by brothers, Kim Clark, and Kent Clark, and sisters, Shirley Carlisle and Margie Clark. Craven, Phyllis Evelyn Martin - Phyllis Evelyn (Martin) Craven, daughter of Charles Beck and Ivah Leah (Baker) Martin, was born January 15, 1924, near Rock Port, Missouri. She passed away Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care, Tarkio, Missouri, at the age of 94.

A lifelong resident of Atchison County, Phyllis grew up in the rural areas of Rock Port and Tarkio, attending Linden School, north of Rock Port and Tarkio High School.

On February 20, 1946, Phyllis was united in marriage to James Edward Craven in Troy, Kansas. They operated farms in the Westboro, Missouri area until retiring in 1978 to Tarkio.

Phyllis was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker; she especially enjoyed cooking, baking, preserving food from her large garden, growing flowers and welcoming family and friends into their home. At various times she also worked at Interstate Nurseries in Hamburg, Iowa; owned and operated the Village Café in Westboro and was employed at Casey’s in Tarkio.

She was a member of the Westboro Methodist Church, then the Tarkio Methodist Church, serving each in many capacities. Phyllis was also a past volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Phyllis is survived by two daughters, Nancy (John) Hubbell, Greenville, Illinois, and Linda (Keith) Brown, Denver, Colorado; two grandchildren, Audra Hubbell (Ted Werenski), St. Louis, Missouri, and Alexander Brown, Denver; great-grandson, Reece Werenski, St. Louis; brother, James Martin, Urbandale, Iowa; many nieces, nephews and beloved in-laws; and many friends.

Besides her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, James, and six brothers, Clifton, Willis, Duane, Dean, Glenn and Ray Martin.

Memorial Service: 12:00 P.M., (Noon), Saturday, June 23, 2018, United Methodist Church, Tarkio.

Fentiman, Helen M. Long - Helen M. Fentiman, the daughter of Guy Andrew and Georgia Era (VanDyke) Long, was born August 9, 1922, in Gallatin, Missouri. She attended Gallatin Elementary School and Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri, graduating in 1940. 

On June 14, 1941, Helen was united in marriage to Dwane Clifton Fentiman at the Tarkio Methodist Church parsonage. They made their home in Maryville, Missouri, until Dwane was called to military service. Helen then moved to Parsons, Kansas, to work at an ammunition plant. 

Upon Dwane’s return from the service, they moved to Rock Port, Missouri, and Helen was employed at George Simons. They became the parents of two children, Richard and James, and Helen stayed at home to raise and care for her two children. In 1953, they moved to Kansas City, Missouri. In 1962, they moved back to Rock Port, where Helen was employed by Dr. Wanamaker’s office as a receptionist and bookkeeper for 13 years. Dwane and Helen owned and operated the bowling alley in Rock Port. Dwane passed away in 1994 and Helen continued to operate the business until 2000, when a broken ankle forced her retirement. 

Helen was a former member of the Continental Club and the Rock Port Chapter #440, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a 70 year member of the Ralph Greer American Legion Auxiliary Unit #49. Helen passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, at the age of 95. 

In addition to her parents and husband, Dwane, Helen was preceded in death by son, James Fentiman, infant brother, Max Jewell, brother, Dean Long and sisters, Nancy Poppa and Beverly Hubbard. Survivors include son, Richard Fentiman and wife, Suzanne, Rock Port; grandson, Barry Fentiman and wife, Sarah, Olathe, Kansas; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Hunter and Dylan Fentiman; and brother, Earnest Long, Harlingen, Texas.

Hamilton, Charles C. - Charles C. Hamilton, the son of Cecil Aubrey and Lula Geraldine (Black) Hamilton, was born December 5, 1935, in Tarkio, Missouri. He attended the Homer country school and Tarkio High School. 

On September 4, 1954, Charles was united in marriage to Elaine Edwards and they became the parents of Teresa and Debbie. They later divorced. On December 10, 1981, Charles was united in marriage to Edith M. Curry. They made their home in Kimberling City, Missouri, and moved to Tarkio in 2001. Edith passed away in 2015. Charles passed away Sunday, January 21, 2018, at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care at the age of 82. 

Charles farmed in the Elmo, Missouri area. He later owned and operated his own construction business. He was a former member of the Elmo Methodist Church and Lions Club. 

Besides his parents, and wife, Edith, Charles was preceded in death by stepson, Brian Curry, brother, Roy Hamilton and sister, Dayle Murdock. Survivors include daughters, Teresa (Phil) Walker, Brownville, Nebraska, and Debra Hamilton, Clarinda, Iowa; grandchildren, Ben (Ashley) Greeley, Maryville, Missouri, and Beth Wennihan, Burlington Junction, Missouri; step-grandchildren, Kate Curry, Rock Port, Missouri, and Jordan Masonbrink, Tarkio; great-grandchildren, Carter Wennihan and Layla Greeley; step-great- grandchildren, Zoe Madron, Avery Schomburg and Grayson Masonbrink; brothers, John Hamilton, Gilbert, Arizona, and Harry Hamilton, Rock Port; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Harmon, Ronnie Kurt - Ronnie Kurt Harmon, the son of Royal William and Opal Marie (Tudor) Harmon, was born November 17, 1959, in Nebraska City, Nebraska. He attended Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri, graduating in 1978.

Following graduation, Ronnie worked in numerous area jobs, then moved to California in 1983, where he excelled and was promoted to manager of a Goodyear Tire Dealership in Santa Ana. In 1988, he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he managed a Rapid Lube business and in 1989, Ronnie returned to the Midwest. On April 30, 1994, he was united in marriage to Jolene Lewis. They later divorced, but Ronnie maintained a close relationship with Jason, Cassie and Jayme.

In 1999, he purchased NAPA Auto Parts in Rock Port, which he owned and operated to the present time. Ronnie was a tender hearted man. His passing will leave a void in the lives of many of his close friends.

Ronnie was proud to be a member of the Patriot Guard and participated in processions. He was also a member and former President of the Rock Port Lions Club and Heartland Riders, an evangelical Christian motorcycle organization. Ronnie passed away Sunday, March 11, 2018, at his home in Rock Port at the age of 58.

Ronnie especially enjoyed the peace and solitude of watching the sunrise and sharing that time with his LORD. He gave his heart and soul to Him on February 19, 2007.

Ronnie loved life in general, he loved people and helping anyone he could. He never knew a stranger and shared his sense of humor wherever he went. His greatest joy was riding his Harley alone or with his many fellow riders, friends, and of course especially with WAKO.

In addition to his parents, Ronnie was preceded in death by infant siblings, Beverly Ann and Phillip Harold Harmon and nephew, Phillip Keith Harmon. Survivors include brothers, Royal Keith Harmon and wife, Carol, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Robert Harmon and wife, Carolyn, Sidney, Iowa; sister, Lola Marie Davis and husband, Dennis, Rock Port; nieces and nephews, Christy Jean Harmon, Meredith (Bud) Walter, Olivia (Thomas) Polliard, Brigitte (Tim) Sheridan, and Brock (Jennifer) Davis; great nieces, nephews, numerous cousins, many, many friends; and extended family, Jason (Veronica) Lewis, Cassie (Trevor) Hale and Jayme (Brent Meyer) Andrus.

Hughes, Thomas Paul "Tom" - Thomas Paul Edward (Tom) Hughes, Sr., the son of Wilbur and Grace (Moore) Hughes, was born December 10, 1939, in Fairfax, Missouri. Tom attended Star country school in Holt County. In 1957, Tom entered the United States Army and proudly served his country. 

In 1959, Tom was united in marriage to Judy Jackson. They became the parents of two children, Dana and Thomas Paul Edward Hughes, Jr. They later divorced. In 1972, Tom was united in marriage to Joyce Shandy. Tom helped raise Joyce’s two daughters, Ria and Laura. They later divorced. In 2014, Tom was united in marriage to Bonnie Hughes and they made their home in Rock Port, Missouri, to the present time. 

Tom was employed as an over-the-road truck driver for Keim Trucking, Sabetha, Kansas. In 1980, Tom owned and operated Tom’s Truck & Auto Repair in Rock Port. He also worked for Marvin Leseberg on the farm and managed an apartment complex in Desert Palms, California. Tom passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at his home in Rock Port. 

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by sister, Josephine Keever. Survivors include wife, Bonnie Hughes, Rock Port; daughter, Dana Thompson and husband, James; son, Paul Hughes, Jr., all of Rock Port; stepdaughters, Ria Kimmes and husband, Michael, Grass Valley, California, Laura Harris and husband, Mark, Palm Springs, California; five grandchildren, Jayme (Justin Sommers) Thompson, Crystal Allison and husband, Steve, Tricia, Shiri and David Harris; two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Natalie Allison; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hunley, John D. - John D. Hunley, the son of Robert D. and Roberta (Simpson) Hunley, was born November 15, 1939, in Thurman, Iowa. He attended country school in Thurman. 

In the summer of 1982, John was united in marriage to Beverly Deering at the Tarkio Baptist Church in Tarkio, Missouri. They made their home in Watson, Missouri, and following the flood in 1993, they moved to Tarkio. 

John was employed at Goode Grain in Hamburg, Iowa, and then as a farm hand doing seasonal work for Tim Whelan in Watson. He was a carpenter who excelled in woodworking, and could make anything out of wood. John enjoyed being outdoors and spent many hours gardening. According to his family, he grew the “best tomatoes.” John passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 78. 

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two infant sons and three brothers. Survivors include wife, Beverly Hunley, Tarkio; five step daughters, Debbie (Rex) Kellum, Norfolk, Virginia, June (Richard) Harvey, Emporia, Kansas, Teresa Torrence, Mona Horn and Toni Deering, all of Everett, Washington; ten grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters; one brother; and numerous nieces and nephews.

AnnaBelle Johnson, the daughter of Robert Lesley and Ora Ethel (Nuckolls) Stevens, was born November 13, 1924, in Tarkio, Missouri. She graduated from North Star country school, east of Westboro, Missouri.  Recently, AnnaBelle graduated from “Senior Life Solutions” at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, but remarked “it was only for old people.” 

On December 15, 1946, AnnaBelle was united in marriage to Harry Marshall Johnson in Iowa.  They became the parents of one son, Wendell, and made their home on the Johnson family farm, one mile east of Westboro, to the present time. 

AnnaBelle was a true “farmer’s wife.”  AnnaBelle was employed as a cook at the Elks Club in Shenandoah, Iowa.  She owned and operated the Farmers Café in Westboro, for 10 years.  For 35 years, she also cooked for the Westboro Lions Club.  AnnaBelle catered for the Tarkio Rotary Club and Tarkio Nutrition Site bingo nights, as well as catered weddings and other events. 

AnnaBelle was a member of the Westboro United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.  Other organizations that AnnaBelle faithfully served were: Current President of Westboro Lions Club, Merrill-Smith American Legion Auxiliary Unit #32, Westboro, Atchison County Democratic Committee, Women’s Club and formerly served as Secretary for Center Grove Cemetery. 

AnnaBelle was more than just a cook for her family. Your cinnamon toast was cut into little bite size squares. Coconut cream pie was a must, right next to the 10 course meal she insisted on serving. Her devotion and love ran deep to every generation. She enjoyed quilting and crocheting. She embroidered pillow cases and tea towels for her grandchildren.  Her grandkids and great-grandchildren recall her presence at every event she could get to while she made you pose for her disposable camera picture. She took great pleasure in attending ball games, graduations, weddings, music concerts, and the County Fair as their biggest fan. She loved to garden and to “work up” whatever she harvested. Many hours were spent making jelly, canning corn, pickles and tomato juice. Playing dominoes, JENGA, Monopoly, and slap Jack were some competitive memories that all generations shared with her. And she was not one to “let ya win!”  Her love for the farm ran deep! In the spring she loved watching the planting season in session and harvest in the fall. She counted all 19 cows across the road. She talked farming with all of her grandkids, watching farm sales and rodeos on TV for hours.  AnnaBelle passed away Monday, October 29, 2018, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 93. 

In addition to her parents and husband, Harry, AnnaBelle was preceded in death by infant granddaughter, Kristine Johnson, grandson, Kenneth Johnson, and nine brothers and sisters.  Survivors include son, Wendell Johnson, Westboro; three grandchildren, Kolette Johnson, Clarinda, Iowa, Karen (Jeff) Williams and Cody Johnson, all of Westboro; nine great-grandchildren, Taylor (Sierra) Hielen, Landry Hester, Adysen Hester, Kelsey (Jared) Price, Kaly (Jake) Wyatt, Keisha Williams, Keaton Williams, Savannah Johnson and Brady Johnson; three great-great-grandchildren, M.J. Michael E. Johnson, the son of Billy Joe and Lyllis Ann (Chaney) Johnson, was born April 16, 1971, in Fairfax, Missouri.  He attended Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri, graduating in 1989.  Mike then received his vocational technology certificate in auto body repair.

 In March 2003, Mike was united in marriage to Daniella Arnold and he became a Dad to her four sons, Nick, Harley, Richard and Dylan.  They later divorced.  On August 10, 2018, Mike was united in marriage to his companion of eight years, Crystal Runnels.  They are the parents of one daughter, Amber.

 In the early 1990’s, Mike was employed by Zip Stop in Rock Port as a cleaner and fuel jock.  In 2003, he was employed by Trails End and was currently working as a night supervisor.  Mike passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2018, at Bryan LGH East Hospital, Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 47.

 In addition to his mother, Mike was preceded in death by grandfather, Oscar Johnson and grandparents, Henry, Jr. and Lucille (Roberts) Chaney.  Survivors include wife, Crystal Johnson, Tarkio; daughter, Amber, Tarkio; four stepsons, Nick Schramm, Tarkio, Harley Schramm, Falls City, Nebraska, Richard Arnold, Cherokee, Iowa, and Dylan Arnold, Falls City; father, Bill Johnson; grandmother, Gertrude Johnson, both of Tarkio; sister, Pam (Joey) Corbin, Tarkio, and step grandchildren, Noah and Landon.

Kirk, Betty Leona Patton - Betty Leona Kirk, the daughter of Jesse Ford and Rachael (Maness) Patton, was born July 29, 1924, in Rock Port, Missouri. She attended country schools in the Rock Port area, completing 8th grade.

On December 20, 1945, Betty was united in marriage to James Campbell “JC” Kirk. They became the parents of four children, Joe, Gene, Diane and Jimmie. J.C passed away in 1999.

Betty and J.C. lived in the Rock Port and Hamburg, Iowa, areas, retiring to Riverton, Iowa. They later moved to the Washington-Park Plaza apartments in Hamburg. Betty had resided at the Ambassador Care Center in Sidney since October of 2014.

Betty loved family dinners, thrift store shopping, bingo, and visiting with her sisters. She was very patriotic, and attended Veteran’s Memorial Day services every year except this year when her health was failing. Her favorite activity at the Ambassador was watching Elvis perform. Betty passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at Grape Community Hospital, Hamburg, at the age of 93.

In addition to her parents and husband, J.C., Betty was preceded in death by son, Jimmie Dean Kirk, sisters, Bessie Patton, Hattie Mae Chastain, Marie Daugherty and Tressie Hart. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Cecil Lee Smith, who was killed in WWII. Survivors include sons, Joe Kirk and wife, Lana Brandt, Hamburg, Gene Kirk and wife, Joan, Farragut, Iowa; daughter, Dink Hargrave and husband, Gary, St. Joseph, Missouri; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandsons; sisters, Elsie Foster and Rosie McConnell (Hooter); brother, Arley Patton (June); and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Kirwan, Richard "Rick" Glenn - Richard Glenn "Rick" Kirwan, the son of Dana and Kathleen (Newton) Kirwan, was born July 24, 1942, in Weymouth, Massachusetts. He graduated high school in Massachusetts then attended Iowa Western, graduating with a carpentry and landscaping degree. 

On April 20, 1960, Rick entered the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. On April 19, 1963, he received his honorable discharge. 

Rick worked as a carpenter and for Iowa Beef Packers. He was a member of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199, Tarkio. Rick loved hunting, fishing, cooking and enjoying a beer with a friend. Rick passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at his home in Tarkio at the age of 75. 

In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by brothers, Jeff and David Kirwan. Survivors include children, Charlie Kirwan and wife, Sarawn, Tarkio, Matt Womeldorff and wife, Tiffany, California, and Jody Murry and husband, Jim, St. Joseph, Missouri; step-children, Diana Jones and husband, John, Craig, Missouri, Mark Womeldorff and wife, Bonnie, Fairfax, Missouri, and Tammy Knapp and husband, Randy, Craig; seven grandchildren; brother, Scott Kirwan, Massachusetts; and sister-in-law, Martha Kirwan, Florida.

Jessie Marie (Herron) Knierim, the daughter of William Jesse and Mabel Venice (Sauceman) Herron, was born May 22, 1931, in Watson, Missouri.  She grew up in rural Watson and Rock Port, Missouri areas.  Jessie attended Shiloh Country School and Rock Port High School, graduating in 1949.

 On November 25, 1952, Jessie was united in marriage to Charles Knierim in Waco, Texas, while Charles was serving in the United States Air Force.  In September 1953, they returned to the farm in the High Creek community and became the parents of two children, Debbie and Clay.  In 1960, they moved into Rock Port, then in 1974 moved to their farm east of Rock Port for a short time before returning to town in 1978, where she made her home to the present time.  Charles passed away in 2003.

 Jessie was a homemaker, raising and caring for her two children. She also worked part-time at the Atchison County Library in Rock Port for three years and as a secretary at Rock Port High School.  Occasionally, she helped proofread at the Atchison County Mail.

 Jessie was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port, W.E.L.C.A., Rock Port Chapter #440, Order of the Eastern Star and the Ralph Greer American Legion Auxiliary Unit #49, Rock Port.  Jessie passed away September 24, 2018, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 87.

 In addition to her parents and husband, Charles, Jessie was preceded in death by three brothers, W.H. Liess, Amanda N. - Amanda N. Liess, 33, passed away on Friday, November 30, 2018 at her Rock Port, Missouri home. 

She was born in Fairfax, Missouri on July 23, 1985, the eldest of five children of Larry and Diana (Rightsell) Liess. 

Amanda graduated from Tarkio High School in 2006.

Lundy, Evalynn Rodlynn - Evalynn Rodlynn Lundy, the daughter of Joshua Keith and Telesa Ann (Shaw) Lundy, was stillborn Friday, March 23, 2018, at Shenandoah Medical Center, Shenandoah, Iowa.

Evalynn was preceded in death by grandfather, Rodney Shaw, grandmother, Terri Rails, and great-grandmother, Norma Pinkerton. Moore, Maureen K. Barnett - Maureen K. Moore, the daughter of Rev. Dale J. and Lavone M. (Halseth) Barnett, was born August 25, 1964, in Great Bend, Kansas. She attended Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri, graduating in 1982. Maureen then attended Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, where she studied business administration.

Maureen was united in marriage to Scott Jones and they became the parents of one son, Jeff. They later divorced. On July 12, 1997, Maureen was united in marriage to Wayne Moore at the Peace Lutheran Church in Branson, Missouri, a church that was planted in the mid 1980’s by Maureen’s father, Rev. Barnett. They made their home in Rock Port to the present time.

Maureen worked for a bank in Branson and for the Bank of Atchison County in Rock Port. In 1988, Maureen was employed as the Rock Port City Clerk Administrator and Court Administrator. While serving in that position for 20 years, Maureen received several certifications; Certified Municipal Clerk and Master Municipal Clerk from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, Missouri Registered City Clerk and Missouri Professional City Clerk from the Missouri City Clerk’s and Finance Officer’s Association, and Certified Court Administrator from the Missouri Association of Court Administrators. In 2008, Maureen retired due to ill health. She fought a courageous and lengthy battle of breast cancer and leukemia. Maureen passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018, at her home in Rock Port at the age of 53.

Maureen enjoyed swimming and playing the piano. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and pets. To Maureen’s family and friends, she was affectionately known as “Grammie,” “Ammie,” “Twink,” or “Mo.”

In addition to her father, Maureen was preceded in death by grandparents, George and Nellie (Cooke) Barnett and Marvin and Florence (Blessum) Halseth, uncles, Bruce Halseth and Gary Freeman, father-in-law, Oscar Moore, Jr. and brother-in-law, Jerry Moore. Morrill, Rosemary Kyle - Rosemary (Kyle) Morrill, the daughter of Newton Parker, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Wilson) Kyle, was born June 21, 1932, in Maryville, Missouri. She attended Peru High School, Peru, Nebraska, graduating in 1950. Rosemary also attended Peru State College and graduated from Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954. 

On August 7, 1955, Rosemary was united in marriage to Lowell Morrill in Tarkio. They became the parents of four children, Deborah Lynn, Thomas Duane, John David and Leigh Ann. They made their home in Colorado, Iowa, Missouri, and the last 45 years in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Rosemary currently lived in her daughter’s home in Edmond, Oklahoma, where she passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, Thursday, January 18, 2018, at the age of 85. 

For a short time, Rosemary was an elementary school teacher before staying home to raise and take care of her children. She was an amazing stay-at-home mom constantly ferrying kids to and from sports and band practice. 

Rosemary (and Lowell) were faithful and active members of the Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Tulsa. They joined The Kirk in 1972 and attended Sunday worship weekly. She was a member of the Elizabeth/Rebekah Circle, served on the Bereavement Team (memorial services), was a Sunday morning hospitality volunteer, a Wednesday night cook, Monday morning Sanctuary Guild and attended Sunday School and numerous bible studies with Lowell. She was an amazing friend to many at The Kirk and she will be greatly missed. She was a loving mother, grandmother and neighbor. Rosemary was known by many to be "the sweetest person", and regarded as "always thinking of others". She enjoyed making crafts with her Craft Crowd friends for over 35 years, watching and feeding the birds, baking and planting flowers in her garden. Music was an important part of her life, as she was a proficient violinist and appreciated beautiful music. 

In addition to her parents, Rosemary was preceded in death by daughter, Deborah Lynn on September 9, 1956, brothers, Newton (Bud) Parker Kyle, Jr and wife, Nancy, and her twin David Theodore Kyle, DDS. Survivors include husband, Lowell Morrill, Edmond; children, Tom Morrill and wife, Brenda, Kansas City, Missouri, John Morrill and wife, Maricel, Pinellas Park, Florida, and their children, Kyle David and Mark David, and Leigh Ann Brown and husband, Michael, Edmond, and their son, Justin Brown; great-grandson, Anthony Brown; and sister-in-law, Vicki Kyle, Glenwood, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.

Murphy, James Ronald - James Ronald (Ron) Murphy, the son of Marvin and Bascha (Cummingham) Murphy was born June 30, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Bellevue Mission High School, Bellevue, Nebraska. 

On September 16, 1961, Ron was united in marriage to Janice Marie Whited in Bellevue. They made their home in Omaha, Nebraska, and became the parents of three children, Steven, Lauriette and Shellene. 

Ron was employed by Fisher Ornamental Iron as a welder and fabricator. He created works of iron that were showcased in the Omaha Home Show. Ron also worked for Gate City Steel and then drove a bus for Metro Area Transit in Omaha. In 1985, they moved to Gentry, Missouri, where he farmed with his Dad for one year. In 1986, they moved to Tarkio, Missouri, where Ron was employed by Excel Beef, Phelps City, Missouri. In the middle 1990’s, they moved to Fairfax, Missouri, where they lived to the present time. 

Ron was a former member of the Teamsters and participated in the Eagles Club, in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. He loved classic cars and owned and drove a stock car with his brother, Bill, at Sunset Speedway in Omaha and Playland Speedway in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Ron enjoyed league bowling and fishing trips with his family. He was proud of his California Native American Ancestry, belonging to the Son Joaquin Valley Yokuet Tribe. Ron was a loving grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and watching them grow. He was a caring person who had a lot of friends but would always be willing to stop and help a stranger in need, even if that meant “giving them the shirt off his back.” Ron passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018, at his home in Fairfax, at the age of 74. 

In addition to his parents, Ron was preceded in death by brothers, Bill and Allan Murphy. Survivors include wife, Janice Murphy, Fairfax; son, Steven Murphy and wife, Michaelle, Milton, Missouri; daughters, Lauriette Varley, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Shellene Murphy, Bellevue; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three siblings, Lindsay Sexton and husband, Ron, Garland, Texas, Marveen Phelps and husband, Russell, Madison, Wisconsin, and Marvin Richard Murphy and wife, Paula, Willow Springs, Texas; and nieces, nephew and cousins.

Murr, Mary Ann Lamaak - Mary Ann (Lamaak) Murr, the daughter of Hans and Alma (Koster) Lamaak was born April 17, 1949 in Denison, Iowa. She attended Denison, Iowa schools. In September of 1966, Mary was united in marriage to Jerry Murr in a Lutheran Church in Odebolte, Iowa. They became the parents of three children; Tracy, Tripp and Scott. They made their home in Rock Port, Missouri until 1972, when they moved to Corning, Missouri, where they lived to the present time.

For several years, Mary was employed at the Shop & Hop located at Exit 99 in Corning, Missouri. Mary was an avid gardener, where she and Jerry would raise many vegetables, pumpkins and gourds. Mary was an excellent seamstress, sewing her own clothing and Barbie clothes. She also enjoyed fishing, garage sales, canning vegetables and playing Canasta with her grandchildren. Mary had an extensive doll collection spanning from childhood to date along with a collection of Campbell’s Soup memorabilia. Mary passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at Mosaic Life Care, St. Joseph, Missouri at the age of 69.

Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by grandson, Kayenne Hall; sisters, Janis Malone, Norma Jean DeMey, Bernetta Lamaak; brothers, Philip, Norman and Kenny Lamaak. Noah, Raymond L. - Raymond L. Noah, the son of Raymond Carl and Minnie Ethel (Livengood) Noah, was born June 16, 1931, in Langdon, Missouri. He attended Phelps City Grade School, Phelps City, Missouri, and Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri, graduating in 1949. After graduating, Raymond worked for Clifton Furniture in Rock Port. On August 29, 1950, Raymond joined the United States Air Force, proudly serving his country in the Korean War. He received his honorable discharge August 28, 1954. Following his military service, Raymond attended University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri, graduating with an electrical engineering degree.

On September 5, 1954, Raymond was united in marriage to Julia True at the Pleasant View Presbyterian Church in Craig, Missouri, by Dr. Alfred Martin.

Raymond was employed as an electrical engineer at Honeywell, Inc. in St. Petersburg, Florida, for 29 years, retiring in 1988, as the Chief Engineer of the Military Avionics Division. He was involved in classified programs, specifically with the U2 and Black Birds-SR71 spy planes.

Raymond was a private pilot and enjoyed camping and fishing. He was baptized in the Pleasant View Presbyterian Church in Craig and was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Clearwater, Florida. Raymond was also a member of the Honeywell Minnreg Organization. Raymond passed away Monday, June 18, 2018, in Clearwater, Florida, at the age of 87.

In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by brother, Dean Noah and granddaughter, Kathryn Eloise Ward. Palmer, Robert "Bob" - Robert (Bob) Palmer died July 7, 2018 in North Kansas City, MO. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday July 12, Linden Cemetery, rural Rock Port, MO. There will be viewing and visitation at 10:00 AM at the Linden Christian Church.

Robert Palmer was born January 28, 1930 in Twin Falls, ID, to Robert Sr. and Iva Simmons Palmer. Following his father’s death, he and his mother returned to the Simmons family farm in Centropolis, KS. In 1942, he moved to Lawrence, KS. He graduated from high school in 1949. He attended the University of Kansas before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He married Dolores Cloepfil of Tarkio, MO on August 25, 1957. They resided in Lawrence until 1992, when they moved to Kansas City North. There were four children born of this union. Their oldest son, James Robert, died in April, 1980.

Bob was an active member of Sheet Metal Workers Local #2, Kansas City, MO. Before his retirement, he was employed by Cornell Roofing and Sheet Metal, Independence, MO.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Stanley Palmer (Dana) of Offerle, KS, Jean Sauer (Stan) of Kansas City North, and Elaine Laber (Eron) of Milwaukee, WI, nine grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

Meredith Keith Proctor, the son of Howard Clayton and Phyllis Hope (Shandy) Proctor, was born November 21, 1938, in Phelps City, Missouri.  He attended school in Phelps City and Rock Port, Missouri. 

In 1964, Keith was united in marriage to Glenda Marie Kimball.  They made their home in the Rock Port and Watson, Missouri, areas their entire married life.  Glenda passed away February 14, 2011. 

Keith was employed as a farmhand and drove a truck for Keith Phillips and other area farmers.  Keith was a hard worker and faithfully cared for his wife, Glenda.  He enjoyed drinking coffee with friends and exchanging tall tales.  Keith passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at Mosaic Life Care, St. Joseph, Missouri, at the age of 79. 

In addition to his parents and wife, Keith was preceded in death by sister-in-law, Janelle Nenneman.  Survivors include two sisters, Patty and Sharon; sisters-in-law, Mickie Gessert, Ellen Waggoner and Debra Strong; brother-in-law, Monty Kimball; nieces and nephews; and special friends, Roger Rohgers and Barbara Hines.

Pruett, Rose Marie Hudson - Rose Marie Pruett, the daughter of John Rainey and Naomi G. (Sayers) Hudson, was born September 1, 1956, in Akron, Ohio. She attended high school in Ohio and later attended nursing school at Northwest Technical School in Maryville, Missouri, graduating with a Licensed Practical Nurse degree in the mid 2000’s. 

On July 20, 1973, Rose was united in marriage to Michael J. Pruett, Sr. in Springfield, Ohio. They became the parents of Michael, Rusty and Toni. 

Rose enjoyed working with the elderly in nursing homes in Ohio. In 1997, they moved to Rock Port, Missouri, where she was employed at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port. In the mid 2000’s, Rose began her LPN nurse’s training and continued working at Pleasant View until ill-health forced retirement. 

Rose loved caring for her grandchildren, reading, watching the “Big Bang Theory,” and caring for her husband, Mike. Mike passed away April 18, 2016. 
Rose passed away Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Pleasant View Nursing Home at the age of 61. 

Rose was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Survivors include children, Michael J. (Ashlee) Pruett, Jr., Rock Port, Rusty (Cherish) Pruett, Bethany, Missouri, and Toni (Angelo) Dipietro, Wadsworth, Ohio; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings, John (Donna) Hudson, Debbie (Ken) Ogden, Betty Davidson, Billie Joe, and special thanks to brother, Skip Hudson, who was there through most of her battle.

Elic Lando Riley, the son of Willard Frank and Dolly Luena (Hicks) Riley, was born June 22, 1938, in Tarkio, Missouri.  He attended Tarkio High School, graduating in 1957.

 On January 23, 1960, Elic was united in marriage to Karen Ann McNaughton in Fairfax, Missouri.  They made their home in Elmo, Missouri, and became the parents of three children, Jeffrey Ferrell, Lanita Jean, and Elic Jerome (Jerry).

 Elic began farming with his father Willard on the Scamman farm, and later farmed on his own.

 Elic was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Tarkio, where he served as a deacon, taught the Royal Ambassadors and drove for the bus ministry.  He was a current member of the Assembly of God Church in Tarkio, and had served as an Elder.

 Elic loved to talk about Jesus and all the LORD had done for him. He regularly read his Bible and often quoted scripture. He enjoyed family time, especially hunting and fishing with his kids and grandkids. Elic passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at his home in Elmo at the age of 80.

Roberts, Virgil L. - Virgil L. Roberts, the son of Ernest Leon and Josephine (Bendon) Roberts, was born July 9, 1955, in Fairfax, Missouri. He attended Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri. In 1975, Virgil entered the United States Air Force, receiving his honorable discharge in 1978.

In 1974, Virgil was united in marriage to Carla Huber at the Assembly of God Church in Tarkio, Missouri. They became the parents of two children, Ernest and Angela, and made their home in Germany and California while Virgil was serving in the United States Air Force. They later divorced.

Virgil was a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers. He read blueprints and inspected boilers in nuclear power plants, retiring in the late 1990’s. Virgil then owned and operated “Bloomers Flower Shops” in New York State.

Virgil loved to play and sing the guitar, fish and spend time with his family, especially with his brother, Bryan. Virgil passed away Sunday, June 17, 2018, at Mercy Hospital, Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 62.

Virgil was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Roberts. Rolofson, Dixie Dean Barnett - Dixie Dean (Barnett) Rolofson, age 90, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Dixie was born February 15, 1928 in Allendale, Missouri the daughter of Francis and Mae (Poe) Barnett. Dixie graduated from the Westboro High School in 1946 and was united in marriage to Warren “Pete” Rolofson on July 7, 1946 in Hiawatha, Kansas. They began their married life on a farm east of Westboro. They lived on farms near Tarkio, Missouri until 1957 when they moved to Iowa. They lived on an acreage on the edge of Red Oak. Pete passed away on October 5, 2012 just before his 90th birthday. Dixie took a year of nurses training in Shenandoah and worked at several jobs. She was employed at Thos. D. Murphy Co. calendar factory, at a restaurant as a manager, at Union Carbide for 29 years, and 14 years at No Frills as a cashier. She was also the owner and operator of Rusty’s at the local swimming pool. Dixie retired from Hy-Vee at the age of 77 years. Dixie enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, and tending her flowers, especially orchids. Dixie loved her pets and truly treasured time spent with her grandchildren. She was a longtime member of the Red Oak Eagles Lodge where she was the secretary/treasurer of REAC for several years.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband: Warren “Pete” Rolofson; brothers: Carl and Junior Barnett; son-in-law: Eugene Roof; and niece: Sharon Barnett. Dixie’s sister-in-law: June Wensel also passed away June 10, 2018. Smith, James "Clifford" - James Clifford Smith, the son of Charles Clifford and Leona Maude (Freeman) Smith, was born February 17, 1937, in Tarkio, Missouri. He attended Westboro High School, graduating in 1955. 

On December 8, 1957, Clifford was united in marriage to Luretta Rose Harbison at the First Baptist Church in Tarkio. They made their home in Tarkio until 1963 when they moved to the Smith family farm northeast of Tarkio, where Clifford lived to the present time. They became the parents of three children; Clifford Brian, Belinda Suzanne and Lauren Brent. 

Clifford loved farming and managing their cattle. He drove a school bus for 25 years and was bus superintendent for 20 years. 

Clifford was a member of the First Baptist Church, Tarkio, where he formerly served as a deacon. He and Luretta belonged to the Hitch Hiker Camping Club and for 15 years enjoyed pulling their camper to Arizona and Branson, Missouri. He also served on the Tarkio Nutrition Center and Rural Fire Boards. Luretta passed away January 1, 2017. Although Clifford was “full of orneriness” he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend and will be deeply missed by all. Clifford passed away Monday, May 28, 2018 at his home, at the age of 81. 

In addition to his parents and wife, Luretta, Clifford was preceded in death by brothers and sisters-in-law, John Fischer, Dean and Pat Meek, Loren Schoonover, Gilbert Burke and Beverly and Bill Springer. Gary A. Sparks, the son of Raymond and Mary E. (Gregory) Sparks, was born January 29, 1947, in Maryville, Missouri.  He attended Maryville High School, graduating in 1965. 

On July 8, 1967, Gary was united in marriage to Sharon Kay Loeffler at the Baptist Church in Maryville.  They made their home in Tarkio, Missouri, and became the parents of three children, Gary R., Wayne, and Melinda.  Sharon passed away July 27, 2006. 

Gary was employed as a welder at numerous businesses including:  Grebe’s Machine Shop in Tarkio, Farm Master Gates in Shenandoah, Iowa, Behlen Manufacturing in Columbus, Nebraska, and for a short time on the railroad.  In 1986, Gary and Sharon owned and operated “Sparks Hunting and Fishing” out of their home in Tarkio, where they later relocated the business to a garage behind their home.  In 2006, Gary retired from Auburn Consolidated Industries, Auburn, Nebraska. 

Gary was a member of the National Rifle Association.  He was a hard worker, who enjoyed hunting and working on cars, especially working with his son, Gary Ray, on his stock car.  Gary passed away Friday, November 30, 2018, at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care, at the age of 71. 

In addition to his parents and wife, Gary was preceded in death by son, Gary Ray Sparks, sister, Gwynetha (Granny) Christianson, and infant brother, Jimmy Sparks.  Survivors include son, Wayne Sparks, Tarkio; daughter, Melinda Curtis, Rock Port, Missouri; grandchildren, Billy Daugherty and wife, Kelly, Fairfax, Missouri, Robert Curtis, Rock Port, Caci Sparks, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Shaylee Sparks, Tarkio; two great-grandchildren, Paisleigh Daugherty and Emma Barnett; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sparks, Gary Ray - Gary Ray Sparks, the son of Gary Arthur and Sharon Kay (Loeffler) Sparks, was born January 3, 1968, in Fairfax, Missouri. Gary graduated from Tarkio High School in 1986. He then attended Northwest Technical School, Maryville, Missouri, for two years receiving his diploma in Auto Mechanics.

In 1994, Gary was united in marriage to Tami Gorman and they became the parents of two daughters, Caci and Shaylee. They later divorced.

Gary was employed by VanBuskirk construction and traveled throughout Iowa as a heavy equipment mechanic and for a short time he was employed by Mather Construction, Westboro, as a tile operator. Gary was later employed by St Joseph Correctional Facility, St Joseph, Missouri, as a guard, then a machine operator at Kawasaki, Maryville. Currently, Gary was employed in Auburn, Nebraska, for the Ariens Company.

Gary enjoyed playing poker at the casino, watching NASCAR, football and “The Deadliest Catch” on television. He was especially proud of Shaylee playing in the high school band and considered himself a “Band Dad”. Gary loved telling stories and making his daughters smile. He worked hard to provide for them. His sudden passing, at the age of 50, on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at his home in Tarkio, brings a tear to his family.

Gary is preceded in death by his mother, Sharon Sparks, and grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Sparks. Survivors include daughters, Caci Renee’ Sparks, Lincoln, Nebraska, Shaylee Elizabeth Sparks, Tarkio; adopted daughters, Donna Marie, Asia Jean, Alexis and Zavien; father, Gary A. Ronnie E. Sutter, the son of Evan Leonard and Matie Viola (Gebhards) Sutter, was born October 8, 1937, in Langdon, Missouri.  He attended Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri, graduating in 1955. 

On November 4, 1956, Ronnie was united in marriage to Phyllis Ann Smith at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Langdon.  They became the parents of three children, Jerry, Debbie and Kevin.  They made their home east of Rock Port until 1966, when they moved to their current home, north of Rock Port. 

Ronnie was a true farmer.  He enjoyed working the dirt and harvesting his crops. Throughout the years, he raised hogs, cows, chickens and sheep.  Ronnie also drove a truck, hauling cattle, fuel and other agricultural products for area trucking companies. 

Ronnie was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port.  He enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, boating in the Ozarks, woodworking and watching his family race stock cars.  Ronnie passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at his home in Rock Port at the age of  80. 

In addition to his parents, Ronnie was preceded in death by son, Jerry Sutter.

Thomas, Jerome D. "Jerry" - Jerome D. (Jerry) Thomas, the son of Homer Dorwin and Clara June (Clifton) Thomas was born December 22, 1948, in Hamburg, Iowa. He passed away on February 3, 2018, at Bryan Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 69. He graduated from Hamburg High School in 1967 and attended college for one year at Iowa Western, Clarinda, Iowa. Jerry excelled in baseball and in 1968 was offered a contract to pitch for the Cincinnati Reds. 

On January 19, 1968, Jerry was united in marriage to Patricia Graves and they became the parents of four children, Kerry, James, Mindy and Clint. They later divorced. On March 10, 1989, Jerry was united in marriage to Betsy Reynolds at the Rock Port Christian Church. At this time, Jerry also became a father to her three daughters, Amy, Lora and Anne. They made their home in Rock Port till his death. 

Jerry worked several jobs throughout high school, which included working the farm with his Father. After a year of college, Jerry worked at American Meter Company in Nebraska City, Nebraska before returning to farming. In 1983, Jerry began working for the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT). It was while working for MODOT that he was given the nickname “Bull” by his supervisor. He retired in 2006, as the Barn Foreman at Tarkio, Missouri. 

Jerry and Betsy enjoyed camping and belonged to S.H.E.R.T (State Highway Employees Retired and Tired) camping group. He also enjoyed fishing, wood working and coaching his children when they played softball and baseball. Jerry made sure he attended EVERY activity in which they participated. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and talking to everyone. 

Jerry was preceded in death by his father, infant son, James, and grandparents, Homer and Glee Thomas and Chet and Ruth Clifton. Umbarger, Bently J. - Bently J. Umbarger, 58, of Panorama City, California, passed away there June 6, 2018. He was born October 30, 1959, in Columbus, Ohio, the son of William and Marjorie Umbarger.

The family moved back to the Fairfax community in 1963. Bently graduated from Fairfax High School in the class of 1978. He attended the Institute of Technology in Kansas City, Missouri, where he completed an electric technician program and graduated in 1980. He accepted a position in his field with Litton Industry in Woodland Hills, California. A few years later they went out of business and he was employed with an entertainment special effects company in North Hollywood, California, for about 30 years. When his health declined, he did computer work from his home and always enjoyed his work at Lightning Strikes.

Survivors include his parents, Bill and Margie Umbarger; brother, Tim and wife, Sandy; nephews, Daniel and Treyvor and his wife, Kris; great-nephew, Emmett; great-niece, Abigail, all from Fairfax; and brother, Bradley and his wife, Lai, of Lee's Summit, Missouri.

Michael A. (Mike) Umbarger, the son of John Duane and Laveta Vaun (Payton) Umbarger, was born August 27, 1959, in Fairfax, Missouri.  He attended Fairfax High School, Fairfax. 

On November 14, 1987, after deer hunting, Mike and Julie (Bogenreif) Hull rushed to the Tarkio Baptist Church and were united in marriage.  They honeymooned in their deer stand.  Mike became a father to Julie’s daughter, Krystal, and later they became the parents of daughter, Karly.  They made their home in the Tarkio and Westboro, Missouri, areas their entire married life. 

Mike was employed by Tarkio Tire and Henning Farms.  For the last 18 years, he was employed by the Atchison County Highway Department until the present time. 

Mike was a member of the Westboro Volunteer Fire Department.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping at the Missouri River or anywhere that you could cook a hot dog or catch a fish.  Mike passed away Sunday, October 14, 2018, surrounded by his family, at his home in Westboro at the age of 59.

Betty Jean Van Leuven, the daughter of Charles Edward and Euphemia Mae (Nuckolls) Stevens, was born June 25, 1933, in Fairfax, Missouri.  She attended Tarkio High School. 

In 1949, Betty was united in marriage to Elvis Boyd Devine.  They became the parents of one daughter, Sharley Ann.  They later divorced.  In 1958, Betty was united in marriage to James Hubert McIntosh and they became the parents of four sons, Kalvin, Paul, Kelly and Sid.  Jim passed away in 1989.  In 1999, Betty was united in marriage to Robert (Bob) Van Leuven.  Bob passed away in 2010.  In June 2018, Betty moved to Rocky Mount, Missouri, to live with her son, Kalvin. 

Earlier in life, she was employed at several grocery stores as a cashier and worked at the battery factory in Red Oak, Iowa.  For many years, Betty was a stay-at-home mom, raising and taking care of her children until they were grown and Jim retired.  Betty also worked as a babysitter, sometimes taking care of up to 28 children at one time.  Later, Betty earned a Dietician certificate and managed the Food Service at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port, Missouri, for many years. 

Many years ago, Betty was a member of the United Methodist Church in Tarkio and served in the nursery.  Betty passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at her home in Rocky Mount, at the age of 85. 

In addition to her parents and two husbands, Betty was preceded in death by numerous brothers and sisters and stepson, Terry McIntosh.   Survivors include daughter, Sharley Ann (Fred) Squier, Tarkio; sons, Kalvin (Stephanie) McIntosh, Rocky Mount, Paul (Shannon) McIntosh, Bellevue, Nebraska, Kelly (Cynthia) McIntosh, Trenton, Missouri, and Sid (Ashley) McIntosh, Shenandoah, Iowa; twelve grandchildren, Erik, Kenneth, Tyler, Tristan, Michelle, Nikole, Brannon, Evan, Rachel, Sarah, Sawyer and Gage; eight great-grandchildren, Noah, Ezra, Maddox, Kevin, Jeremiah, Kiera, Scarlett and Gizelle; sister, Dorothy Settell; and brother, Harry Stevens, both of Hereford, Texas.

Van Meter, Steve - Steve Van Meter passed away unexpectedly Sunday, February 11, 2018. He was born on January 21st, 1948, and grew up in Rock Port, Missouri. He was the son of Cecil and Helen (Rosenbohm) Van Meter. Steve graduated with a Master’s Degree in Agriculture Economics from the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri. He then went on to earn an MBA while living in Connecticut. Steve served in both the National Guard and Army Reserves. 

Steve was the owner of Van Meter Appraisal in Overland Park, Kansas, for many years. Prior to that time, he worked in the Agriculture Department of Connecticut Mutual in Hartford and as a commodity broker at the Kansas City Board of Trade. 

Steve was married to Eva Jo Mulvania on June 14, 1969, and they had two children, Doug and Kim. Steve was a life-long student of economics, an avid reader, loved the outdoors, could make any garden thrive, and delighted in his grandchildren. He was active in his church (COR Methodist), ushering for many years and volunteering with other groups there including Habitat for Humanity. 

He was predeceased by his father, Cecil, sister, Patricia, brother, Gordon, and infant granddaughter, Ruth. Steve is survived by his wife, Eva Jo Van Meter, Overland Park; mother, Helen Van Meter, Olathe, Kansas, children, Doug (Rebecca) Van Meter, Overland Park, and Kim (John) Fulkerson, Salina, Kansas; grandchildren, Judson and Mary Van Meter and Will, Isabel, and Mya Fulkerson; and numerous extended family. 

Steve was known for being a wonderful husband, son, father, and grandfather. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends who are comforted by his steadfast faith in Christ. 

A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 15th at 9:30 AM with service following at 10:30 AM in the Wesley Chapel of The Church of the Resurrection 13720 Roe Avenue, Leawood, Kansas. A graveside service will be held at Grange Hall Cemetery in Rock Port, Missouri, on Friday, February 16th at 11:30 AM. Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity or the Salvation Army.

Lois Verlee (Akers) Whelan, the daughter of Otto Ray and Eunice Veda (Piper) Akers, was born at home on March 7, 1924, in rural Gravity, Iowa.  She attended Spread Eagle country school and successfully completed the 8th grade.

 As a young lady, she worked in various family homes helping with household tasks until she moved to Shenandoah, Iowa.  She was then employed at Henry Fields Nursery in the filing department and the printing department.  She also worked as a seamstress and inspector at the glove factory in Shenandoah.

 On February 19, 1946, she met Timothy A. Whelan, a farmer from Watson, Missouri.  They were married on February 5, 1947, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Tarkio, Missouri, with Father Yehle officiating.  To this union, three children were born; Anna J., Timothy Ray, and Theresa M.  Tim passed away September 24, 1982.  Lois passed away surrounded by her family on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at the George C. Grape Community Hospital, Hamburg, Iowa, at the age of 94.

Lois loved to read and enjoyed working word search puzzles.  She embroidered beautiful pillowcases and attended the Watson Quilters group until her eyesight began to fail.  In the past, Lois enjoyed gardening, tending to her roses, and mowing until health problems arose.  However, she was always interested and actively involved in the farming operation and condition of the crops until her death.  Her family was most important to her, showing interest in their jobs and in the younger ones school work and activities.  Lois was a very hard working lady who put love into everything she did, including the made from scratch angel food cakes for family birthday parties.

 In addition to her parents and husband, Lois was preceded in death by brother, Darrell (Atha) Akers, sisters, Dorothy (Edward) Crowe, and Lavelle (Gerald) Werner, brother-in-law, Fred Fine, and two sons-in-law, Dean Harris and Kyland Wakefield.  Survivors include son, Timothy Ray Whelan and wife, Donna, Watson; daughters, Theresa M. Harris, Hamburg, and Anna J. Wakefield, Watson; four grandchildren, Tony (Carrie) Harris, Brian Harris, Matt Whelan and Lori (Nick) (Whelan) Kean; four great-grandchildren, Christian Harris, Mark Harris, Hermione Harris, and Allie Kean; sister, Youvaun Fine, Maryville, Missouri; many nieces and nephews; and numerous friends and other relatives.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 6, 2018, St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Tarkio, Missouri

Interment: High Creek Cemetery, Watson

Open visitation begins 9:00 A.M., Friday, Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port, where a Rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M., followed by family receiving friends from 6:30-7:30 P.M.
