Ames, Maria Mae Abraham -
Maria Mae Ames passed away Sunday [Feb 7, 1988] at the Bethesda Care Center, Tarkio, at the age of 84.
She was born in Rock Springs, Wyoming, the daughter of John and Catherine (Young) Abraham.
On August 17, 1919, she married Archie Ames in Basin, Wyoming. They made their home in the Loveil and Byron, Wyoming communities. He passed away in 1957.
Mrs. Ames came to Tarkio in 1986 to live with her daughter, Reva Staples.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of the Byron, Wyoming Ward.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Clay (Reva) Staples, Tarkio, Mo., seven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and two great great- grandchildren.
Mrs. Ames was preceded in death by her husband, Archie J. Ames; one son, Archie A. Ames; two brothers; one sister; and one grandson, Zane Staples.
Services will be held in Byron, Wyoming, Saturday, February 13.

Ball, Richard Edward -
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 23, 2005, at 10:30 am at the Fairfax
United Methodist Church in Fairfax, Missouri, for Richard Edward Ball of Fairfax. The services were conducted by Rev. Bob Francis. Masonic services were held Friday, April 22, 2005, at Schooler Funeral Home. Interment was made in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax. Funeral services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax and Craig, Missouri.
Ed was born in the Elkdale Community, southeast of Fairfax, Missouri. He was a lifelong resident of the Fairfax Community, where he had retired from his lifelong love of farming.
After graduating from Fairfax High School in 1943, Ed enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served his country during World War II, in the South Pacific. Much of Ed's time in the Marine Corps was spent as a member of the Marine detachment aboard the battleship, U.S.S. Colorado.
On December 18,1947, Ed married Carol Mae Wright, his bride of fifty-seven years. Along with farming, Ed was also employed by the U.S.D.A. as a spot checker. He had served as a 4-H project leader and on the Fairfax R-3 Board of Education.
Ed was a member of the Fairfax United Methodist Church, the Fairfax Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Moila Shrine. He was also a member of John Richards Post #284 American Legion and Voiture 1402, 40 and 8, and had been a Garst seed salesman for many years.
Ed was a devoted family man, helping raise four children. Survivors include his wife, Carol Mae, of Fairfax, Missouri; daughter, Betty Sue Allen and husband, Jim, of Kearney, Missouri; sons, Ralph E. Ball and wife, Gale, of Rock Port, Missouri, John E. Ball and wife, Tonnie, of Kearney, and James R. Ball and wife, Rhonda, of Fairfax; twelve grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Ed is also survived by one brother, Marion Ball of Mound City, Missouri; two sisters, Eva Helen Johnson of Mound City, and Barbara Jones of Fairfax; numerous nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, William J. and Helen H. Ball; two brothers, William H. and Warren C. Ball;
and a sister, Evelyn A. Whitford. Memorials may be directed to the Fairfax United Methodist Church.

Botkin, Mary Esther Irvine -
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 16, 2005, at Burr Oak Church Cemetery, Skidmore, Missouri, for Mary Esther (Irvine) Botkin, Kirksville, Missouri.
Mary Esther (Irvine) Botkin, age 98, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Twin Pines Adult Care Center. The daughter of Hamilton Armstrong and Maude (McElroy) Irvine, she was born November 22,1906, in Blanchard, Iowa. On December 9, 1927, in Mound City, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Edson Carter Botkin, Sr., who preceded her in death on April 16, 1951. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her son, Edson Carter Botkin, Jr.; four brothers, John, Francis, Robert and Harry Irvine; one sister, Lola Folden; and three half-brothers, Hamilton, Edward and Thomas Irvine.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lee Hall of Kirksville; a daughter-in-law, Jocelyn N. Botkin of Lee Summit, Missouri; four grandchildren, Belinda (Hall) Lynch and husband, James, Fredericksburg, Virginia, Brian G. Hall, Ann Arbor, Michigan, Melanie (Botkin) Lowe and husband, Pete, Hammontown, New Jersey, and Laura Botkin, Chicago, Illinois; and six great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Knepper, Perry, Iowa; a brother, James Irvine and wife, Marian, Fairfax; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary was raised in Atchison County, Missouri, and graduated from Daleview High School. After the death of her husband, she returned to college and received her degree from Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1953. She taught elementary school in North Kansas City, Rock Port, Platte City and Mendon, Missouri, until her retirement in 1972.
She was a member of the First Methodist Church, belonged to Ruth Circle, a member of Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Business and Professional Women and a life member of the Retired Teachers of Missouri. She enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening, family and friends. Memorials may be directed to the First Methodist Church or the Adair County Public Library. Brindle, Earl -
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 24, 2004, at the Presbyterian Church in Fairfax for Earl Brindle, Houston, Texas, formerly of Fairfax. Rev. Roger Manley officiated. Interment was made in English Grove Cemetery, Fairfax, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Earl Brindle, age 83 passed away on Wednesday, October 20, 2004. He was born January 7, 1921, in Rock Port, Missouri, to Orah and George Brindle. He was the fifth of six children. He graduated from Rock Port High School and attended Maryville College.
In 1940, he married Carmen Youel of Fairfax. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout and he served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Carmen and Earl lived in Atchison County for nearly 80 years and farmed west of Fairfax. Earl was active in the Fairfax Presbyterian Church and was a member of the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge. In 2002, Earl and Carmen moved to Houston, Texas, to be near their daughters and families.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years; his daughters, Chris Finch and Ann Cartwright; his sons-in-law, Reggie Finch and Lon Cartwright; and granddaughters, Jenny and Sarah Cartwright. He is also survived by his sister, Hazel Mitchell, of Forest Grove, Oregon and brother, Lewis Brindle, of Rock Port, Missouri. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the American Heart Association.

Heitman, Frances Elizabeth Morris -
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2002, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Corning, Missouri, for Frances Elizabeth Heitman, Rock Port, Missouri. Pastor John Sellmeyer officiated. Interment was made in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig, Missouri under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
Frances Elizabeth Heitman, age 86, the daughter of William H. and Milicent (Grace) Morris, was born on December 24, 1915, in Graham, Missouri. She passed away on Monday, December 23, 2002, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Shenandoah, Iowa.
She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Corning. Frances attended Graham Public Schools and graduated in 1934. She later attended Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Missouri, for two years and received her teaching certificate. She taught in numerous rural schools, Bell Grove, Angel Hollow and Shiloh, also at Corning, Mound City and Craig Public Schools, retiring in 1974.
On December 31, 1939, Frances was united in marriage to Wilbur George Heitman at St. John's Lutheran Church. To this union, two sons were born, Morris Heitman and William Heitman.
Frances was an avid gardener and bridge player. Her family was the center of her life, and her granddaughters' scholastic and athletic achievements were of special enjoyment. She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, involved in the Women's Guild and also served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. In addition, she led an adult Bible study class. Frances was an active member and past president of the Holt County Teacher's Association.
Survivors include sons, Morris Heitman and wife, Barb, Mound City, Missouri, and William Heitman and wife, Patsy, Fairfax, Missouri; granddaughters, Molly Boeckmann and husband, Kurt, Jefferson City, Missouri, Mandy Heitman, Columbia, Missouri, Heidi Heitman, Warrenton, Missouri, Trudy Heitman, Johnston, Iowa, Patty Heitman, Columbia, and Katie Heitman, Fairfax; great-granddaughter, Ellen Boeckmann, Jefferson City; and sister, Grace Combs, Mound City.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur, on December 10, 1989; brothers, William and Harold Morris; and a sister, Margaret Gregg. Memorials may be directed to the St. John's Lutheran Church, Corning.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 30, 2002, at Grange Hall Cemetery, north of Rock Port, Missouri, for Lula L. "Lou" Harrington, Rock Port. Rev. Eric Anderson officiated. Services were under the direction of Chamberlain Funeral Home, Rock Port.
Lula L. "Lou" Harrington, 91, was born July 2, 1911, in Coweta, Oklahoma, the daughter of John William and Portia Susie (Cunningham) Smith. She was educated there and later married Bob Harrington on October 9, 1928, in Wagoner, Oklahoma. They became the parents of a son, Bill, and the family moved to Rock Port, in 1942.
Bob worked as an auto mechanic until he retired in 1973. Bob passed away October 11,1991. Lou was a stay-at-home wife and mother whose family was her occupation until their son completed high school. She then worked as a clerk at Baker's Department Store in Maryville, Missouri, Reeling's Department Store in Tarkio, Missouri, and Simon Drug Store, Auburn, Nebraska.
In Rock Port she worked at Watts Cleaners and as an assistant in the offices of Dr. D.C. Gallup for ten years and Dr. Gary Powell for two years. She was a member of the Rock Port United Methodist Church. She was an avid reader, loved all kinds of sewing, playing cards, and working crossword puzzles. Lou was a good friend and neighbor, and a loving mom and grandmother whose family was always first in her heart.
She passed away at Community Hospital in Fairfax, Missouri, on Thursday, December 26, 2002, where she had been a patient since December 7.
Survivors are son, Bill, and daughter-in-law, Delores Harrington, Tarkio; two granddaughters, Laurie G. Rockhill, Independence, Missouri, and Merri L. Hubbard,
Excelsior Springs, Missouri one great-granddaughte Cristin C. Hubbard; a cousin Ella Lea Landreth, Tulsa, Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother Jack B. Smith. Memorials may be directed to the Rock Port Nutrition Site.

Haun, Daryl Ray -
Daryl Ray Haun, the son of Donald Lee and Wilma Haun, was born November 14,1961, in Maryville, Missouri. He entered into eternal rest Sunday, April 24, 2005, at the age of 43.
On June 18, 1983, he was married to Becky Richey at Plattsburg, Missouri. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his kids, gardening and gospel music. He was a loyal Christian and friend. Mr. Haun attended United Freewill Baptist Church and was employed as a leadman by Tindle Feed Company.
He is survived by his wife, Becky Haun of the family home; two children, Micheal Haun and Lora Haun, of the family home; his parents, Donald and Wilma Haun, Springfield, Missouri; two brothers, Larry Haun and wife, Sally, Forth Worth, Texas, and Dwight Haun and wife, Verna, Bolivar, Missouri; one sister, Malissa Lokey, and husband, Tom, Pagosa Springs, Colorado; his mother-in-law, Dortha Richey, Moody, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.
Daryl was preceded in death by his grandparents, W.C. and Hazel McNeall, Keytesville, Missouri; and Raymond and Violette Haun, Fairfax; and his father-in-law, Howard E. Richey.

Edna "E.P." Ray
Edna P. "E.P." Close, 94, passed away in Glenwood, Iowa on September 7, 2012.
She was born on September 21,1917 in Nishnabotna, Missouri. Edna graduated from Daleview High School in 1935.
On April 9,1939 she married high school classmate Athony L. "Phil" Close. They became parents of two children, and were lifetime residents and farmed in the area.
She was preceded in death by her husband Phil, on April 16, 2012; their son, Philip Ray Close; her parents, Nicholas J. and Edna (Christian) Ray; infant sister; two brothers, Harold and Raymond Ray.
E.P. is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Larry Kruse, Glenwood, Iowa; her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Dean and Natalie Ray, Sun City, Arizona; four grandsons; seven great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
E.P. was a member of the St. Oswald's In the Field Episcopal Church.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 13,2012 at Chamberlain Funeral Home, Mound City. Interment was held at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mound City. Crouse, Billy J.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, Wymore, Nebraska, for Billy J. Crouse of Odell, Nebraska. Interment was made in Liberty Cemetery under the direction of Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, Wymore.
Billy J. Crouse, 66, passed away at his sister's home in Wymore. He was born December 8,1937, in Fairfax. He spent most of his childhood at Liberty and attended Liberty Public School. He had been employed by the Farmers Cooperative in Blue Springs, Nebraska, for 18 years until his retirement
and had been working part-time for the Co-op at Pickrell since his retirement. He had previously worked at Liberty Elevator for Liberty area farmers at Dempster's and at Behrens Construction.
He married Loree Rix on February 25, 1978, at Omaha, Nebraska. He was a member of the Heartland Antique Tractor Pullers. His hobbies included tractors and tractor pulls, attending auctions, car races, fishing, hunting, driving through the countryside and attending all sporting events.
Survivors include his wife, Loree; sons, Joe Crouse and wife, Dawn, Wymore, Billy Crouse, Jr., of Cozad, Nebraska, Willy Crouse and fiancee', Brandi Kempf, Odell, and Randy Crouse, Blue Springs; daughters, Tammi Fegter and husband, Richard, Grand Island, Nebraska, Tonya Voet and husband, Mike, Oketo, Kansas,Thomasena Laflin and husband, Terry, Beatrice, Nebraska, and Toree Lang and husband, Travis, Blue Springs; grandchildren, Vanessa, Desiree, Chase, Derek, Megan, Talysha, Brandon, Ilene, Diamond and Justin; brother, O.J Crouse and wife, Janette, Beatrice; sisters, Peggy Henrich and husband, George, Wymore, Delpha Riley and husband, Edd, Carroll, Nebraska, and Elmeda Arterburn and husband, William, Beatrice; sister-in-law, Rose Morris, Omaha; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Ted" and Jessie D. (Atkins) Crouse; brother, Ted Crouse, Jr.; and nephew, Chad Dickinson. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran School in Beatrice and the family's choice with the funeral home in charge.

Culver, Neva Edna Combs-
.Neva Edna Culver 84, passed away Feb 3 [1988] at the Bethesda Care Center in Tarkio. She was born Dec. 6, 1903 in Clearmont, Mo., the daughter of John G. and Glenna (Gray) Combs.
As a young girl she attended the Prairie View Country School near Clearmont.
On March 4,1922 she was united in marriage to Robert Lee Culver in Maryville. They made their home and farmed in the Blanchard, Iowa community until 1970 when they moved to the North Parkway Housing Development in Tarkio.
Mr. Culver passed away Jan. 4, 1983. Through the years Neva developed her talent for refinishing furniture and everyone enjoyed her works of art.
She was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women of Blanchard. She enjoyed her memberships in the Birthday Club and the Killkare Klub, both of Blanchard.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Jim (Virginia) Brownlee, Farragut, la.; one sister, Mrs. Bill (Golda) Sunbarger, Maryville; five grandchildren, Glenn, Robert and David Brownlee, Rebecca Shull and Joy Hall, and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Services were held Feb. 5 at the United Methodist Church in Blanchard, la., conducted by Rev. Melinda R. Cree. Interment was at the Clearmont Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio.

Easley, Hadley -
James Hadley Easley was born in Leota, Mo. on Aug. 28, 1908. He moved to Northwest Missouri in his early childhood and attended school at Irish Grove near Fairfax.
In the early 1930s he served in the United States Coast Guard in the Philippines.
On Jan. 10,1936 he married Virginia Ragland in St. Joseph, Mo. They moved to Kansas and farmed for 2 years before moving to Northwest Missouri where they farmed until his retirement in 1973. They then moved to Rock Port where they have resided to the present time. Due to ill health he entered the Pleasant View Rest Home on Nov. 13, 1987. He was a member of the Rock Port Baptist Church.
Hadley passed away Jan. 26,1989 at the Community Hospital, Fairfax at the age of 79 years.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia of the home; two sons and two daughters, Chris Easley, Fairfax; Gary Easley, Rock Port; Mrs. Stephen (Sharon) Gaines, Watson; Mrs. George (Anne) Barnett, Tarkio; 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Arthur Easley; his mother, Mary Lucinda (Fite) Easley; one sister, Nora
Easley; two brothers who died in infancy.
Services were held Saturday afternoon at the Baptist Church in Rock Port, conducted by Rev. George Owens. Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery, Rock Port.

Davis, Irene Dunkle -
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 12,2004, at the United Methodist Church in Fairfax, Missouri for Lesta Irene Davis, Rock Port, Missouri, formerly of Fairfax. Rev. Judy Voss officiated. Interment was made at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Irene was born near Craig, Missouri, on February 15, 1912. She was one of 13 children born to George and Lesta (Boyer) Dunkle. She passed away at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port on Thursday, January 8, 2004, at the age of 91.
Irene received her education in rural schools in the Craig and Fairfax areas. On January 28, 1933, she became the wife of Paul E. Davis, Sr., at Savannah. Missouri. Paul
and Irene made their home on a farm in the Fairfax area, where they lived until they moved into town in 1946. They became the parents of three sons, Paul E. Davis, Jr., St. Joseph, Missouri, Gary L. Davis, Dataw Island, South Carolina, and Larry Joe Davis of Independence, Missouri. Paul preceded his wife in death in 1988.
Irene was a member of the Fairfax United Methodist Church and the Community Hospital Auxiliary, where she was very active. She served as president of that organization in 1981 and was also named "Auxilian of the Year" in 1981.
Irene continued to live in her own home until poor health caused her to become a resident of Pleasant View Rest Home in Rock Port in 2001.
In addition to her sons, Irene is survived by two grandsons, Kent Davis and Kevin Davis; two granddaughters, Tammy Williams and Tara Sheets; three greatgrandchildren; one brother, Floyd Dunkle, Tacoma, Washington; and two sisters, Lucille Winstead and Maxine Bargman, both of Rock Port.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; four brothers, Marvin, Harold, George and Fred; and by five sisters, Mae Rowe, Blanche Neely, Florence Hindman, Ellen Swinehart and Fern Ball. Memorials may be directed to the Community Hospital Auxiliary in Fairfax.

Farley, Phyllis
Grush -
Atchison County native, Phyllis M. Farley, passed away on Friday, March 19, 2010, at Village Care Center in Maryville, MO. She was 86. Phyllis was born on September 21,1923, to Willis and Ruth Grush in Fairfax, MO.
On June 17, 1945, Phyllis married Dean Richard Farley in Hiawatha, KS. They both lived and worked on the Grush family farm south of Tarkio for several years. After Willis Grush passed away in 1949, they moved to Tarkio.
Phyllis and Pean had one son, Greg. Phyllis' husband, son, and grandkids were the loves of her life. During the time they lived in Colorado, Phyllis always enjoyed watching her grandkids play soccer. Phyllis was an amazing wife, mom, and grandma and sacrificed much for her family.
Phyllis taught Sunday school at the United Methodist Church in Tarkio for many years, and she made sure that her family members attended church regularly. When Dr. Ed Bare began his practice in Tarkio, Phyllis was the receptionist, office manager, and nurse. Many in Tarkio and the surrounding area will remember her for that, as she saw the babies Dr. Bare delivered grow up. She was at Dr. Bare's office until her retirement.
Phyllis loved her family and friends very much. Camping and fishing trips to Colorado and Canada with her beloved Aunt Mary and Uncle Newt Everett and family were her favorites. Phyllis was a great cook and loved to have big family get-togethers most anytime of the year, but especially at Christmas. She also enjoyed having many of their friends and Greg's friends over for dinners and good times. No one was a stranger and being around Phyllis was truly a joy.
Phyllis' husband, Dean, and son, Greg and his wife, Marilyn, of Durango, CO, survive Phyllis; as well as her grandchildren, Buck Farley and Andy Farley and their families of Durango; Julie Renger and husband, Evan, of Fort Collins, CO; and two great-grandchildren. A grandchild, Tamara Faith, preceded her in death. Cremation has occurred and a private family inurnment of the ashes at Tarkio Home Cemetery in Tarkio will take place at a later date.

Ferguson, E.L. "Shorty" -
E.L. "Shorty" Ferguson, 91 of Craig, died Monday, April 4, 1988, at a veterans hospital in Leavenworth, Ks.
He was born in Hiawatha, Ks. and moved to Craig early in his life. He retired as a farmer.
Mr. Ferguson served in the Army in World War I.
He was a member of the Story-Hardin Post No. 160, and he was commander of the post for several years.
In April 1919 he married the former Mary Pflaumer. She preceded him in death in Oct. 1946. He later married the former Alberta Stulp in 1948. She preceded him in death in Feb. 1982.
Surviving are: two daughters, Betty Watson, Temple, Tx.; a son, William H., Tarkio; six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.
Services were held Friday at the Craig, Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the I00F Cemetery, Craig. The American Legion Post No. 160 conducted the service.

Fries, Rosa A.
Rosa A. Fries, 84, died Sunday, Jan. 3,1988 at the Pleasant View Rest Home in Rock Port. She was born in the Mound City area, and had lived in Fairfax before moving to Rock Port. She attended the Presbyterian church in Fairfax.
She was preceded in death by two infant sisters, and two other sisters, Hazel Kriley, Minnie Boone; and one brother, Albert Fries.
Surviving are two sisters: Grace Goeson, Yuma, Ariz and Pauline King, Maryville; three brothers: Russell Fries, Denver, Colo; Ernest Fries, Fairfax; Robert Fries, Bolckow; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Tuesday afternoon at the New Liberty Cemetery, north of Mound City, conducted by Rev. Blake Richter, pastor of the Fairfax Presbyterian church.

Graham, Joseph Willard -
Joseph Willard Graham, 81, passed away Feb. 3 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port. He was born March 29, 1906 at Tarkio, the son of Joseph Andrew and Kathryne (Hughes) Graham. The Grahams lived in the Tarkio area while Bill was growing up.
He was married to Zelma Townsend, and they were the parents of two daughters. They lived in Omaha 30 years, where he worked as a carpenter and as a delivery man for Sears. He was a member of the Church of God.
Mrs. Graham passed away in April 1982. A year later, he moved to Rock Port to the Pleasant View Nursing Home.
He is survived by a daughter, Darlene, California; one sister, Essie Mutchler, Mound City; four brothers: Carl Graham, Davenport, la., Donald E. Graham, Rock Port, Cleo Graham, Tarkio, and Fred Graham, Omaha, Neb.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte Graham; a sister, Inez Graham, and two brothers, Lee and John.
Services were held Feb. 5 at the Chamberlain Funeral Home, Rock Port, conducted by Rev. Cleo Graham. Interment was at Smith Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Chamberlain Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. at the Craig High School Auditorium, Craig, Missouri, for Courtney Dae Hayworth of Craig. Rev. Rob Self officiated. Interment was made at Rochester Cemetery, Topeka, Kansas, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Craig.
Courtney Dae Hayworth, age 15, was born in Topeka, Kansas, on December 30, 1988. The family lived in Emporia, Kansas, for five years, before moving to Craig, Missouri, in 1994.
Courtney attended Craig Public Schools where she was a sophomore this year. She had been active in volleyball and basketball as well as participating in band, FFA and FCCLA. In addition to her school activities, Courtney also enjoyed music and poetry and she had been an American Legionette with American Legion Post #400 in Topeka. She had attended the Craig Church of the Nazarene. In November, 2000, she became ill and she passed away at her home in Craig last Sunday, December 5.
Courtney is survived by her parents, Terry and Misty Hayworth, of the home; and a sister, Amber Roberts, brother-in-law, Marty Bye, and niece, Grade Dae Bye, all of Craig. She is also survived by a special friend, Ryan Dujuardin; paternal grandparents, Louise and William Hayworth, Bigelow, Missouri; maternal grandparents, Sharon and Keith Cushing and Kenneth and Sandy Roberts, all of Topeka; and her maternal great-grandfather, Norman Goodman, also of Topeka. She was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandmother, Maxine Goodman; six other great-grandparents; and by two uncles, Robin Roberts and John Lundblade. Herr, Lois Mae "Jackie" Hawkins - The Lord called Lois Mae "Jackie" Herr to heaven the evening of March 27, 2012. Jackie was born Lois Mae Hawkins on May 10, 1924 to J.C.W. and Zelda (McKinney) Hawkins of Fairfax, MO. She was the youngest of four children and grew up in the Fairfax area, graduating from Fairfax High School in 1942.
Following high school, she attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, MO, graduating summa cum laude in 1946. Upon graduating, Jackie was hired at Humboldt High School and taught biology for one and a half years. During her brief teaching career in Humboldt, she met and later married Alfred Oliver Herr, a farmer northwest of Humboldt. From this marriage four children were born: Linda, Stan, Rock, and Sandy.
While her children were growing up, Jackie devoted her time to their activities such as 4H, sports, music, and more. She also square danced, served as an officer of Music Parents, and painted china. In 1979, immediately following Alfred's death, Jackie began working as a teller at the Home State Bank in Humboldt, now American National Bank. While working there, she developed lifelong friendships which she valued for the rest of her days. After many years at the bank, she retired and moved to Humboldt, and eventually to Assisted Living. Jackie was well known for her vitality, integrity, practicality, and deep abiding Christian faith. Her life was centered on Christ and the church, and she dedicated her time and energy to the United Methodist Church, UMW, Vacation Bible School, the church choir, Sunday school, and Bible study. In addition to the service she gave to the church, she embodied the Christian spirit and truly lived each day in accordance to the teachings of the Bible. Jackie was a treasured friend and relative that will be dearly missed by all whose lives she touched.
Jackie passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at the Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn, Nebraska having reached the age of 87 years, ten months, and seventeen days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Alfred, son Stan Herr, brother J.W. Hawkins; sisters, Gwen Dake and Marge Hawkins. Jackie is survived by her children: Linda Dodds and her husband Larry of Wellington, CO; Rock Herr and his wife Tina of Humboldt, NE; Sandy Potter and her husband Tom of Los Osos, CA; nine grandchildren: Luke, Ben, and Mark Dodds; Jacob, Elijah, and Austin Herr; and Samuel, Justine, and Nathan Potter; three great-grandchildren: Kyle, Wesley, and Oliver Dodds; and countless more relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 2, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastor Jaclyn Hoy officiating. Houghton, Mason - Graveside services and burial were held on Friday, August 16, 2002, at Home Cemetery in Tarkio, Missouri, for Mason M. Houghton, Tarkio. Pastor Glenn Scott officiated. Military rites were under the direction of Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199.
Mason Minor Houghton was born May 6, 1919, in Kingston, Missouri, the son of Wayne J. and Verna (Folker) Houghton. He passed away at his home near Tarkio on August 13, 2002, at the age of 83 years.
Mason received his schooling in the Houghton School in Kingston; rural school in Mirable, Missouri, and York, Nebraska; and the Tarkio, Missouri, schools. During 1937, Mason moved to rural Savannah, Missouri, and farmed for a few years.
On January 8,1942, Mason enlisted in the United States Navy. He courageously served his country overseas in Russia, England, Ireland and the South Pacific. Prior to his honorable discharge on October 18, 1945, Mason received a special commendation from Eleanor Roosevelt for his service to his country.
On April 13,1943, Mason was united in marriage to Georgia Marie Boatright in Kansas City, Missouri. Following his discharge from the Navy, Mason and Georgia moved to the Tarkio community and have farmed to the time of his death.
Mason was a member of the United Methodist Church of Kingston, the Agriculture Extension Board and the North Star Lodge #157, A.F. & A.M., of Rock Port, Missouri.
Mason is survived by his wife, Georgia, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Ned Seymour, Tarkio; son and daughter-in-law, Darwin and Georgia Houghton, Tarkio; granddaughter, Lori Seymour, Columbia, Missouri; and grandson, Trevor Houghton, Grand Island, Nebraska.
Preceding Mason in death were his parents, Wayne and Verna. Memorials may be directed to the Tarkio Home Cemetery Association or the First Baptist Church in Tarkio.

Grace Belle Mullins Howard, 87, of Spanish Lake Nursing Center, Florissant, Mo. died April 3, 1988 at 7:00 p.m. Mrs. Howard mother of. Betty Lee McClammer Bane suffered a stroke on March 4, 1988 and never recovered. Mrs Howard was born December 29, 1900 in Marietta, Ga. to Leonidas Hollingsworth and Louisa Susannah Crabtree Mullins. Mrs. Howard's father was the prosecuting attorney of Atchison County at the time of his death in 1935.
Mrs. Howard married George T: McClammer of Fayette, Mo. in 1921. Their only child is Betty Lee McClammer Bane of Florissant, Mo. Mrs. Howard was Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star No. 373 in Fairfax, also a member of the Ferguson United

Mrs. Howard is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Campbell and Mary Warnstaff, both of Fairfax. Her only daughter Betty Lee and son-in-law Loren Edwin Bane of Florissant. Hughes, Rudolph Edward -
Rudolph Edward Hughes, Fairfax, was born at Northboro, la. on Sept. 8, 1911 and died Jan. 2, 1988 at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital, Omaha, Nebr. at the age of 76 years, 3 months and 24 days.
He was one of ten children of Charlie and Kate Carr Hughes. In July 1938 he was married to Mabel Brindle of the Nishnabotna area. They raised his two sons of a previous marriage. Mabel passed away in 1985.
On May 8, 1986 he was married to Mary Seymour of Fairfax, and since then they have made their home in Fairfax.
He was an employee of the Fairfax Elevator in Fairfax for 35 years.
Mr. Hughes was a member of the Church of God church, Craig, and his interests included farming, fishing, repairing clocks and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Mary of the home in Fairfax; son, Edward Lee Hughes, Rock Port;
five grandchildren, Edward L. Hughes II, Burlington Jet; Steven Hughes, Rock Port; Leann Hughes Brennaman, King City; Russell Hughes and Rick Hughes, both of Central, S. Car.; three great grandchildren, Jasmine and Jade Hughes, Burlington Jet; Jennifer Brennaman, King City; four step sons: Raymond Seymour, Mountain Grove; Melvin Seymour, Kansas City; Edward Seymour, Mountain Grove; Glen Seymour, Carbondale, Ks; nine step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; three sisters: Rosie McCall, Fairfax; Laura Cline, Buffalo; Maude Lee, Eugene, Ore.; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mabel, son Russell Wayne; grandson, David; three sisters, Lucy Freeman, Edna Brandt, Viola Haws; three brothers, Everett, Wilbur and Orley Hughes.

Hulett, Randall James -
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26, 2005, at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home, Leon, Iowa, for Randall James Hulett. Interment was made in Leon Cemetery, Leon.
Randall James Hulett, age 43, of Leon, the son of Harold James and Mary Margaret (Mortimore) Hulett, was born on December 12, 1961, in Shenandoah, Iowa. He died at his home in Leon on Friday, October 21, 2005.
Randy started elementary school in Maryville, Missouri. He then continued at Rock Port, Missouri, until his junior year where he attended Fairfax High School. He graduated from South Harrison Schools in Bethany, Missouri, in 1980. He loved sports and was All-Conference line backer his senior year. He then took a break from school to work. He later graduated from Southwestern Community College with a degree in computer drafting.
In May 1986, Randy married Traci Dawn Rossi whom he met in college. They lived in Maryville, where daughters, Jessica and Miranda were both born. Later they moved to Bethany, and then lived in Lamoni, Iowa, when son, Cole, was born. Blake was born in Des Moines, Iowa.
In 1996, Randy married Carolyn Jones Newberry. He became the stepfather to Stacy,Amy, Scott and Mark Newberry.
While at Northwest, Randy served in the ROTC. He joined the Army National Guard's Maryville unit. He later transferred to Clarinda, Iowa, and then to Council Bluffs, Iowa, serving a total of seven years.
Randy loved his family. He also loved nature, sports, bow hunting, walking streams, fantasy football and baseball, playing, watching and talking football and baseball, and the season of fall. Randy never lost, he just didn't win yet. He assisted coaching little league baseball and soccer. He was a hard worker and was currently employed at Vinylite Windows in Leon. He was baptized at a young age and was a lifelong member of Watson Baptist Church in Watson, Missouri.
Preceding him in death were his grandfathers, Louis Hulett, Roy Mortimore and David Kirk; brother, Richard Hulett; and infant nephew, Joshua Hulett.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Hulett of Leon; parents, Harold and Julia Hulett, Columbia, Missouri, and Mary and Gary Frohn, Fairfax; children, Jessica, Miranda, Cole and Blake Hulett and their mother, Tracy Hulett, Des Moines; stepchildren, Stacy Smith and husband, Randy, Amy, Scott and Mark Newberry; brothers, Jeff, Robert, and Francis Hulett and Bryan and Jason Frohn; grandmothers, Eva Hulett and Mildred Kirk, both of Rock Port, Missouri; uncles, Melvin, Gary and David Hulett; nieces and nephews; close friends: Mike Rodriguez, Terry Payton and Jim Cook, his friend and mentor; and other relatives and friends.

Irvine, James A. -
Graveside service and burial were held on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, for James A. Irvine, Fairfax, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax. Rev. Mike Eighmy officiated.
Jim was born on a farm in rural Dale Township on June 20,1920. He was one of eight children born to Hamilton A. and Maude (McElroy) Irvine. Jim attended Wolfe Country School and graduated from Daleview High School in 1937. He also attended Maryville State Teachers' College.
On September 6, 1940, Jim was united in marriage to Marian Carter in Maryville, Missouri. They became the parents of one son, James D. Irvine. Jim and Marian farmed in the Daleview community and, in 1944 and 1945, they lived in Omaha, Nebraska, until Jim entered military service during World War II. While Jim was in the U.S. Army, he was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he was in charge of the athletic programs for the fort. He supervised several different sports, organized teams, and made tournament schedules. After retiring from the army, Jim and Marian made their home in Fairfax where Jim operated a Mobile service station. Later Jim began farming again and followed this occupation until his retirement.
Jim was a member of the Fairfax Lodge #483 AF & AM, Fairfax Optimist Club, and John Richards Post #284 American Legion. Jim passed away at his residence in Fairfax on Saturday, June 26, 2010.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Marian; brothers, John, Francis "Spud", Robert and Harry; and sisters, Mary Esther Botkin and Lola Folden. Jim is survived by his son, James D. Irvine and wife, Johny, Rock Port, Missouri; one sister, Helen Knepper, Des Moines, Iowa; and grandchildren, Todd Irvine and wife, Monica, Savannah, Missouri, and Jamie Freemyer and husband, Jared, Fairfax. Ilsley, Nola Deloris Pierce -
Nola Deloris Ilsley, Fairfax, Missouri, died March 28, 2012, at the age of 82. The daughter of Calvin and Eva Pierce, she was born February 27,1930 in her Langdon, Missouri, home.
During World War II, she attended South High at Omaha, Nebraska. She graduated from Rock Port High School and attended the former Tarkio College. Later, she worked at General Electric Supply Corp. in Kansas City.
On January 13, 1951, she married James Ilsley at the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port. For almost 40 years, she and Jim lived in their farm home south of Fairfax. After the death of her husband, she moved into town and lived the rest of her life in her Fairfax home.
Nola was active in the
Fairfax First Presbyteris Church, serving as the Junior Sunday School Class teacher, Elder, and Deacon. She was also a member the Nite Owl Bible Study Group, and Presbyterian Women, in which she was an officer. She enjoyed life traveling and being a member of the 49'ers Hobby Club, Sorosis, Tamasha Card Party Book Club, and Hob Nob.
Besides her parents, Nola was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, and brother Marlin Pierce, Lowell Pierce and Elvin Pierce. She is survived by her daughter April and son-in-law Jim Stone of Fairfax; son Bill Ilsley of Fairfax; and daughter Dawn and son-in-law Roger Pearson of Agency, Missouri; and nine grandchildren: Melinda Makings, Dustin Stoner, Andrea Ilsley, Chase Ilsley, Denver Ilsley, Corissa Reinke, Adrian Pearson, Michelle Pierce, and Lacy Pearson.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 31 2012, at the Fairfax First Presbyterian Church, with Pastor John Welch presiding. Burial was at Home Cemetery, Tarkio, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the Fairfax First Presbyterian Church or to Community Hospital-Fairfax. Services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home Fairfax.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1, 2004, at the Fairfax Baptist Church for Willis DeWayne Johnson of Fairfax, Missouri. Masonic services by Fairfax Lodge #483 AF&AM, Fairfax, were conducted on Tuesday evening, November 30,2004. Interment was made at English Grove Cemetery in Fairfax. Military rites were under the auspices of John Richards American Legion Post 284, Fairfax. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port, Missouri.
Willis DeWayne Johnson, the son of Samuel Maurice and Stella Henrietta (Jennings) Johnson, was born April 9,1929, in Palmer, Nebraska. He passed away Sunday, November 28,2004, at Bryan LGH East Hospital, Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 75 years. DeWayne attended the Golden View and Valley View country schools in the Watson, Missouri, area, then began farming with his father. In the late 1940s, the family purchased and moved to a farm east of Fairfax, in the Elk Dale community.
On October 14, 1950, DeWayne was united in marriage to Betty Jane Cooper in the First English Lutheran Church, St. Joseph, Missouri, by Pastor Reno R. Frobenius. They made their home on the Johnson family farm. In 1997, they moved to Fairfax where they lived to the present time. On October 14, 2004, they celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.
In March of 1951, DeWavne was drafted by the United States Army and served his country overseas in the Korean War. On October 4,1956, he received his honorable discharge as a sergeant and returned to Fairfax to continue farming. In June of 1966, DeWayne was employed by the United States Postal Service. He worked in the mail room and as a rural mail carrier in Fairfax and Craig, Missouri, retiring in 1995. Although he loved to farm, his life revolved around his children, grandchildren and other family and friends. DeWayne was a soft spoken man of his word. His word was better than any written contract.
DeWayne was a member of the John Richards American Legion Post #284, Fairfax, and the Fairfax Lodge #483 AF&AM. He was also a member of the Fairfax Baptist Church and had served as a Deacon and Sunday School Secretary. He was a member of the National Farmers' Organization and the American Postal Workers.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, of their home in Fairfax; one son, Gary Johnson and his wife, Debbie, Fairfax; two daughters, Debbie Lutz and her husband, Richard, Rock Port, and Nancy Jill Johnson Dougherty and her husband, John, Craig, Missouri; five grandsons, Toby Lutz, Rock Port, Evan Lutz, Fort Collins, Colorado, Clay Johnson, Fairfax, and Brett Johnson and Jacob Dougherty, Craig; one granddaughter, Kelly Dougherty, Craig; two brothers and their wives, Gilbert and Jenny Johnson, Fairfax, and Dean and Eva Johnson, Mound City, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, DeWayne was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil Johnson and Jesse Everett Johnson; three sisters, Ruby Holmes, Lois Hinkle and Edith Drake; three nieces, Jessica Johnson, Sue Finley, and Vera Dowdy; and one nephew, Bill Holmes. Memorials may be directed to the Fairfax Baptist Church or the Atchison County Memorial Building Foundation.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at 10:30 a.m., at the Presbyterian Church in Craig, Missouri, for Wilma M. Johnson of Mound City, Missouri. The services were conducted by Rev. David Seward and there was a private family interment at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig, Missouri. Funeral services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax, Missouri.
Wilma Wright Johnson was born in the "Ross Grove" neighborhood, five miles north of Mound City, Missouri, on September 30, 1917. She was the daughter of Paul B. and Marie (Nauman) Zachary.
In 1932 the family moved to a farm in the "Lonesome" neighborhood. Wilma graduated from Bellevue High School in 1935, and, on June 9, 1940, she became the wife of Wilbur Wright. Wilbur died in a plane crash in France in 1944, during World War II.
On August 4, 1946, Wilma was married to John Forrest Johnson and, in 1953, she joined him in employment at the Rickel Grain Elevator in Craig, Missouri, where she was the office manager and bookkeeper for 27 years.
Wilma was a member of the Craig Presbyterian Church, Craig, Missouri, where she assumed various responsibilities. A main concern of Wilma's was the welfare of others. She took special joy in family gatherings and having an active part in her grandchildren's lives.
Wilma passed away at Tiffany Heights Care Center in Mound City, Missouri, on Saturday, May 7, 2005. She is survived by her husband, Forrest Johnson; one son, Dennis B. and wife, Lillian, Wright; sister, Elisabeth Sharp; four grandchildren, Melanie and husband, Mark Brandon, Wendel and wife, Carol, Wright, Alyssa and husband, Jamie Barnes, and Jade and wife, Pepe, Wright; and one great-grandchild, Garrett Barnes. Graveside services and interment were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2004, at Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port, Missouri, for Larry Eugene Lutz, Rock Port. Larry Harbin conducted the services. Military rites were under the auspices of the Ralph Greer American Legion Post #49, Rock Port.
Larry Eugene Lutz was born on February 1,1942, on a farm north of Rock Port, Missouri, to Charles Edward and Mary Elsie Wallace Lutz. He passed away on Wednesday morning, January 7, 2004, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port at the age of 61 years. He graduated from Rock Port R-II High School in 1961. He married Ronda Haer in August, 1973. To that union two daughters were born, Jaclyn Kaye and Jamie Lynn. The couple later divorced. Larry served his country from 1966 to 1968 in the U.S. Army including a tour of duty in Vietnam where he served as a motor pool and aircraft technician. He worked on the farm for Donald Graves before and after his time in the service. He went to work at Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah, Iowra, in 1981, as a machinist and worked there until he retired in 2002.
Larry was a very outgoing person. He loved almost anything that had to do with outdoors. Among the many things he enjoyed were hunting, shooting clay pigeons, pitching horseshoes, fishing, watching and talking about stock car races, cooking out, and visiting with family and friends under the maple tree in the back yard. He particularly enjoyed the Lutz and Wallace family reunions during the summers when growing up.
Larry was a life member of the Ralph Greer American Legion Post #49 of Rock Port. He spent almost his entire life in northwest Missouri except for a brief period when the family lived near Indianola, Iowa, when he was very young.

Martin, Mary S. Mires -
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 22, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Fairfax, MO, for Mary S. Martin, Maryville, MO, formerly of Fairfax. Rev. Mike Eighmy and Pastor George St. German officiated. Burial was held in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Mary was one of 11 children born to Sam and Viola Mires. She was born and raised on a farm west of Fairfax. Mary attended Irish Grove Rural School. After attending high school, Mary worked at the Kemerling Cafe in Fairfax.
In 1947, Mary became the wife of Charles Raymond Martin, Sr. The Martins made their home in Wilcox, MO, and Burlington Junction, MO, before returning to Fairfax in 1963. Mr. and Mrs. Martin were the parents of four children. Mr. Martin preceded his wife in death in 1979. For the past two years, Mary had lived in Maryville. She passed away at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, on Thursday, March 18, 2010.
Mary is survived by three sons, Charles Raymond Martin, Jr., and wife, Bette, Lathrop, Missouri, Steven Wayne Martin and wife, Diane, Galveston, Indiana, and Ronnie Martin and wife, Jayne, Tarkio, Missouri; a daughter, Joyce Scott and husband, James, Hopkins, Missouri; two brothers, Fred Mires, St. Joseph, Missouri, and Vernie Mires, Westminster, California; three sisters, Oley Jeffries and Debbie Radke, both of St. Joseph, and Charlene Dye, Waterloo, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, Presley, Bob and twins, Floyd and Lloyd; and by a sister, Betty Jean Mires.
During her lifetime, Mary enjoyed cooking for her family, canning produce from her garden and quilting. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Memorials may be directed to the Mary S. Mather, June Avis Powell - June Avis Mather, the daughter of Earl and Zouella (Wiley) Powell was born August 25, 1921 in Stockton, Missouri. She attended West Bend Country School in Rock Port, Missouri to the eighth grade.
In 1942 June was united in marriage to Virgil E. Mather and they became the parents of ten children. They were divorced in 1966. June worked as a waitress at the Tumble Inn in Tarkio and the Tarkio Nutrition Center where she retired in 1990. June passed away Saturday, July 14, 2012, surrounded by her family at her home in Tarkio at the age of 90.
Besides her parents, June is preceded in death by one granddaughter, Stacie Mather Knop; grandparents, William and Hattie Powell and Luke and Margret Wiley; brothers, Williard and Norman Powell and sister, Eunice Fletcher. Graveside services and burial were held at 2 p.m. at Tarkio Home Cemetery in Tarkio on Monday September 20, 2004, for Kevin Dennis McQuinn of Flower Mound, Texas. Pastor Glenn Scott officiated. Services were arranged by Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio.
Kevin Dennis McQuinn, age 47, passed away at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday, September 15, 2004. He was born June 2, 1957, in Independence, Missouri, to Janell D. (Simons) and Don D. McQuinn. Kevin graduated from Butler, Missouri, High School in 1975 and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia for one year. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity.
Kevin was currently living in Flower Mound, Texas, and was employed in automotive sales. He was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church, Independence, Missouri.
Survivors include Kevin's parents, Don D. and Janell D. Mitchell, Leora Harmes -
Funeral services were held on Friday, December 3, 2004, at 10 a.m. at the Tarkio Presbyterian Church, Tarkio, Missouri, for Leora H. Mitchell, formerly of Tarkio. Services
were conducted by Rev. Roger Manley. Interment was at English Grove Cemetery, Fairfax, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Leora Mitchell was born November 25,1909, in the English Grove Church community three miles west of Fairfax to Harmon H. and Maggie Mensen Harmes.
Leora grew up in the home where she was born and attended Irish Grove School for 11 years. She attended Fairfax High School her senior year and graduated with the class of 1927. She attended a School of Nursing in St. Joseph, Missouri, for a short time.
On May 15, 1936, Leora was united in marriage to Merrill Wayne Mitchell, who also lived west of Fairfax. To this union, three daughters were born. Merrill and Leora made their home west of Fairfax where they raised their family and farmed.
After their retirement in 1975, the Mitchells moved to Big Lake, Missouri. They resided at Big Lake until 1984, at which time they purchased a home in Tarkio.
Merrill passed away in 1992, and Leora continued to live in her home in Tarkio until May, 1996. Leora then moved into Northview Manor in Tarkio for almost eight years. In March, 2004, she moved to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, to be close to her family there.
Leora was a member of the Tarkio Presbyterian Church, the United Presbyterian Women's Organization, Keenagers, Young at Heart, and the OATS Association. She and Merrill volunteered in Mound City and Tarkio by delivering food to people for Meals on Wheels.
Leora thoroughly enjoyed her family and loved the fellowship when they were all together. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She was verv close to her nieces and
nephews and always enjoyed a family get-together with them.
Survivors include three daughters, Merrilyn Ray, and husband, Ron, of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Rita White, and husband, Tim, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Judy Poore, and husband, Charlie, of McDonald, Kansas; eight grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, Merrill, Leora was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred Harmes, George Harmes, and Dick Harmes; and two sisters, Marguerite Jenkins and Mary Graves. She was the last remaining member of the family. Memorials may be directed to the Tarkio Presbyterian Church.

Miller, William
Mr. and Mrs. Wendele Wasserfallen received word of the death of their friend, William T. Miller of Bayonne, New Jersey. Wm. T. died Dec. 31, 1987 in the Rarway Hospital in New Jersey. Services were held Jan. 5 with burial in Union, New Jersey.
William T. or Billy Ted as he was affectionately called by the Fairfax friends and neighbors was born in Fairfax Dec. 6, 1922 and died Dec. 31, 1987 at the age of 65 years and 25 days. He attended school 12 years in Fairfax and graduated class of 1940. He and his wife, Connie, and children owned and operated two florist shops in New Jersey.
His parents, James and Nina Miller, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Connie of the home at 5 Ramrapo Court, Apt. IB, Bayonne, N. J. 07002; his son and daughter, David William Miller, Bayonne, N.J.; Sandra, Mrs. Henry Glenn of St Cloud, Fla. and seven grandchildren.

Moore, Hazel Rutherford -
Hazel Moore, Fairfax, Missouri, passed away July 10, 2012, at the age of 102 years, 11 months, 22 days. She was born July 18,1909, in Gaynor, Missouri, to Henry L. and Bertha Mae Rutherford. She was raised in Burlington Junction, Missouri, graduated from Burlington Junction High School, and attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri. She taught in the rural schools of Nodaway County.
On April 20, 1930, she was united in marriage to Charles L. Moore at her parents' home in Burlington Junction. They moved to Fairfax in 1931. Three children were born to this union.
Hazel was a homemaker and loved to sew, knit, and crochet. She was also an avid china painter. She was very active in the Fairfax Christian Church, serving as Secretary to the Board for seven years, teaching Sunday School classes, cooking or helping in other ways. Hazel had also served on the Christian Church State Board, and was an honorary member of the Fairfax Christian Church Board at the time of her death. Hazel was a 50-year member of O.E.S., serving as Worthy Matron three times, District Deputy Grand Matron, and Grand Representative to the District of Columbia. Hazel was also active in Sorosis, Community Hospital Auxiliary, and the Historical Society.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Charlie; one sister; one brother; one son, Henry Moore, Cassville, Missouri; one son-in-law, John Newberg; and three grandsons.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Helen Newberg of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Mrs. Sarah Lawrence and her husband, Deene of Fairfax, Missouri; nine grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, and a daughter-in-law, Sylvia Moore of Branson, Missouri.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 14,2012, at the Christian Church in Fairfax, conducted by Rev. Larry Gray. Burial was at the

Elmer Issac (Ike) Nowling, 93, passed away on June 14,2004, at Village Care Center in Maryville, Missouri. Ike was born on February 23, 1911, in Fillmore, Missouri, but lived his life in Craig. He was the son of Edger and Mary Jane (Wardlow) Nowling.
Ike was a farmer almost all of his life. He loved animals, gardening, and loved to be around the table talking to family and friends while drinking a cup of coffee and eating Laura's cookies. He loved to be around his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ike also mowed yards almost all of his life up to 4 years ago.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; a daughter, Linda Kay Nowling; two brothers, Jack and Floyd (Punch) Nowling; three sisters, Grace Nowling, Lizzie Odgen, and Flossie Carmichael; a grandson, Joseph Wilson; and two great-granddaughters, Tamisha Ann and Jasmine Kay Mutchler.
He is survived by two sons, Orvel Nowling of Battle Creek, Michigan, and James Nowling of Forest City, Missouri; two daughters, Margaret Wells of St. Joseph, Missouri and Laura Mutchler Craig; 12 grandchildren; two step granddaughters; 17 great-grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rick, age 41, is the son of Bea Paris and the late Jim 0. Paris. He attended Fairfax R-3 School and graduated in 1979. He was employed by Smith Farms. He loved to hunt, fish, work on the farm and drill water wells. He passed away on the job doing what he loved.
Rick was preceded in death by his father, Jim Paris; and both sets of grandparents.
Rick is survived by his two daughters, Nicole Lee Paris, Fairfax, and Amber Lynn Paris, Marionville, Missouri; his mother, Bea Paris, Fairfax; two sisters, Betty Hendrix and Traci Burke, both of Fairfax; two brothers, Jimmy Paris, Fairfax, and Randy Paris, Rock Port, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews. Charles L. "Charlie" Phelps, Jr., 36, Eureka, Missouri, died Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at a hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Services for Mr. Phelps were held at 3 p.m., on Saturday, October 29, 2005, at Meierhoffer Funeral Home and Crematory in St. Joseph, Missouri. Interment was made in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Phelps was born June 25, 1969, in Fairfax, Missouri. He lived the past ten years in New York City, New York. Mr. Phelps had been employed as a Flight Attendant with Jet Blue Airlines since 2001.
Survivors include Mr. Phelps' mother, Darlene Phelps Miller and stepfather, Bill, of St. Joseph; two brothers, Curtis Phelps and wife, Chale, of Eureka, Missouri, and Jim Phelps and wife, Lori, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; sister, Shelly Graham and husband, Phil, of Tarkio, Missouri; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services for D. A. Price of Fairfax was held Monday afternoon, Aug. 31 [1987] at the Presbyterian church in Fairfax with Rev. Blake Richter in charge. Interment was in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax.
Thalia Beck was in charge of music and she accompanied Margaret Graves, who sang, "Beyond the Sunset" and "You Light Up My Life".
Pallbearers were Allen Bowman, Don Thaden, Wayne Harrington, Don Ingram, Phil Ingram and Jay Burge.

Dillard Allen Price was born near Fairfax Feb. 28, 1912 the son of Floyd C. and Elma E. Davis Price and died at Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Nebr. Aug. 28, 1987 at the age of 75 years and 6 months.
He grew up in the Fairfax community and attended school here and was a member of the
Fairfax First Presbyterian Church.
On Feb. 7,1934 he married Mildred L. Brickey and they were parents of three daughters, Delores, Wanda and Sharon.
Over the years D. A had worked as a hired hand and a self employed trucker. In later years, he was employed at the Fairfax Manufacturing Co. and retired from there in 1975. For over 35 years he kept records and read the Tarkio River level and for this he received a 35 year service pin.
He was preceded in death by his parehts; one brother, Richard E. Price in 1983; one grandson, Lewis Arlin Shipley in 1957.
Survivors include the wife, Mildred of the home in Fairfax; three daughters, Mrs. Lewis (Delores) Shipley, Arnold, Nebr.; Mrs. Don (Wanda) Thaden, Marlin, Tex.; and Sharon Ingram, Tarkio; one sister, Lorene Van Pelt, Fairfax; 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Ray, Margaret Louise Dunkelberger
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 19,2004, at the Baptist Church in Fairfax, for Margaret L. Ray, Tarkio, Missouri, formerly of Fairfax. Rev. Steve Suttill officiated. Interment was made in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Margaret Louise (Dunkelberger) Ray was born to Earl and Mary Dunkelberger, on February 21, 1920, in her parents' home, northeast of Mound City, Missouri, She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Marshall and Francis. Her younger sister, Mary Wilson, lives near Mound City. Margaret married R. Don Ray on July 23, 1946. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. Don Ray, who passed away in late 1989. They were married for 43 years.
Margaret attended South Center Community School and Mound City High
School, graduating in 1939. She attended Castors School of Cosmetology in St. Joseph, Missouri, and was a beautician for nearly 30 years. In later years she worked at Palmer Pharmacy and Rogers Pharmacy before retiring.
She is survived by two sons, Donald L., Fairfax, and Frank from Jonesborough, Tennessee; two daughters-in-law, Leona and Phyllis Ray; three grandchildren, Morris Ray, Roger Ray and Suzanne Marriott. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Tanton Ray, Mitchel Ray, Tyler Ray, Tristan Ray, Alexa Marriott and Ava Marriott.
She was a member of and attended the Fairfax Baptist Church prior to moving to Northview Manor in Tarkio, Missouri, in late 1997. Memorials may be directed to Northview Manor Care Center, Tarkio, or to the Fairfax Baptist Church.

Schaeffer, Florence Pauline Whipple - Florence Pauline Schaeffer, 93, Stanberry, formerly of Fairfax, Missouri, passed away Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Northwest Medical Center in Albany, Missouri.
Florence Pauline (Whipple) Schaffer, the daughter of Lloyd Robert and Lula Marie (Burtnett) Whipple, was born in Holt County, Missouri on July 19, 1916. She departed this life on the 24th of April, 2010 after a lengthy illness at the Albany hospital. Florence had called Pine View Manor “home†since November 6, 2000. She had attained the age of 93 years, 10 months and 5 days.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband, her mother and father, and four of her sisters, as well as several of her nephews and cousins. She is survived by her sister, Mary Sharp of Dayton, Ohio and her brother, Robert Whipple and his wife, Peggy of Lubbock, Texas; cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Florence was married to Raymond L. Schaffer on February 26, 1934. They were married for 52 ½ years before his passing. Although she had no children of her own, there were always pictures in her purse and on her dresser of all her nieces, nephews and friends’ children. When you stopped in to see her, she always asked, “How are the children?â€
Aunt Florence loved the out of doors. She loved the birds, the flowers and she loved to go fishing when she was able. She also liked to cook. Florence used to make the most delicious cakes, cookies, candies and jello salads. Aunt Florence also loved her “home†at Pine View. She thought of all the people there as her family. We will miss her greeting as we came through the door and asked her how she was feeling. No matter how bad she felt or how much pain she may have been feeling at the time, she always said, “Pretty good for an Old Lady.â€

Alvin Wayne Schooler, 84, passed away Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at Beverly Health Care Center, Maryville, Missouri, which he entered in June of 2001. He was born to Bion B. and Mattie E. Schooler on October 11,1920, and was a lifelong resident of the Fairfax community. He graduated from Fairfax High School with the Class of 1938.
On May 18, 1946, Alvin was married to Jean Walker at the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port, Missouri, and they made their home on a farm east of Fairfax, where they lived their entire married life.
Wayne was a lifelong farmer and formed a farming partnership with his brother Floyd, until his retirement in 1986 due to poor health. He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he graduated from National Electric School, Los Angeles, California, and was an instructor in an anti-aircraft school. He served one year in Germany. He was a member of the Fairfax United Methodist Church and American Legion John Richard Post #284.
Wayne was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed having coffee, visiting, and "swapping" stories with the boys at the local restaurants.
Surviving are Jean, Alvin's wife, of the home; two daughters, Ann Cothern, and husband, Ray, of Chillicothe, Missouri, and Jane Hausman, and husband, Mark, of St. Joseph, Missouri; seven grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; one sister, Loraine Pierson, Shenandoah, Iowa; and one brother, Floyd Schooler, Fairfax.
Preceding Alvin in death were his parents; one sister, Ramona Schooler; and one brother, Dale Schooler. Memorials may be directed to United Methodist Church in Fairfax.

Sillers, Charles James "C.J." -
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Fairfax, MO, for Charles James (C.J.) Sillers, Jr., of Fairfax. Rev. Mike Eighmy officiated. Burial was made in Walkup Grove Cemetery, Fairfax, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Charles James (C.J.) Sillers, Jr., age 55, passed away on Saturday, March 27,2010, from a long and courageous battle with cancer. C.J. was born in Fairfax on June 18, 1954, to Charles and Elizabeth (Vandiver) Sillers. C.J. was raised on the family farm of which he was the fifth generation. He was a lifelong resident of Fairfax and attended Fairfax High School.
C.J. married Kathy (Kretchmer) Armentrout on
August 27, 1971. Two children were born of the marriage. C.J. later married Deb (DeJong) Sillers on March 20, 1985, and welcomed two stepchildren. They recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
C.J. will long be remembered for his fast cars, big motorcycles and wild horses, as well as his love of boating and appreciation of a well-made gun. He loved his land and was an avid supporter of protecting it and the surrounding areas. C.J. believed in organic farming and protecting the environment. He was especially proud of his buffalo herd that he started in 2001.
C.J. was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Deb; and his children, Christina (Bryan) Marrison, Chad Sillers, Michael DeJong and Chance Sillers; his grandchildren, Cheyann and Ryan Marrison, Jetta and Carsyn Sillers, and Kendall and Dutch (Michael, Jr.) DeJong. C.J. was a wonderful husband and father with an exuberance for life. Those
that knew him would agree that he was a much larger man on the inside than he appeared on the outside. Memorials may be directed to the C.J. Sillers Memorial Fund.

Simpson, Ellen Hays - Ellen Simpson, the daughter of Arlo Cornelius and Mary L. (Weston) Hays, was born April 28, 1928, in Watson, Missouri. She attended the Mayflower Country School northwest of Rock Port, and graduated from Rock Port High School in 1948.
On December 19, 1949, Ellen was united in marriage to Harry Thompson and they became the parents of one son, James H. Harry passed away September 10, 1956. On March 18, 1966, Ellen was united in marriage to Floyd Simpson in Burlington Junction, Missouri. Floyd passed away in 2000.
As a young woman, Ellen was employed as a telephone switchboard operator in Maryville, Missouri. She then worked at Kerr’s Grocery Store and Wayne Jones Laundry in Fairfax, Missouri. For twenty years, Ellen was employed as a sales clerk at Thiesfield’s Clothing, also in Fairfax. Ellen faithfully cared for her mother and husband, Floyd, in their final years. Ellen passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012 at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, at the age of 84.
Ellen was a member of the United Methodist Church, Fairfax, the Fairfax Quilt Guild and the Community Hospital Auxiliary. She loved sewing quilts for the hospital to give away at many area events.

Thompson and his wife, Dana, Fairfax, stepdaughter, Shirley McAdams and her husband, Bob, Tarkio; four grandchildren, Jayme Thompson, Florissant, Missouri, Craig (Melissa) McAdams, Tarkio, Curtis (Megan) McAdams, Maryville, Missouri, Aaron (Chelsey) McAdams, Shenandoah, Iowa; six great grandchildren, Jade, Gage, Sloane, Sutton, Kaylee and Kolbe; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Monday, April 11, 2005, for Bernadine Slemons, age 75, of Hilmar, California. Interment was in National Cemetery in California. She passed away on Friday, April 8, 2005, at St. Francis Assisted Care Center in Turlock, California.
Bernadine was born on June 16, 1929, to Elnio and Edith Inglish near Jefferson City, Missouri. On November 28, 1947, she married John Slemons in Maryville, Missouri. John and Bernadine lived in the Fairfax and Westboro, Missouri, areas until moving to California in 1960. Bernadine was a telephone operator and later, after moving to California, worked as an operator with a medical answering service.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. Survivors include her husband, John, of Hilmar; two daughters, Barbara, and her husband, Bill Prado, Brentwood, California, and Beverly Scroggins, Fresno, California; four grandchildren; three great-grandsons; three sisters-in-law, Mary Graves, Marcia Martin and Peggy Slemons, one brother-in-law, Junior Slemons, ail of Fairfax; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 21, 2004, at the Baptist Church in Fairfax, Missouri, for Earl Alpha Sons of Tarkio. Pastor Steve Suttill officiated. Services were under the direction of Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio.
Earl Alpha Sons, age 95, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2004, at Northview Manor in Tarkio. He was born on March 30, 1909, in Rock Port, Missouri, to Agnes L. (Underwood) and Dennis Noel Sons. Earl attended New Liberty Country School, northeast of Rock Port, and graduated from Rock Port High School in 1928. For a short time, Earl worked on the family farm and, in 1930, moved to Tarkio, Missouri, and was employed by the Missouri State Highway Department and the Tarkio Elevator.
On August 5, 1934, Earl was united in marriage to
Olga M. Proffitt in Tarkio, at the home of Rev. T.M. Grimmett. They had two children, Gary and Kathy. Earl was then employed by E.J. Hopkins as an auto mechanic and later by George Knepper. He then worked for George Johnson for 17 years, for Harry Wright Motor Co. for three years, and for Ryland Coe Super Chevrolet for 12 years. Earl retired in 1973 to care for Olga, who had been in an automobile accident, and to manage her flower shop in Tarkio. Olga passed away on July 20, 1974. Earl managed the flower shop for one year and then returned to work as a mechanic from his home. He retired in 1997.
On June 17,1976, Earl was united in marriage to Helen Davenport at the Fairfax Baptist Church. Helen passed away on December 15, 2002.
Earl was a member of the Fairfax Baptist Church and was a Deacon. He participated in Scouting for 30 years and had earned the Silver Beaver Award. Earl was an avid fisherman and loved to play the harmonica.
Survivors include one son, Gary L. Sons, and his wife, Lola Mae, Shenandoah, Iowa; one daughter, Kathy (Sons) Pennington, Florida; four grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren; two stepdaughters, Leona Ray, Fairfax, and Joyce Springer, Tarkio; four stepgrandsons; five step great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Sons, Kansas City, Missouri; sister-in-law, Dorothy Proffitt, Kansas City, Kansas; and brother-in-law, T.D. Proffitt, Jr., and his wife, Pat, California.

Helen Eliza (Stephens) Davenport Sons, daughter of Mattie Pearl and James Elbert Stephens, was born in Fairfax on May 16,1910. She grew up in Atchison County and attended school at Irish Grove, Valley View and Rock Port. Helen passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2002, at the Community Hospital, Fairfax, MO, at the age of 92 years.
On July 27, 1929, Helen was united in marriage to Earl Fred Davenport of Fairfax. To this union two daughters were born, Joyce (Hedrick) Springer and Leona Ray.
After the death of her first husband, Earl Davenport, in 1970, Helen was united in marriage to Earl Alpha Sons on June 27, 1976, and spent her remaining years at their home and North view Manor in Tarkio, Missouri.
Helen was baptized into the fellowship of the Fairfax Baptist Church on November 6, 1933. She served as the first Vice President of the Women's Missionary Union when it was organized in 1937. Helen continued to serve as song leader, teacher, and in many other positions within the church as long as her health would allow. Helen and Earl continued to serve the church as Prayer Warriors. Many requested their prayers.
Helen is survived by her husband, Earl Sons, Northview Manor, Tarkio; two daughters, Joyce Springer and husband, Bill, of Tarkio, and Leona Ray and husband, Donald (Ferd), Fairfax, Missouri; one stepson, Gary Sons and wife, Lola Mae, Shenandoah, Iowa; two brothers, Herbert Stephens, Fairfax, and Warren Stephens, Fallbrook, California; four grandsons, Curtis Hedrick, Tarkio, Craig Hedrick, Higginsville, Missouri, Morris Ray, Fairfax, and Roger Ray, Olathe, Kansas; four great-grandsons, Tanton, Tristan, Mitchel and Tyler Ray; one great-granddaughter, Chancelee Hedrick; four stepgrandchildren, Richard, William and Robert Sons, and Kristina Upshaw; twelve stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 30, 2005, at the Fairfax United Methodist Church in Fairfax, for W. Doyle Southard, Fairfax. The services were conducted by Rev. Rob Francis and interment was made at Center Grove Cemetery, Westboro, Missouri, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Doyle was the second son born to Floyd M. and Lolus (Russell) Southard in Tarkio, Missouri, on January 30, 1929. Doyle passed away at Community Hospital in Fairfax on Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 27 days.
Doyle attended eight years at the Happy Hill Rural Elementary School near Tarkio, before moving to the Milton community south of Fairfax, where he attended Fairfax High School, graduating in 1947. Doyle married Esther Rolofson on July 4, 1948. In March of 1950 they moved to a farm north of Tarkio, where they farmed until he retired in 1999, and moved back to the Fairfax community. Doyle was an active member of the United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men's group in Fairfax. Doyle enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, gardening and helping wherever needed. His greatgrandchildren especially loved being with their Gramps or PaPa Doyle.
Doyle was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Janet Sue; son, Phil; and granddaughter, Lauren Southard.
Doyle is survived by his wife, Esther, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Gerald Hess, Cameron, Missouri; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Suzanne Southard, Fairfax; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Bill Shaffer, Downingtown, Pennsylvania; brother and sister-in-law, Galen and Lucille Southard, Tarkio; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Esther Lorayne Rolofson was born March 31, 1930, on a farm near Lincoln, Nebraska, to Samuel Paul and Mae Louise (Slafter) Rolofson. She lived in Nebraska until 1940 when the family moved to Northwest Missouri. She attended all four years high school in Westboro, Missouri, graduating in 1947.
She married Winfred Doyle Southard, Fairfax, Missouri, on July 4, 1948, in Tarkio, Missouri. To this union were born Janet Sue (on January 29, 1949, but passed on January 31,1949), Barbara Lorayne, Roger Doyle, Phillip Allen, and Martha Jane. They started farming in the Tarkio area in 1950 until Doyle's retirement in January 1999. They moved to Fairfax in 1997.
While her children were growing up, Esther served as a Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and Junior MYF director. She was very active in many committees in the Westboro and Tarkio Methodist churches. At the time of her death she was an active member of the Fairfax United Methodist Church. She was active for many years in the Morning Sun Extension Club, receiving the Homemaker of the Year award in the 1980's. Esther also was a cook at the Tarkio Schools for 24 years, retiring in 1992.
During her years on the farm, Esther raised a large garden and loved to grow flowers. Esther was well known for her knitting and crocheting projects, many that were used as raffle prizes for local organizations. She was also known to have a camera handy at all times and loved to share the pictures.
Esther passed away December 29, 2015, at the age of 85.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Gracie, Dorothy, Mildred and Lucille; two infant brothers plus Gayle and Warren (Pete); husband, Doyle; daughter, Janet Sue; son, Phillip; son-in-law, Bill Shaffer; granddaughter, Lauren Southard; and great-grandson, Damion Smith.
She is survived by Barbara (Gerald) Hess, Osborn, Missouri; Roger (Suzanne) Southard, Fairfax; and Martha Shaffer, Fairfax; eight grandchildren, nine greatgrandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held January 4, 2016, at the United Methodist Church in Fairfax. Interment was at Center Grove Cemetery near Westboro. Memorials may be directed to the Fairfax United Methodist Church.

Elsie "Sally" Strough, age 82, Kanas City, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. A memorial service was held on Monday, August 5, at Mt. Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home.
Sally was born January 24,1920, in Atchison County, MO. She was a graduate of Irish Grove High School. She was retired from Park Hill School. Sally was the daughter of Thomas and Basha Fries.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father and two sisters. Survivors include her husband, Dale Strough, of 54 years; and two sisters, Lois Coats, Edwardsville, Kansas, and Edith Hamilton, Tarkio, Missouri. Burial was at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Kansas City.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, September 27, 2004, at the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port, Missouri, for Evan Leonard Sutter of Rock Port. Pastor Rick Danforth officiated. Interment was made in Hunter Cemetery in Rock Port under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapel of Rock Port.
Evan Leonard Sutter, age 92, passed away on Thursday-September 23,2004, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port. He was born July 28, 1912, in Rock Port to Rose Agnus (Fischer) and William F. Sutter. He attended Rock Port High School in Rock Port, graduating in 1932.
Evan farmed and operated a dairy farm with his father and brother, Otto. On November 14, 1935, Evan was united in marriage to Matie Viola Gebhards.
In 1945, Evan began farming on his own. He farmed and lived in the Rock Port area his entire life, until 1980, when he retired and moved into Rock Port. During retirement, he enjoyed mowing his yard, feeding the squirrels and going out to eat. Evan especially enjoyed going to his family's athletic events and rarely missed a football game. Evan was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port.
Survivors include Evan's wife of 68 years, Matie, Rock Port; two sons, Ronnie Sutter and daughter-in-law, Phyllis, Rock Port, and Herbert Darrell Sutter and daughter-in-law, Anita, Fairfax, Missouri; six grandchildren, Jerry Sutter, Debbie True, Kevin Sutter, Dayne Sutter, Jennifer LaHue and Tim Sutter; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Marie Sutter, Frieda Derrossett and Betty Jayne Gebhards, all of Rock Port.
Besides his parents, Evan was preceded in death by two brothers, Otto and William Sutter. Memorials may be directed to the Nutrition Center in Rock Port.

Florence Amanda (Gerloff) Swackhamer passed away at her home on Sunday, January 18, 2004, after a brief illness. She was born in Pettis County on September 16, 1914, the daughter of Otto and Rose (Loeb) Gerloff. She grew up on a farm and graduated from the public schools at Hughesville, Missouri. She graduated from the Missouri University School of Nursing in 1936 .
Florence married Orin Cletus Swackhamer on February 14,1937. They lived in Bethany, Missouri, for seven years, where she worked as a nurse. They started a family and moved to a farm east of Fairfax. After raising six children, she resumed her nursing career at the Fairfax Community Hospital until she retired.
She is survived by five daughters, Patty Rochelle Swackhamer, Ash Grove, Missouri, Penny Deanna Updegraff, San Diego, California, Phyllis Madeleine Swackhamer, Paonia, Colorado, Terry Lynn Hoehn, Knoxville, Illinois, and Jeanette Sue Swackhamer, Springfield; son, Orin Cletus Swackhamer, Jr., Centerville, Iowa; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Otto A. Gerloff, San Angelo, Texas.

Thompson, Beira Dragoo Morgan -
Beira Dragoo-Morgan Thompson 89, passed away Feb. 4 [1988] at the Bethesda Care Center, Tarkio, following a brief illness. She was born March 20, 1898 in Phelps City, the daughter of Leniel L. and Martha (Sperry) Dragoo.
She received her early education in the Tarkio Elementary School and graduated from Tarkio High School in 1917. She taught in a country school near Westboro after her graduation and also worked as a substitute mail carrier for her father in the Tarkio communitv.
In 1920 she was united in marriage to William O. Morgan in Tarkio. For several years she owned and operated the Linwood Hotel and also did catering.
In 1945 she moved to California in the Glendale and La Cresenta area where she met and married James Jeffery Thompson in 1948. After her marriage she worked in a bakery. Mr. Thompson passed away in 1953. During the early 1960's, she retired and made her home in Glendale. Beira was very talented in music and also had enjoyed playing the violin and viola with two orchestra groups in California. In August of 1987 she returned to Tarkio to live with her daughter, Joan.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Tarkio and the Wesleyan Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Fairfax, Missouri Chapter No. 373 Order of the Eastern Star and had held numerous offices. She was a member of the
Young-At-Heart Club and the Wednesday Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Kemerling, Tarkio; a son, Charles W. Morgan, Aransas Pass, Tex.; two grandchildren, Ken C. Kemerling and Kay Koenig, both of Tarkio; and two great-grandchildren, Christopher
Michael and Erin Lea Koenig.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands; one daughter, Martha Jane Morgan, and one brother, Dale O. Dragoo.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 9,2005, at 10:30 a.m., at the Church of the Nazarene in Craig, Missouri, for Mavis June Thomson, of Craig, Missouri. The services were conducted by Rev. Bob Self and burial was at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig, Missouri. Funeral services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax, Missouri.
Mavis June Showalter was born September 20, 1917, on a farm northeast of Craig, Missouri, to David Martin Showalter and Ruth E. Griffin Showalter.
Mavis spent her entire life in the Craig area and attended Brush College through the eighth grade. She walked three miles to Craig High School and graduated in 1935. She spent one quarter term at Northwest State Teachers' College in Maryville, and worked a short time for Dr. White in Craig before marrying James Edward (Jimmie) Thomson at her parents' home on February 21, 1940.
On February 13, 1942, their first son, James David, was born. The family made their home in Craig and welcomed their second son, Michael Dean, on April 8, 1946.
In addition to being a homemaker, Mavis was a Tupperware and Avon distributor. Following the death of her husband, Jimmie, she wrote the Craig news column for the Mound City News Independent.
Mavis was always kind and selfless in her love for God and others. Her passion for the Lord and others served as an example to many in the community and especially at the Craig Church of the Nazarene where she was a lifelong member.
Those who shared a meal in Mavis' home were always treated to a feast. She displayed her love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in many ways, including attendance at activities ranging from musical events to sports' games and matches.
Survivors include sons, Jim and wife, Karen, Thomson of Omaha, NE, and Mike and wife, Nancy, Thomson of Maryville, MO. She is also survived by her grandchildren and their families: Mike and Nancy's children, Amy and Jonathan Mitchell, and Tracy and Kendell Hale, both of Kansas City, and Jim's children, Kim and Jeff Perkins of Omaha, NE, Greg and Michelle Thomson of Walnut Grove, MO, and David Kurtis and Tracy Thomson of Ellis, KS; and their mother, Leota Thomson. Other survivors include one brother, Duane and wife, JoAnn,Showalter of Craig; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The unconditional love she continually exhibited will be a most treasured memory for family and friends. Memorials may be directed to the Church of the Nazarene, Craig, Missouri.

Thornton, Robert Dewey -
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2005, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, located on the corner of Sixth and Vine Streets in Tarkio, Missouri, for Robert Dewey Thornton.
Robert Dewey Thornton was born on March 13,1930, at home in Atchison County, Missouri. He grew up and worked in Atchison County until joining the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force, he married Mary F. McVey and they had three children together.
Upon being discharged from the Air Force, Robert returned to Atchison County and worked as a farm laborer, until he began a career in truck driving. In the late 1960's he moved to Camdenton, Missouri. While living in Camdenton he dedicated himself to Jehovah and helped found the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness. Working under the direction of qualified Hall Elders, he helped the small group of that congregation grow, and spread the good news of Jehovah in a wide area.
He returned to Atchison County in the late 1970's. In 1996 he married Vanace East, and remained in the Atchison area, Both Robert and Vanace attended the Tarkio Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Thornton, Nora Patton; stepfather, Roy Patton; two brothers, Jim and Archie; one sister, Dorothy; and a daughter. He is survived by his wife, Vanace of the home; son, Randell Thornton, Fairfax; daughter, Sarah Schnakenburg, La Monte, Missouri; four sisters, Jean Erdman, Divide, Colorado, Sharon Patton, Tarkio, Missouri, Donna DeWees, Rock Port, Missouri, and Carrie Grebe, Versailles, Missouri; three grandchildren, Tyler of La Monte, Mark Stewart and Melissa Cogdill, both of Fairfax; and a great-granddaughter, Mercy Cogdill, Fairfax. He was also blessed with an extended family of many nieces and nephews and stepgrand-children.

Townsend, Harry Warren -
Harry Warren Townsend 67, passed away Feb. 6 [1988] at the University of Missouri Health and Science Hospital. He was born July 19, 1920 at Fairfax, the son of Ezra B. and Nora Mae Million Townsend.
He received his education in the Fairfax schools.
Mr. Townsend and Dorothy Brown were married July 14,1946 in Rock Port. They moved to Columbia in October of 1980 from Davenport, la., where he worked as a real estate agent. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourds Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus in Columbia, and Moose Lodge #776 at Moberly. He was a volunteer worker for the Veterans Administration and the Red Cross.
Survivors are his wife, Dorothy, of the home; one son, Donald L. Garrett, Eidon, Mo.; one grandson, Michael; two brothers: Dwight Townsend, San Diego, Cal., and Cecil Townsend, Kansas City; two sisters: Mrs. Maud Lutz, Nebraska City, Neb., and Ora Mae Wilson, Yuma, Ariz., and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Services were held Feb. 10 at Our Lady of Lourds Catholic Church,
conducted by Father Thomas Kraus O.S.B. and Father Columban Steffes O.S.B. Interment was at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Edwin Louis "Ted" Tyson was born to Edwin and Lettie Walkup Tyson on January 18, 1918, in rural Atchison County, Missouri. He graduated from Daleview High School and Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville, Missouri. After teaching a few years, Ted was inducted into the Army and served in the Pacific area during World War II.
After completing his Army term, Ted graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, with a Master's Degree in Library Science. He accepted a position as librarian of San Jose City College, he retired from there in 1972, and moved to his home in Nevada City, California, where he died at age 92.
Ted is survived by a sister, Marcia Tyson Symanski, Maryville; nephew, Turner W. Tyson, II, Jefferson City, Missouri; niece, Barbara Tyson Finn, Pensacola, Florida; and numerous great-nephews and nieces. A nephew, Edwin Chaves Tyson is deceased. Carol Dollie (Poe) Underwood, age 82, passed away Sunday, November 7, 2004, at her home in Rock Port. She was born on May 10, 1922, in Fairfax, Missouri, the daughter of Dollie Mae (Flanagan) and Benjamin F. Poe. She attended Irish Grove School and graduated in 1940.
On March 29,1941, Carol was united in marriage to Victor Plumb. They had one daughter, Virginia (Ginny), and made their home west of Fairfax. Victor was killed in World War II.
On August 25, 1946, Carol was united in marriage to Everette Underwood and they made their home in Rock Port. They had two girls, Connie and Dannye. Everette passed away in 1998.
Carol was employed by the Rock Port Market, where she was just honored this past December for over 50 years of dedicated service. Since 1981, she had also cleaned the USDA offices.
She enjoyed gardening, quilting and was a caregiver to many of her family and close friends. The most important thing in life to her was being surrounded by "family", which extended way beyond immediate. She loved to have the house full for holidays, family reunions, quilting get-togethers and apple butter making.
Carol was a member of the Baptist Church in Rock Port, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Irish Grove Alumni. Besides her parents and husbands, Victor and Everette, Carol was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include: three daughters, Ginny Vernon and her husband, Jack, Fairfax, Connie Eymann and her husband, Arthur,
Macon, Missouri, and Dannye Bradfield and her husband, Richard, Fairfax; four grandchildren, Neil Million and close friend, Donna, Nancy Hummel and her husband, Jeff, Carrie Bergfield and her husband, Matt, and Cory Eymann and his wife, Angie; five step-grandchildren, Jennifer Schoonover and her husband, Scott, John Vernon and his wife, Angie, Joanna Crane, Carrie Bradfield and Melinda Drewes; six greatgrandchildren, Ashley Million, Michael Hummel, Bryant Hummel, Caleb Bergfield, Isaac Bergfield, and Tanner Eymann; numerous special nieces and nephews; and a host of special friends. Memorials may be directed to the Baptist Church, Greenhill Cemetery, or Nutrition Site, all in Rock Port.

Van Leuven, Robert Ray - Robert Ray Van Leuven, the son of Donald Robert and Gussie Lee (Horton) Van Leuven, was born September 21, 1926 in Tarkio, Missouri. He attended country school east of Tarkio and graduated from Tarkio High School in 1944.
Bob entered the United States Navy on August 22, 1944 and served his country during World War II. On January 28, 1945, Bob married Donna Hunter and they became the parents of Pam and Cindy. They were later divorced. Upon receiving his honorable discharge on April 17, 1946, Bob returned to Fairfax, Missouri and farmed with his father-in-law, J.E. Hunter.
On June 11, 1959, Bob was united in marriage Lavern Valasek and became the parents of Valerie, Bob and Randolph. They lived in Omaha, Nebraska where Bob was employed as a truck driver hauling livestock and later worked for Cargill hauling agricultural products. He retired in 1993 after 35 years receiving the “One Million Accident Free Miles Award”. In Omaha Bob was a member of the American Legion. Lavern preceded him in death in 1991.
On April 22, 1999, Bob married Betty McIntosh in Maryville, Missouri. They made their home in Tarkio until the present time. Bob loved agriculture and was proud of his family’s Century Farm where he raised cattle and sheep until 2006. Bob passed away Friday, April 23, 2010 at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care at the age of 83 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lavern; brother, Dale Van Leuven; granddaughter, Lisa K. Simmons and niece, Stacy Van Leuven. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean, of their home in Tarkio; children, Pam Rightsell and husband, Mac, Tarkio, Cindy Wykes and husband, Steve, Dunkirk, Ohio, Valerie Rauso and husband, Lou, Omaha, Nebraska, Bob Van Leuven and wife, Donna, Mesa, Arizona and Randolph Van Leuven, also of Tarkio; stepchildren, Sharley Ann Squier and husband, Fred, Kalvin McIntosh and wife, Stephanie, Paul McIntosh and wife, Shannon, Kelly McIntosh and wife, Cindy, Sid McIntosh and wife, Ashley; eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, eleven step grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Lois Van Leuven, one niece, one nephew and numerous cousins.

Vaught, Lois Wake - Lois Vaught, 89, of Milliken, Colorado, died February 15, 2010, at her home in Milliken. She was born August 20, 1920, in Fairfax, Missouri to Emery E. Wake and Edith A. Parr. Lois graduated from Fairfax High School in 1937. Lois married Cecil "Les" Vaught in September 1953 in
Fairfax. Lois was employed by Pearce Produce and Hatchery in Fairfax, Roosevelt High School and Milliken Middle School where she retired as secretary to the principal. She was active and volunteered her services at the Johnstown Senior Center. She also delivered Meals on Wheels. Lois was an active member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Windsor, Colorado. She loved her church and her family. Lois was an avid reader and enjoyed weekly Bible study and spending time with her neighbors at Dove Retirement Community where she lived until the time of her death.
Lois is survived by her sons James Stevenson of Evans, Colorado, and John (Debbie) Stevenson of Lubbock, Texas; daughters Benita (Louis) Snow of Billings, Montana, and Darlene (Kurt) Nelson of Milliken; brother E. W. (Patty) Wake of Cheyenne, Wyoming; 6 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Vaught, in 2003, and her oldest brother, Dale Wake.

Wells, John Edward -
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 13, 2002, at the Fairfax Presbyterian Church, Fairfax, Missouri, for John Edward Wells, Fairfax. Reverend Chet Mason officiated. Interment was made in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax. A flag presentation under the auspices of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199, Tarkio, Missouri, was made. Services were under the direction of Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio.
John Edward Wells, the son of Dow and Irene (Walker) Wells, was born September 29, 1918, in Osborne, Kansas. John attended school in Kansas, then farmed and worked in a C.C.C. camp.
On November 9, 1942, John entered the United
States Army and served his country overseas in the Germany, Africa, and Asia campaigns. He was wounded in Cologne, Germany, and also in the Battle of the Bulge, receiving two Purple Hearts. John received his honorable discharge on November 8, 1945, and soon after moved to Tarkio and worked for Merle McCoy as a carpenter.
On October 13,1956, John was united in marriage to Doris (Walker) McClain in Mound City, Missouri. They lived and farmed in the Fairfax area. John retired from farming in 1981, and continued to live, in Fairfax until the present time. He passed away December 11, 2002, at the Northview Manor care facility in Tarkio at the age of 84 years.
John was a member of the Fairfax Presbyterian Church, the Allen-Schiffern
American Legion Post #199 of Tarkio, Fairfax Lodge #483 A F. & A.M., and Moila Shrine Temple, St. Joseph, Missouri.
Survivors include John's wife, Doris, of the home in Fairfax; one daughter, Karen Combs and son-in-law, J.C., Wichita, Kansas; two grandsons, Cory M. Combs and wife, Kayo Miki, San Francisco, California, and Matthew M. Combs, Nashville, Tennessee; and one niece, Connie Starns, Athens, Georgia.
Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his grandson, J. Christopher Combs; three brothers, Lynath, Oscar and David Wells; and two sisters, Edith Lanning and Edna Montgomery. Memorials may be directed to the Fairfax Presbyterian Church or Community Hospital, both in Fairfax.

Wennihan, Ruth Angela Davenport -
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of God in Craig, Missouri, for Ruth Angela Wennihan, Fairfax. Rev. Randy Brooks officiated. Interment was made at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Ruth Angela Wennihan, age 87, passed away on Friday, October 22, 2004. She was born October 2, 1917, north of Tarkio, Missouri, the seventh child of Fred and May (Humes) Davenport. She attended school in Fairfax, Missouri. On April 27, 1936, she was married to John Ray Wennihan in Troy, Kansas, by Judge J.B. Bell. Their married life began on farms east of Tarkio, then west of Skidmore, Missouri. In 1953, they moved to a farm in the Milton community near Fairfax where she resided until her death.
Ruth's joys in life were gardening and serving the Lord and her family. She was a member of the Church of God, Craig, Missouri. In her lifetime she taught Sunday school and was an active member of the WCG. She was also a member of the Milton Community Club.
Survivors include four sons, Donald Ray Wennihan and wife, Bridget, Craig, Gary Dean Wennihan and wife, Betty, Fairfax, Frederick Allen Wennihan and wife, Janet, Tarkio, and Gregory Dwayne Wennihan and wife, Janet, Fairfax; two daughters, Shirley Ann Heits and husband, Richard, Fairfax, and Marcia Lynn Umbarger and husband, Steven, Rock Port, Missouri; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces; and one brother, Owen Davenport and wife, Nina, Tarkio.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Ray Wennihan; seven brothers and sisters; daughter-in-law, Beverly Wennihan; and grandson, Timothy Ryan Wennihan. Memorials may be directed to the Church of God, Craig.

Williams, Evan L. -
Evan L. Williams, Sr. of Greenville, South Carolina, and former resident of Fairfax, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2004. Mr. Williams was 92 years old and was recovering from surgery at the time of his death.
Mr. Williams was born in Corning, Missouri, the first child of the late Claude and Elsie Williams. In 1935 he married Margaret Kemerling who remained the love of his life for almost 70 years. In 1936 he became a Mason. He served his country in World War II as a photographer in the Navy from 1943 to 1945. He was the successful owner of Williams School of Pictures in Charleston, West Virginia, for most of his career. He and Margaret also owned a children's clothing store located in Charleston. During his retirement he enjoyed traveling, playing golf, boating, fishing and gardening at their home in Florida. His friends and family will best remember Mr. Williams for his kindness, out going personality and jokes.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, now residing in Pennsylvania; his daughter, Gay Stroupe of Pennsylvania; and his son, Evan Williams, Jr., of Greenville, South Carolina. His five grandchildren also survive him: Alex Stroupe of Florida, Candace Grippando of Florida, Lisa Cosentino of Pennsylvania, Tracy Evans of Indiana, and Lori Bagwell of Georgia. Also surviving him are six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Charlene Burke of Fairfax, and many other relatives and dear friends. Mr. Williams will be laid to rest at English Grove Cemetery in Fairfax.
