Chrystal Barnes, 86, formerly of Elmo, Mo., died Monday, Dec. 12, 1994, at the Community Hospital, Fairfax, Mo. Funeral services will be Friday,Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Elmo, with burial at the High Prairie Cemetery near Elmo.
Visitation will be Thursday from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Barr-Merrick Funeral Chapel, Burlington Junction, Mo. The family has suggested memorials for the United Methodist Church.
She was born Nov. 22, 1909, in Page County, Iowa, to Aca and Blance Gates Akin.       
She married Olin Barnes Feb, 12, 1929, at Clarinda and they shared 56 years of marriage. They moved to Atchison County at that time and purchased a farm in 1945 where they lived until 1976 when they retired and moved to Elmo. She lived in Elmo until 1987 when she went to the care center at Rock Port to make her home.
She graduated from the Elmo High School. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Elmo, and of the United Methodist Women, the Atchison County Extension Council and a member of the North Starlett Extension Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Olin, in 1985 and a grandson, Curtis Barnes.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth Barnes, Westboro, Mo.; a daughter, Bonnie Sharp, Tacoma, Wa.; two brothers, Lowell Akin, Graham, Mo., and Lisle Akin, Clearmont, Mo; three sisters, Marjorie Kelley, Clarinda; RuthWhigham, Ames; and Anna Belle Neff, Everton, Mo.; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Armilda Helen Bywater, age 92, passed away Monday, December 11,1995, at Community Hospital in Fairfax, Missouri. She was born September 12, 1903, in Tarkio to Annie Laurie (McCumber) and Presley W. O'Bannan. All her life was lived in the Tarkio community. She attended Homer Country School and the Tarkio public schools.
Armilda was united in marriage to James Benjamin Bywater at the O'Bannan home in Tarkio on June 20,1920. They continued to reside in Tarkio where they reared their 11 children. Mr. Bywater passed away in 1987.
Armilda was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother whose family was the focal point of her life. Traveling and visiting with her many friends were special highlights in her life. Other interests she enjoyed were sewing, canning and taking care of her garden and flowers.
Armilda loved her church and was a faithful member and servant of the Assembly of God Church in Tarkio. She also enjoyed her memberships in the Garden Club, the Thursday Club, the Widow's Club and Young at Heart Club, all of Tarkio.
Survivors include: four sons, Eddie Ray Bywater and Presley Clark Bywater, both of Tarkio, Lester Beryl Bywater, Avoca, Iowa, and James Ralph Bywater of Garden Grove, California;
three daughters, Mrs. Dale (Virginia) Jones of Tarkio, Mrs. Eugene (Mildred) Smith. Fairfax, and Mrs. Tom (Annie) Bowers of Ames, Iowa; 35 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy McDaniel of Norwalk, California; and one niece, Pauline Sons of Kansas City, Missouri, who was reared as a sister in the home.
Besides her parents and husband, Armilda was preceded in death by three sons, Eugene Oswald Bywater, Charles Laverne Bywater and James Benjamin Bywater; one daughter, Lois Farwell; seven sisters, Ida Morley, Zoa Marks, Mabel Graham, Alta Burk, Alma Lane and two infants; one infant brother; and one half brother, Bill O'Bannan. Marion L. Carter, age 81, passed away Sunday, February 4, 1996, at his home in Fairfax. He was born on a farm east of Fairfax on January 1, 1915, to Vera Edith (Breckenridge) and Galen Ray Carter. He was raised in Atchison County. He graduated from Daleview High School near Fairfax.
On March 11, 1962, Marion married Beulah Steele. Marion was a farmer until retiring in 1989, and a truck driver until retiring in 1995. He resided most of his life in Fairfax with the exception of traveling to south Texas during some winters.
Marion was a member of the Walkup's Grove Baptist Church near Fairfax. Memorials maybe directed to the 40 & 8 Nurses' Training Fund or the American Cancer Society.

Case, Iva Irene Ellison - Iva Irene Case, age 83 of Hamburg passed away on Monday; Feb. 10 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lincoln, Neb.
She was born on June 2, 1930 at Watson, Mo.; the daughter of George Daniel and Elsie (Turner) Ellison. She attended school and graduated from the Watson High School. She then attended Peru State College, Peru, Neb. where she obtained her teaching certificate. Iva taught school at Cox Chapel Country School, where she met Robert L. Case Jr. They were united in marriage on July 7, 1949 at the Methodist parsonage in Sidney.
Bob and Iva farmed near Braddyville and owned and operated the Braddyville Market for 19 years where they enjoyed serving their customers and making sure that the kids went home with a sweet treat. They later moved to Hamburg where they owned and operated the Hamburg Motel for 18 years. After retirement, to keep busy, Iva provided home health care services for others and worked in the dietary department at the Grape Community Hospital.
One of Iva’s greatest pleasures was preparing generous and delicious meals for her family and friends. Not a holiday went by that Iva didn’t whip up a plentiful smorgasbord of tasty goodies to everyone’s delight.
She is survived by her husband Robert L. Case of Hamburg; a daughter Sue Witthoft and husband Richard of Clarinda; two granddaughters: Kate Jorgensen , husband Tyler, and their daughter Abigail of Gurnee, Ill.; and Emily Witthoft and fiancé David Furst and their son Easton of Clarinda; sisters-in-law: Shirley Ellison of Rock Port, Mo., Lois Jean Ellison of Braddyville, and Arliss Kohout of Clarinda, many nieces and nephews, and a host of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by siblings: Laura Harmon and her husband Bill, Bill Ellison, Ernie Ellison, and Beverly Robinson.
Services were held Thursday, Feb. 13 afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Watson Methodist Church, Watson, Mo. with Pastor Bruce Jeffries officiating.
Memorials may be given to the Watson Methodist Church or the Hamburg Rescue.

Blaine Irvin Cook, age 45, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 1996, at Community Hospital in Fairfax, Missouri. He was born June 28,1950, in Fairfax to Ann Z. (Smith) and James I. Cook. Living in the Tarkio area, Blaine attended the Tarkio schools. His freshman year of high school, he attended St. John's Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, and then graduated from Tarkio High School in 1968.
Blaine entered the United States Air Force in July of 1968 and served his country overseas
during the Vietnam War, being stationed in Guam. Attaining the rank of Sergeant, he received his honorable discharge in 1972. For one year, he attended Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville.
On June 22,1973, Blaine was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Wright at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Craig. They became the parents of two sons, Ryan Blaine and Troy Michael. They lived in St. Joseph, Missouri, where Blaine worked with National Life Insurance Company before moving back to Tarkio in 1974 to work with Central States of Omaha, Nebraska. In 1975, Blaine became associated with Missouri Farm Bureau Insurance Company. In the fall of 1978, the family moved to Rock Port where Blaine was eventually promoted to District Manager. Since that time, he had received three professional designations: the Life Underwriting Training Council Fellow, the Chartered Life Underwriter, and the Chartered Financial Consultant. He was serving as District Manager of nine counties, Atchison, Andrew, Buchanan, Clinton, DeKalb, Gentry, Holt, Nodaway and Worth, at the time of his death.
Blaine was a wonderful husband and father, who always kept his family the focal point of his life. Besides his family, youth played an important role in his life as he donated much time to organizing and helping with all youth sports and activities in the area. As a lover of sports, he enjoyed running and had organized a run-a-thon for the Rock Port Track program and participated by running 25 miles. He was a football official for the MSHSAA, a C.A.B.A. head coach, and had attained the Black Belt Degree in Tae Kwon Do. Well known and respected by all, Blaine touched the lives of many with his motivational speaking. He encouraged everyone with his hard work and caring ways, and truly reflected his own words, "When you help someone, everyone wins".
Blaine was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and a former Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the National Association of Life Underwriters; a member and past president of the Rock Port Optimist Club; had served on the Atchison County DA.R.E. Committee; and was a member and past commander of the Allen Schiffern American Legion Post #199 of Tarkio.

Corken, William H. - William H. Corken, the son of Hubert Stanley and Orpha Joyce (Farris) Corken was born September 10, 1931, in Maryville, Missouri. Bill graduated from Burlington Junction High School in 1949. Bill then attended Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, graduating in 1953. He then attended the University of Colorado, Boulder and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, graduating from the School of Banking.

On June 5, 1954, Bill was united in marriage to Jean Long at the Maryville United Methodist Church. They became the parents of two children, Craig and Laura and made their home in Rock Port, Missouri, from 1954 to 1998.

Bill taught school in Rock Port from 1954 to 1956, and in that year was employed by the Citizens Bank, Rock Port, where he worked for fourteen months. In May of 1957, Bill was employed by the Bank of Atchison County, also in Rock Port. During the 1970’s he was able to acquire an ownership interest in the bank, and served actively until his retirement in 1992. Bill passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Village House Hospice, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, at the age of 82.

Bill was a former member of the Rock Port United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir from 1954 to 1998. He was the former chairman of the Community Hospital Board, Fairfax, Missouri, during its expansion in 1981, a member of the Rock Port Rotary Club from 1956 to 1992. Bill was instrumental in the organization of Missouri Beef Packers, west of Rock Port, a project that funneled thousands of jobs and millions of dollars into the area. Bill was an avid golfer and supporter of the Rock Port Country Club and enjoyed singing in various Barber Shop Quartets and Choruses. Bill was a current member of Woods Chapel, United Methodist Church, Lee’s Summit.

Besides his parents Bill was preceded in death by grandson, Ben Bond; brothers and their wives, James (Gwen) Corken and Jack (Margaret) Corken; and sister-in-law, Eleanor Corken. Survivors include his wife, Jean, Lee’s Summit; son, Craig Corken and his wife, Lisa, Rock Port; daughter, Laura Bond, and her husband, Sonne, Olathe, Kansas; grandchildren, Trent Corken, and his wife, Beth, Lincoln, Nebraska, Erica Barnes and her husband, Dustin, Fairfax, Missouri, Kaitlea Corken and fiancé, Ross Hastert, Rock Port, Joe Stricklin, Kansas City, Missouri, Krista Seelbach, Henderson, Texas, Carrie Bond, Rapid City, South Dakota, Jack Bond and Shannon Bond, Olathe, Kansas; great-granddaughter, Stella Bond, Rapid City; brother, Jerry Corken, Fort Worth, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Driskell, Roy L. - Roy Lee Driskell, 59, Savannah, formerly of Tarkio, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, Missouri.

Roy Lee Driskell, the son of Willie Ace and Dorothy Emaline (Thompson) Driskell, was born October 21, 1954, in West Plains, Missouri. He attended Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri.

On July 1, 2000, Roy was united in marriage to Catherine (Peregrine) Harbison at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Tarkio. They made their home in Tarkio, Maryville and Savannah, Missouri, where Cathy currently lives.

Roy was employed by the City of Tarkio in maintenance for 27 years. He was a member of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199, Tarkio. Roy passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, Missouri, at the age of 59.

Besides his parents, Roy was preceded in death by brother, Bill Driskell and niece, Sonya Driskell. Eyman, Jackie D. - Jackie D. “Jack” Eyman, the son of Alfonso Jerome and Inez (Brought) Eyman was born December 19, 1934, in Rock Port, Missouri. He attended Red Star country school, north of Rock Port and Watson High School, Watson, Missouri.

On August 13, 1960, Jack was united in marriage to Norma Nadean Tunnell in Shenandoah, Iowa. They made their home in the Tarkio, Missouri area for a short time before moving to Kansas City, Missouri, where Jack was employed by an over the road trucking firm. Soon after, Jack purchased his own truck, contracting employment with numerous companies. Throughout the years, his operation required many moves. He especially enjoyed his wife, Norma, riding in the truck with him. In 1984, they returned to Tarkio. Norma passed away March 23, 1996. Following Norma’s death, Jack moved to West Plains, Missouri, where he lived to the present time. Jack passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Cox Medical Center South, Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 79.

Besides his parents and wife, Jack was preceded in death by two brothers. Norma Nadean Eyman, age 51, passed away Saturday, March 23, 1996, at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax, Missouri. She was born May 25, 1944, in Hamburg, Iowa, to Mildred Hazel (Snell) and Charles Hughes Tunnell. As a young girl, she lived with her family in several area communities including Shenandoah, Iowa, and Fairfax, Quitman and Tarkio, Missouri, where she attended the local schools.
On August 13, 1960, Norma was united in marriage to Jackie Dean Eyman in Shenandoah. They resided in Tarkio for a short time before moving to Kansas City, Missouri, where Jack's employment was with a trucking firm. Throughout the years, Jack's job required many moves, however the Eymans had resided in Tarkio for the last 12 years.
Norma was an excellent mom and cherished the time spent with her children and grandchildren. In later years, she especially enjoyed riding in the truck with her husband. Besides spending time with her family, she enjoyed cooking, shopping, and working in the yard planting flowers.

Fischer, John H. - John H. Fischer, 79, Gladstone, formerly of Rock Port, Missouri, passed away Friday, January 10, 2014, at his home in Gladstone.

John H. Fischer, the son of Charles Frederick Fischer and Lucy Ileene (Andermann) Fischer was born January 11, 1934, in Rock Port, Missouri. John graduated from Rock Port High School in 1952. On March 3, 1953, John entered the United States Army serving his country during the Korean War. He received his honorable discharge on March 2, 1955 and soon after attended Northwest Missouri State College, Maryville, Missouri and Tarkio College, Tarkio, Missouri, graduating in 1959.

On July 12, 1959, John was united in marriage to Betty Frances Smith at the First Baptist Church, Tarkio by Rev. Don Momburg and they became the parents of two children, Leona Kay and John Michael. John was employed by the Firestone Tire Company in Kansas and Missouri until retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Linden Baptist Church, Gladstone, where he served as a Deacon, and the Ralph Greer American Legion Port #49, Rock Port. John passed away Friday, January 10, 2014, at his home in Gladstone, Missouri at the age of 79.

Besides his parents; John was preceded in death by an infant son; two brothers and their wives, Charles and Carol Fischer and William and Shirley Fischer; uncle, Elmer Andermann; aunts, Minnie Baldwin and Mable Andermann. Gibbons, Henry D. - Henry Don Gibbons, the son of William Harvey and Bessie Mae (Butts) Gibbons, was born March 6, 1930 near Greenville, Missouri. He attended school in Greenville. His family moved frequently in the rural areas of the Missouri boot heel picking cotton yearly. In 1941, the Wappapello Dam was built nearby, causing the water to overtake Greenville and their homestead. They soon after moved to Tarkio, Missouri where Henry helped build the 1st National Bank addition and worked for local farmers.

On July 29, 1949, Henry was united in marriage to Beverly Jackson in Glenwood, Iowa and they became the parents of two children, Terry and Corliss. Henry worked for the same farmer for sixteen years when in 1966 he had the opportunity to begin farming for himself, north of Tarkio. In 1969 he purchased his first 120 acre farm and soon after was able to purchase 3 more farms, raising and selling hogs in Atchison County. In 1973, Henry was chosen the “FHA Farmer of the Year” and in 1980 they were awarded the “Farm Community Betterment Family of the Year.” Henry retired in 1994 and moved to Warsaw, Missouri. Henry loved farming and enjoyed fishing and coon hunting as hobbies. In 2006, they returned to Tarkio, Missouri due to Henry’s declining health. He passed away Saturday, February 8, 2014, at his home in Tarkio, at the age of 83. Henry was a member of the First Baptist Church, Tarkio.

Besides his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his twin brother, Joe Gibbons; brothers, Charlie and Kenneth Gibbons, twin brothers, Jack Gibbons and Gene Gibbons; sister, Agnes Hale, twin sisters, Nora Hardwick and Flora Stane. Survivors include, his wife, Beverly, Tarkio; son, Terry Gibbons, and his wife, Twyilla, Westboro, Missouri; daughter, Corliss Gibbons, Tarkio; four grandchildren, Tyson, Tasha, Linda and Stacey; ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Arthur G. Harbison, age 74, passed away Sunday, March 10, 1996, at Community Care of America in Tarkio. He was born December 17, 1921, in the rural Skidmore, Missouri, area to Nellie (Olds) and Albert Harbison. He was raised in that area and attended school in Skidmore. He lived in the Skidmore and Maryville, Missouri, areas until 1951 when he moved to Fairfax.
During World War II, Arthur served in the U.S. Navy. On October 21, 1951, he married Mary Payton. The couple farmed in the Fairfax and Tarkio areas. Arthur was a retired farmer at the time of his death.
Arthur was a member of the Temple Baptist Church in Maryville. He was also a member of the American Legion in Tarkio. 
Survivors include: Arthur's wife, Mary, of the home in Fairfax; one son, Arthur L., Maryville; three daughters, Elaine Hayes, Wichita, Kansas, Sandra Enos, Maryville, and Sherrey Moses, Tarkio; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Wells, St. Joseph, Missouri, and Alene Carpenter, Gower, Missouri. Graveside memorial services and inurnment were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 1996, at Linden Cemetery in Rock Port, Missouri, for Marshall T. Harmon of Auburn, Kansas. Reverend Allan Bash officiated. Services were under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapel of Rock Port.
Marshall T. Harmon, age 77, passed away Wednesday, February 28, 1996, at the Veterans' Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. He was born October 17, 1918, in Fairfax, Missouri, to Emma Belle (Wall) and Phillip Harmon. In his early years he attended the South Center Country School south of Fairfax. Marshall entered the United States Army April 24, 1942, and served his country during World War II, receiving his honorable discharge on November 18, 1943.
Through the years, Marshall worked as a heavy equipment operator, precision machinist and mechanic. He worked with his brothers, Royal and Paul, building the Missouri River levee system and then worked near Topeka, Kansas, on the 1-70 Turnpike construction. From 1971 to 1975, Marshall operated
a Redi-Mix concrete plant in Hiawatha, Kansas, and then owned and operated his own tractor and trailer hauling pre­cast concrete.
Following his retirement in 1978, Marshall made his home in the Tarkio and Westboro, Missouri, area until moving to Rock Port in the late 1980s. On January 1, 1996, Marshall moved to Auburn to be near his family.
Marshall was a member of the Tarkio Northwest Lodge Number 358, A.F. & A.M. He enjoyed flying and flew as a private pilot for several years.
Survivors include: three sons, Roy Harmon, Carl E. Harmon of Merriam, Kansas, and Phillip E. Harmon, Auburn; two daughters, Mary Atlakson and Elizabeth Harmon, both of Hiawatha; one grandson, Ron Harmon, who made his home with Marshall; and numerous other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Herron, Phyllis L. Block - Phyllis L. Herron, the daughter of Emmett C. and Reka Marie (Fehrman) Block, was born November 20, 1932, in Langdon, Missouri. She attended New Excelsior country school in Langdon, graduating from Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri, in 1950.

On May 14, 1950, Phyllis was united in marriage to Harold Dean Herron, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Langdon, Missouri. They became the parents of four children, Cathy Louise, Ricky G., Kenneth Ray and Barbara Jean.

Phyllis was a devoted homemaker and farmer’s wife. They made their home north of Rock Port and in Watson, Missouri, before moving to Langdon in 1959, where they continued farming. In 1973, they moved to California where Phyllis managed an apartment complex. Dean passed away in 1978. In 1980, Phyllis returned to Rock Port, where she owned and operated the Elk Inn Motel and Café until retiring in 2004. Phyllis passed away Friday, January 3, 2014, at Community Hospital Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 81. Phyllis was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port.

Besides her parents and husband, Phyllis was preceded in death by sister, Eva Stepp. Survivors include four children, Cathy Louise Kimzey, Pittsburgh, California, Ricky G. Herron and wife, Cathy, Kenneth Ray Herron and wife, Paula, all of Rock Port, and Barbara Jean Hatcher, Brentwood, California; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one nephew, Larry Stepp and wife, Nannette, Smithville, Missouri; and devoted companion, Gerald Meyer, Rock Port.

Joesting, Verna Belle Gubser - Verna Belle Joesting, the daughter of Claude Henry and Bertha Belle (Moore) Gubser, was born January 12, 1916, in northern Atchison County, Missouri. She attended Sunny Slope country school, graduating from Hamburg High School in 1933. Verna attended Peru Teachers College, Peru, Nebraska, graduating in 1936, with a teacher’s certificate. Verna taught at Wade, High Bank and Sunny Slope country schools for five years.

On May 18, 1941, Verna was united in marriage to Herman Joesting at the St. John’s Lutheran Church parsonage by Pastor Nolte. They made their home and farmed south of Hamburg, Iowa. In 1946, they moved to their family farm northwest of Tarkio where they raised their children, Kenneth and Marjorie.

Verna was a true farmer’s wife. She was actively engaged in the daily farm chores in addition to caring for her children. She loved to garden, tend to her flowers, and do needlework. Verna was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church Women, the Altar Guild, and taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was also a member of the County Extension Club and served on the Polk Township Election Board. Herman passed away in 2004. Verna passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care, Tarkio, at the age of 98.

Besides her parents, Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Herman; grandson, David Joesting; and brothers, Robert and Leroy Gubser. Johnson, Wilma Mae Troupe - Wilma Mae (Troupe) Johnson, the daughter of Earl Eugene and Flora Marie (Gerdes) Troupe was born in Plattsmouth, Nebraska on November 26, 1931. She attended the Westboro, Missouri Schools in her youth, graduating from Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri in 1950. Wilma then attended Tarkio College for one year.

On August 18, 1951, Wilma was united in marriage to Raymond Johnson at the First Presbyterian Church, Tarkio, Missouri. They made their home on her family farm where she lived the remainder of her life. Wilma was a devoted farmer’s wife and helped her husband with all the demands of farming and raising all kinds of critters. Raymond passed away in 1987. Wilma passed away Friday, January 31, 2014, at King City Manor, King City, Missouri at the age of 82.

Wilma was the caretaker of Center Grove Cemetery for many years. She also worked as the secretary for the Tarkio United Methodist Church and later was employed in night receiving at Wal-Mart, Shenandoah, Iowa. Wilma was a member of the Center Grove Cemetery Board, The London Club, Atchison Holt Ambulance District Board, a local and district officer of the United Methodist Women, organizer for the annual Lord’s Acre Day of Westboro, member and officer of the Westboro American Legion Auxiliary, Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader, and a member of the Westboro Lion’s Club. Wilma held the honor of being one of the first EMTs in the Tarkio, Westboro area. She took great pride in contributing to her community and church through many activities for numerous years.

Besides her parents and husband, Wilma was preceded in death by son-in-law, Stephen Miller and half- brother, Alfred Troupe. Survivors include, daughter, Jane Miller, Northboro, Iowa; three grandchildren, Amy Muller, Emily Parker, Justin Riggins; six great-grandchildren, Andrea Muller, Brittany Parker, Chase Parker, Maximillan Parker, Theodore Parker, Hallie Riggins; brother, Harlen Troup, Harcourt, Iowa.

Lee, Elizabeth A. "Bettie" Eisen - Elizabeth A. “Bettie” Lee, the daughter of Adolph and Lettie (Wackenhut) Eisen, was born April 19, 1909, in Detroit, Michigan. She attended Detroit Schools, graduating in 1927. She then attended two years at Bonstelle School of Fine Arts in Detroit, graduating with an Associate’s degree, and one year at Wayne University studying business. After college, Bettie was employed as a buyer for Hudson Department Store in Detroit.

On November 9, 1933, Bettie was united in marriage to James Robert Lee at her parent’s home in Detroit. They made their home in Detroit and Long Island, New York. James and Bettie started many churches, church schools and later a home for seniors in the Cambridge and Cooperstown, New York, areas where Bettie served as co-administrator. At her home in Long Island, she introduced Kagawa, one of the greatest Christian Leaders in Japan, to area ministers, their wives and missionaries. James passed away November 14, 1985. Bettie retired in South Wardsboro, Vermont, in 1975, and in 1993, Bettie moved to Tarkio, Missouri, to live closer to her son, David. Bettie passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014, at her home in Tarkio, at the age of 104.

Bettie was a member of the Tarkio Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, Garden Club and Book Club. Bettie served as president of the Church Women United in Long Island and Cambridge, New York, and the Hill and Valley Unit in Vermont. She served on the merger committee of the United Presbyterian Women when the United Presbyterian Church merged with the Presbyterian Church.

Bettie was known as “Mrs. Kind and Loving,” and loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed playing bridge, sewing and cross-stitching crafts, quilting and growing African violets and roses in her garden. Bettie received an award from Early American Society for her quilting.

Besides her parents and husband, Bettie was preceded in death by son, Richard James Lee, January 3, 2014; brother, Robert Eisen; and sister, Marguerite Eisen. Survivors include son, David Robert Lee and wife, Linda, Tarkio; daughter-in-law, Joanna Lee, Salem, New York; five grandchildren, Peter Lee, Sharon Ernst, Michael Lee, Kim Coughlin and Darin Lee; nine great-grandchildren, Billy, Katie, Erin, P.J., Rylinn, Sawyer, Asher, Natalie and Patrick.

Heather Nichole Lewis was born on April 9, 1997 in St. Joseph, Missouri, the second of three children of Janet L. (Purtle) and James J. Lewis.

She attended school at Craig High School. Heather enjoyed arts, crafts and painting. She especially enjoyed the family dog, Dixie.

Heather passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 16.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, H. Andrew and Dorothy Lewis, and her maternal grandfather, Harold Purtle.

Survivors include her parents, Janet L. Lewis of Craig, Missouri, and James J. Lewis of Mound City, Missouri; sister, Rachel, and brother, Ryan, both of the home; maternal grandmother, Marilyn Ottman of Maryville, Missouri; aunts, uncles, cousins, and a community of friends.

Services were held on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 10:30 am at the Chamberlain Funeral Home in Mound City. Family visitation was held on Friday evening from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. William Edwin "Bill" Livengood was born on October 12, 1958 at Fairfax, Missouri. He was one of four children of William C. "Bill" and Dortheda M. (Smith) Livengood.

Bill graduated from Craig High School in 1976. He married Becky Nuzum on September 26, 1981 in White Cloud, Kansas, and they became parents of two sons.

The family lived in Texas for several years before moving back to Missouri in 1993. Bill owned and operated bulldozers and heavy equipment. Bill passed away on January 19, 2014 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his father, and his great aunt, Doris Smith. He is survived by his wife Becky, of their Mound City home; his mother, Dortheda, of Gladstone, Missouri; son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Joey Livengood, and granddaughter, Bailee Schueth, all of Mound City; son, Michael of Mound City; brother and sister-in-law, Phillip and Sharon Livengood, sister, Lea Ann Boyd and her fiance' Rick Corolla, and sister Sherri Livengood, all of Texas; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and interment were held on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014 at 10:00 am at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Craig. Family visitation was held on Tuesday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Chamberlain Funeral Home in Mound City. Memorials may be directed to the Craig I.O.O.F. Cemetery

Joyce Marie Lueck was born on June 2, 1945 in Fairfax, Missouri to Albert and Alice (Prater) Fries. She graduated from Mound City High School and then later became a nurse.

Joyce passed away on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014 at a Kansas City area hospital at the age of 68.

Preceding her in death were her parents, and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her son, Richard Lueck of Craig, Missouri; daughters, Michelle Lueck of Kansas City, Kansas, and Angela Conner of Independence, Missouri; grandchildren, Bryttni, Jacob, Jared, Hannah and Zachary; great grandchildren, Jaydin, Xaylin, Riylen, Lilliana, and Star; brother, Edwin Fries of Craig; and sisters, Beverly Gilland of Craig, Susie Nowling of Craig, and Judith Dunn of Maryville, Missouri.

Dorothy A. Lydy, age 64, passed away Wednesday, January 17,1996, at Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse. She was born August 14, 1931, in Martinsville, Missouri, to Verda (Allen) and Jesse Geyer. She completed 12 years of education.
Dorothy married Frank Sanford Boone on December 8, 1953, in Tarkio. Her second marriage was to Carl Lydy on May 1, 1982, in Bloomington, Indiana. Dorothy resided in Bloomington; Westboro, Missouri; Shenandoah, Iowa; and Unadilla. She had spent the past one and one-half years at the Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse.
Dorothy was a homemaker. She also was associated with the Methodist Church.
Survivors include: two sons, Vern Boone, Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Gary Boone and wife, Lori, Unadilla; two daughters, Linda Bauer, Billings, Montana, and Patsy Linthicum, Hickman, Nebraska; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Dale Geyer, Sacramento, California; and two sisters, Linda Steinke, Tennessee, and Ethel Morrison, Burlington Junction, Missouri. Funeral services were held Friday, December 29,1995, at 1 p.m. at Harkins Funeral Home in Delta, Pennsylvania, for Mary G. Malone of Delta. Burial was made in Slateville Cemetery.

Mary G. Malone, age 90, passed away Tuesday, December 26, 1995, at Manor Care-Kingston Court in York, Pennsylvania, where she had resided since July of 1994. She was born April 4,1905, in Tarkio to Mary Elizabeth (Middleton) and John A. Gerlash.

Mary received her bachelor's degree from Tarkio College in Tarkio in 1926 and went on to receive both her master's degree and her doctorate from the University of Michigan. She taught mathematics in both Missouri and South Dakota. Mary moved to Delta from Akron, Ohio, in 1939 and had been a longtime member of the Slateville Presbyterian Church where she served several terms as an elder.

Mary was the wife of J. Gilbert Malone. They observed their 64th wedding anniversary in August.

Survivors include: Mary's husband, J. Gilbert Malone, of Deta; two sons, Gilbert G. Malone of York, Pennsylvania, and Marvin J. Malone of Glen Burnie, Maryland; three grandchildren; and one sister, Laura Edith Koopman, Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. Mary was preceded in death in 1985 by her brother, John M. Gerlash of Tarkio.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 19,1996, at the United Methodist Church in Tarkio for Meryle R. McCoy of Tarkio. Reverend Rob Winger officiated. Interment was made in Tarkio Home Cemetery in Tarkio under the direction of Davis Funeral Home of Tarkio. Full military rites were under the auspices of the Allen Schiffern American Legion Post #199 of Tarkio.
Meryle Riley McCoy, age 81, passed away Friday, March 15, 1996, at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax, Missouri. He was born July 5, 1914, in Stockton. Missouri, to Mary Elizabeth (Mamie) (Neal) and Chessten Herman McCoy. He received his early education at the Hudson Country School in Cedar County. Missouri, and in Kansas City, Missouri, where his family lived for a short time. In 1924, they moved to Tarkio where Meryle attended Tarkio Elementary and Tarkio High School. As a young man, Meryle worked with his father in the carpentry shop and soon learned the trade.
On January 26, 1942, Meryle was united in marriage to Lucy Virginia Black in Tarkio by Reverend Burke. During 1942, he entered the United States Army. He and Virginia resided in Mississippi while he received his basic training. He was later based in Italy serving his country, overseas, during World War II. Following his discharge in 1945, they briefly lived in Indiana, where Meryle was employed with Manley Popcorn. They returned to Tarkio in 1947 and Meryle soon became the junior member of his father's business, McCoy and Son.
In the early 1950s, Meryle became the sole owner of and operated McCoy Cabinet Shop to the time of his death. For many years, he worked as a general contractor. He built many homes and buildings in the area and took a great interest in property development and improvement. In the 1960s, Meryle was joined by his good friend, Dean Curnutt, in several business enterprises.

Meryle truly enjoyed his work and remained active in the operation of his business. His family is proud of the fact that Meryle, the third of four generations of carpenters, was a builder whose trademark was quality workmanship. His legacy is the houses, churches, and buildings that dot Tarkio and its country­side.
Meryle was a member of the United Methodist Church in Tarkio; the Allen Schiffern American Legion Post #199 in Tarkio; and the Chamber of Commerce in Tarkio. Memorials may be directed to Community Hospital Association in Fairfax.

McMahon, Deloris Irene McCloud - Deloris Irene McMahon daughter of Orville and Edith (Bates) McCloud was born January 17, 1925 in Tabor, Iowa. She passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 at George C. Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa. She was 89 years, 3 months, and 10 days old.

Deloris spent her childhood in Conway, Iowa until she was united in marriage to Clayton W. McMahon on October 3, 1941 in Rock Port, Missouri. They then moved to Shenandoah were she worked at Henry Fields Nursery for 35 years. After retirement she spent her time going around to flea markets buying and selling items. She enjoyed going to garage sales.

Deloris was preceded in death by her husband Clayton W. McMahon in 1991, a granddaughter, parents Orville and Edith McCloud, two brothers Robert and Gilbert, sister Phyllis, seven nieces and nephews. McMahon, Ronald S. "Ronnie" - Ronald S. (Ronnie) McMahon, the son of Gerald Stephen and Lois Lorraine (Anderson) McMahon, was born January 14, 1955, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He attended Moreland and Otho, Iowa, schools. Ronnie moved to Rock Port, Missouri, when he was a sixth grader and graduated from Rock Port High School in 1973.

On April 2, 1977, Ronnie was united in marriage to Marilyn Perry at the Rock Port United Methodist Church. They became the parents of two children, Kari Beth and Lori. They made their home in Rock Port their entire married life.

Ronnie was employed by Atchison County Coop, Missouri Beef Packers and as a sports writer for Atchison County Mail. He was also employed by Atchison Holt Electric until his declining health forced his retirement.

Ronnie was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port. Ronnie passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2014, in Rock Port at the age of 59.

Ronnie was preceded in death by his grandparents and brother, Mike McMahon. Survivors include wife, Marilyn, Rock Port; daughters, Kari Beth Amthor, and husband, Wyatt, and Lori Sybert, and husband, Jade, all of Rock Port; three grandchildren, Carsyn Sybert and Westyn and Talyn Amthor; parents, Jerry and Lois McMahon, Rock Port; siblings, Cathy Roup, and husband, Jim, Rock Port, Danny McMahon, and wife, Barb, Webster City, Iowa, Elaine Lewis, Doug McMahon, Mark McMahon, and wife, Marcy, all of Rock Port; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Meier, Robert Allen - Robert Allen Meier, the son of Harry Henry and Lena Ellen (Nelson) Meier was born January 28, 1937 in Shenandoah, Iowa. He attended the Clover Hill Country School in rural Westboro, Missouri, until the ninth grade, and graduated from Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri in 1955. Bob then attended the University of Missouri, in Columbia, for two years where he was a member of the Army ROTC program.

On June 30, 1957, Bob was united in marriage to Orma Faye Noble at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Westboro. They had three children; Phil Allen, Janice Faye and Lorie Kaye. Bob farmed the family farm for a number of years while raising his family. For twelve years, he and Orma operated the Big T Motel in Tarkio. Bob then was employed by Eaton Corporation, Shenandoah, Iowa, and later by the City of Tarkio Street Department until he retired in 2010. In 2011, Bob and Orma moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, where they resided until the present time. Bob passed away Monday, February 3, 2014 at his home in St. Joseph at the age of 77 years.

Bob was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Westboro, and had been a Boy Scout leader. His hobbies were spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, camping and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Orma, St. Joseph; children, Phil Meier and wife, Janet, Maryville, Missouri, Janice Taylor and husband, Gary, Fairfax, Missouri, Lorie Hall and husband, Chris, Tarkio; fourteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and a very large and loving extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Clifford Meier.

Laurel Mulvania, brother of the late Mitchell Mulvania of Fairfax, died June 27, 1992 in the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port. He was buried in graveside services on June 30, in Green Hill Cemetery, Rock Port.
Laurel was born in Henderson, IA, on July 13, 1898. He was one of five children of Jessie L. and Eva Viola Stewart Mulvania. The family moved to Atchison County, MO., in 1903. Laurel attended Phelps City, Rock Port schools and one term at Peru State College. On April 23,1930 he married Estelle Andrews of Tarkio. They farmed and raised a family of two sons and two daughters. Laurel retired in 1978 but continued to garden and enjoyed sharing his produce with neighbors and friends. Laurel and Estelle celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in April 23, 1980. Their son Ralph died later that same year on Nov. 24. Estelle passed away, June 23, 1983. Laurel remained at home alone and entered the nursing home in Dec. 1990.
Survivors are: his daughters, Leola Jean Hush of Boise, ID.; Helen Milgrom, Oklahoma City, OK.; daughter-in-law Gertrude Mulvania, Rock Port, MO.; a son Laurence Mulvania of Rogers, AR.; 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; a brother Walter Mulvania, Rock Port; a sister-in-law Marguerite Mulvania, Fairfax; nieces and nephews.

Muntz, James Russell "J.R." - James Russell (J.R.) Muntz, the son of Richard Lee “Dick,” Sr. and Arline Madeline (Walters) Muntz, was born February 12, 1942, in Maryville, Missouri. He attended West Bend country school and Rock Port Schools, Rock Port, Missouri, graduating in 1960.

J.R. along with his brother, Richard, and Harold Beasing purchased a custom corn shelling business which they operated for several years. On February 18, 1979, J.R. was united in marriage to Betty Thomas, in Las Vegas, Nevada. They made their home in Rock Port until the present time.

J.R. had a passion for farming and working the dirt. Every year he looked forward to planting flowers and raising a large garden. He took great pride in planting straight rows, watching the crops grow, and sharing the fruit of his labor with friends and neighbors. J.R. was formerly employed by the Atchison County Soil Conservation Service in Rock Port as a field assistant. In the early 1990’s J.R. was employed as a truck driver for Wal-Mart and most recently as a meat manager for Wal-Mart in Shenandoah, Iowa, until his declining health forced his retirement. He also served as sexton for Hunter Cemetery of Rock Port. He enjoyed browsing flea markets and looking for antiques. J.R. passed away Friday, April 18, 2014, at his home in Rock Port at the age of 72.

Besides his parents, J.R. was preceded in death by brother, Richard Muntz, Jr. and an infant sister. Amy J. (Nocton) Roberson, age 100 years, of Parker, Arizona, passed away Wednesday, December 20,1995, in Norwalk, California. She was born November 11, 1895, in Westboro, Missouri.
Survivors include one daughter, Ormah Lea Lutes of Parker; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Roberson was a longtime reader and subscriber to the Tarkio Avalanche.

Smith, Opal Marie Bunn - Opal Marie Smith daughter of George Sante Fe and Clara Alice (Starnes) Bunn was born May 22, 1921 in Rock Port, Missouri. She passed away February 14, 2014 in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 92.

Opal's family moved often but she grew up in the Clarinda area. In 1938 her parents moved to Northboro while she stayed in Clarinda to care for a blind lady named Anna Blakeman.

Opal was united in marriage to Kenneth Eldon Smith on August 21, 1939 in Maryville, Missouri. Their married life took them first to Westboro, Missouri. They eventually moved south of Farragut, Iowa to raise a family.

Opal was a member of United Methodist Church of Farragut, United Methodist Church Women Society, Farragut Community Club, and Dancing Grannies. She also helped with Kids Club and oversaw the Anchor Apartments. She enjoyed flowers, making crafts, alter steward and performing hat shows.

Opal was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Smith, daughter Judy, parents George and Clara Bunn, brother Bud Bunn.

Smith, William Eugene "Bill" - William Eugene “Bill” Smith, the son of Leland Wilson and Donna Maurie (Jones) Smith, was born January 13, 1968, in Fairfax, Missouri. He graduated from Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri, in 1986.

In 1993, Bill was united in marriage to Michelle Laughlin. They became the parents of Greg, Tim and Nathan. They were later divorced. On May 17, 2005, Bill was united in marriage to Kimberly Gossett and lived in Tarkio to the present time.

Bill was employed by Eaton Corporation, Shenandoah, Iowa, for 13 years. He was a manager at Trails End for eight years. Bill was currently employed as a forklift operator by Cargill in Nebraska City, Nebraska, for the past five years. Bill passed away Sunday, May 11, 2014, at his home in Tarkio, at the age of 46.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Smith. William Henry “Hank” Smith, the son of George Vernon and Edna Jaenette (McFarlane) Smith, was born April 5, 1941, in Tarkio, Missouri. Hank graduated from Tarkio High School in 1959 and attended Tarkio College for two years.

On August 24, 1963, Hank was united in marriage to Shirley K. Gilchrist. They became the parents of two daughters, Susan and Melissa, and made their home in Shenandoah, Iowa, for a year. They later divorced.

In 1964, the family returned to Tarkio, where Hank was employed by Farm and City Supply. In 1966, they moved to Ferguson, Missouri, where Hank was employed with Troop C, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, in the driver’s examination division and was later transferred to Wentzville, Missouri. After leaving the patrol, Hank was employed by Dickherber Heating and Air Conditioning and later for a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning firm in St. Louis County. In 1978, Hank returned to Tarkio and established Smith Plumbing and Heating. In 1984, Hank became the proud father of Erica Taylor. Later, Hank was employed by Northwest Missouri Industries as a rest area supervisor until his retirement. Hank enjoyed woodworking and hand crafted his grandson’s baby cradle. He was a former member of the Wentzville and Tarkio Lions Club and was a former Tarkio Volunteer Fireman and Fire Chief.

On September 15, 2001, Hank was united in marriage to Diane Littles. Diane passed away May 4, 2007. On October 23, 2009, Hank was united in marriage to Kimberly Corbin. They made their home in Tarkio to the present time. Hank passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Bryan LGH East Hospital, Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 73.

Besides his parents, Hank was preceded in death by wife, Diane. Survivors include wife, Kim, Tarkio; five children, Susan Smith and Linda Mason, Rogersville, Missouri, Melissa White and fiancée, Bob Whitehill, and Erica Taylor, all of Tarkio, Clinton Livings and wife, Leann, Oak Grove, Missouri, Krista Robinson and husband, Chris, Montreal, Missouri; twelve grandchildren, Spencer, Kelsey and Bryce White, C.J. Jean, Bryce Clark, Mychaela and Tristan Robinson, Baleigh, Caleb, Trevor, Payton and Kendra Dallas Livings; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mary Ellen Swinehart was born April 23,1907 in Arcadia, NE the daughter of George Washington and Lesta Boyer Dunkle and died at Bishop Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, NE July 6, 1992 at the age of 85 years, 2 months and 13 days.
She grew up and attended rural schools in Nebraska and Missouri, and lived in a sod house at one time.
On June 21, 1933 she married William I. Swinehart at Rock Port. They made their home in the area and were parents of three sons and three daughters.
After Mr. Swinehart died in Oct. 1963 she continued to live in Fairfax, and later she moved to the Fair Haven Apartments in Fairfax.
She was a member of the Fairfax Baptist Church, the Milton Club, and OATS, Inc. She was one of the caller for the OATS transportation program and had been honored by them for her devoted work to the organization.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and two sons, Kenneth and Wayne.
Survivors include one son and three daughters: Dale Swinehart, Fairfax; Barbara Grooms, Elwood, KS; Ruth Major, Shenandoah, IA; Joyce Stickley, St. Joseph. One brother and five sisters: Floyd Dunkle, Tacoma, WA; Blanche Neeley, Payette, Idaho; Irene Davis, Fairfax; Lucille Winstead, Rock Port; Maxine Bargman, Westboro; Florence Hindman, Neodesha, KS.; and several grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday morning, July 9 at the Fairfax Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Wes Thrush. Interment was in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax.
Pallbearers were Doyne Swan, Dean Wiley, Alva Stoner, Leon Reed, Melvin Miles, Gary Johnson.
Mrs. Bob Sefrit was in charge of the music and she accompanied Jesse Johnson who sang, "Sunrise" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere".

Turner, Joseph Byron "J.B." - Joseph Byron (J.B.) Turner, the son of Harry Otis and Edna A. (Stoner) Turner, was born July 28, 1919, in Sheridan, Missouri. He attended school in Sheridan.

On August 10, 1938, J.B. was united in marriage to Dorothy Roberta Kay in Maryville, Missouri. They became the parents of one daughter, Betty. In 1945, J.B. purchased a farm in Langdon, Missouri, which he farmed for 14 years, before moving to Rock Port, Missouri, in 1959. In 1960, he purchased the El Ray Motel in Tarkio, Missouri, which he and Dorothy owned and operated for a short time. In 1966, J.B. and Dorothy moved to the Don and Lucille Knierim farm southwest of Tarkio, where they farmed until retiring in 1974. After retiring from farming, they moved into Tarkio. J.B., not one to sit around, worked for several businesses including the Federal Crop Insurance and Torrey Pines Gas Station. He also owned the liquor store on Main Street for a short period and finally retired in the early 1980’s after working as a salesman for Fairfax Implement.

J.B. enjoyed traveling, fishing and gardening. They owned their own mobile home and traveled extensively thru the 48 continental United States regretfully never making it to Alaska or Hawaii. He was a fan of red cars and “Charlie Brown” and regularly encouraged his family to “Keep Smiling.” Dorothy passed away in 2003. J.B. passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care, Tarkio, at the age of 94.

Besides his parents and wife, J.B. is preceded in death by infant son, Curtis Turner and two sisters, Warene Parman and Bonnie Turner. Survivors include daughter, Betty Hill, Tarkio; two grandsons, Barry Amthor and wife, Joni, Tarkio, and Corey Amthor and wife, Dawn, Parkville, Missouri; four great-grandchildren, Bryan, Matthew, Jonathan and Ashleigh Amthor; one sister, Fern Parman, Grant City, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Walkup, Kenneth E. - Kenneth E. Walkup was born in Tarkio, MO to Virgil and Ruth (Currie) Walkup on September 6, 1936. He completed his primary and secondary education in Tarkio MO and attended the Tarkio College for one year. Following a summer experience with the Air Force National Guard, Kenneth changed his life direction by first marrying Shirley Ann Kemerling on October 23, 1955, and then enlisting in the Air Force in November of 1955.

Over the next 20 years, Kenneth ultimately attained the rank of Master Sergeant. Due to his specialized training in airborne weapon systems, Kenneth and Shirley found themselves being frequently transferred between military installations across the nation, and as far away as Alaska and Germany. Despite the long absences from one another due to temporary duty assignments, Kenneth and Shirley managed to find time to establish a family of 5 children; Robert, Michael, Teresa, Laurie and Stephen.

During his military career, Kenneth took great pride in his service to the nation, which ranged from the Cold War tensions of the Cuban missile crisis, to combat zone experience at Bien Hoa (Saigon) Air Force Base during the Viet Nam conflict. In the course of his career, he received multiple honors, including three Air Force Commendations, the Viet Nam Service medal and campaign ribbon, the National Defense Ribbon, and 2 Presidential Unit Citations.

He always considered that the high point of his military career was his posting to Germany, where he had occasion to train members of the German, Greek and Spanish air forces. This foreign assignment stoked within Kenneth a love for travel and experiencing different cultures and people that remained with him the rest of his life. If Germany was the high point of his military career, then Kenneth always considered his final assignment, as NCOIC (Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge) of the B-52 weapons section at Grand Forks AFB in North Dakota, to be the low point. It was at this time that he withdrew his name from promotion consideration and retired from the Air Force in 1975, after 20 years of service.

After retiring from the military, the Walkup family relocated to Tarkio where they faced the novel prospect of being in a single location for an extended time. Kenneth returned to farming with his father, and only retired again shortly before his death on February 14, 2014. During their time in Tarkio, Kenneth and Shirley built a home and completed the task of raising their family. The kids ultimately married and established families of their own. Robert (Ruth) and Stephen (Mindy) followed career opportunities in other cities, Terry and Laurie (Harold) remained locally, and Michael (Tracy) continued the family farming tradition of working with his father until his untimely death in 1991.

If Shirley was charged with the task of holding things together during Kenneth’s military service, then he reciprocated in kind for her during her struggle with cancer, which claimed her life in 2003. After her death, Kenneth for the first time in many years found himself alone. Yet, he was not destined to remain that way, and was granted a second chance at happiness by marrying Joyce Sutter in 2009. Not only did he gain a spouse, but also an extended family on her side. During the last four plus years of his life, Kenneth and Joyce travelled broadly, both domestically and internationally, and indulged their shared passion for pets.

While rarely overt in his spiritual beliefs, Kenneth became more reflective as his health slowly declined. His faith is perhaps best attested by his own lack of fear in facing his own mortality. Even as he received a negative prognosis, he jokingly commented that the family would need to keep the funeral director on speed dial. Above all, he expressed gratitude for all the experiences and lessons of his life, which was full and eventful by almost any measure. Kenneth left this life quietly and in the presence of loved ones who celebrate his life and the cherished memories and lessons he has bequeathed to us.

Welch, Beulah L. Hudson - Beulah L. Welch, the daughter of Henry O. and Effie M. (Muffley) Hudson, was born October 4, 1919, in Watson, Missouri. She attended Watson rural schools and Watson High School.

On May 10, 1937, Beulah was united in marriage to William Hersal Welch in Spickard, Missouri. They made their home in Spickard before moving to Watson in 1952. In 1954, they moved to rural Rock Port, Missouri. Hersal passed away April 15, 1974. In 1990, Beulah moved into Rock Port where she lived to the present time.

Beulah was a wonderful mother and loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, garage sales and going for rides in the country. She especially looked forward to her morning tea with her children. Beulah was baptized and a former member of the Watson Presbyterian Church. Beulah passed away Monday, March 10, 2014, at her home in Rock Port, at the age of 94. She will be dearly missed by all.

Besides her parents and husband, Hersal, Beulah was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Polly Mae Welch; two brothers, James and Donald Hudson; sister, Mary Collins; and daughter-in-law, Janet Welch. Survivors include children, Jerry Welch and wife, Joyce, Mary Finnell, Edith Beasing and husband, Harold, all of Rock Port, Sharon Hughes and husband, Joe, Tarkio, Missouri, and Gordon Welch, Farragut, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Bill and Tony Howell, Mike Welch, Clint Hughes, Lori Erickson, Lisa Yates, Shelli Sutter and Ron Welch; eleven great-grandchildren, Katie Ann, Nick, Andrew, Emily, Jase, Kyler, Alli, Alex, Aiden, Alyssa and Ryan; one great-great-grandchild, Helena; two brothers, Elbert and Delbert Hudson, both of Rock Port; and brother-in-law, Frank Welch, Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

Wharton, Thomas Martin "T.M." - Thomas Martin (T.M.) Wharton, the son of Martin Elwood and Catherine Joan (Rash) Wharton was born January 4, 1965, in Hampton Roads, Virginia. T.M. attended Rock Port High School, graduating in 1983 and Northwest Missouri State University, in Maryville, Missouri, graduating in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science degree in finance. He later attended Kansas City Community College, Kansas City, Kansas, graduating in 1995 with a mortuary science degree.

T.M. was employed by First Bank in Maryville as a loan administrator. After receiving his mortuary science degree, he was employed by Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port, for four years. T.M. was later employed by the United States Postal Service until 2005. He was a member of the Missouri Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association.

T.M. was a gifted athlete, excelling in football, basketball and track in high school. He was an accomplished golfer who enjoyed watching the game on television almost as much as playing. T.M. enthusiastically followed the Northwest Bearcats, Mizzou Tigers and Rock Port Blue Jays. T.M. passed away Friday, January 31, 2014, at his home in Rock Port at the age of 49.

Besides his parents, T.M. was preceded in death by his sister, Lisa L. Bock. Survivors include sister, Teresa Gayler and husband, Joe, Rock Port; nephew, Captain Clinton L. Gayler and wife, Mi Hee, and their daughter, Hale`iwa A., Corpus Christi, Texas; niece, Kimberly J. Nuckolls and husband, Brock, and their daughters, Kylie J. and Kinsley G., Rock Port; nephews, Tanner M. Bock, Omaha, Nebraska, and Tayler M. Bock, Columbus, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Tom Bock, Columbus; numerous cousins and countless friends.

Wray, Dennis Allen - Dennis Allen Wray, the son of Henry Herman and Goldie Marie (McNeese) Wray was born September 22, 1958, in Clarinda, Iowa. He attended school in Hopkins, Missouri.

Dennis was self-employed in residential construction. He passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 55.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include siblings, Dale Wray and wife, Donna, Pickering, Missouri, Bobby Dean Lewis, Bonnie Findley and Kaye Dye and husband, Mike, all of Windyville, Missouri; longtime companion, Sandy Devine; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be no memorial services.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 9, 1995, at the United Methodist Church in Westboro, Missouri, for Dale Harry Yost of Westboro. Reverend Rob Winger officiated. Interment was made in Center Grove Cemetery in Westboro under the direction of Davis Funeral Home of Tarkio.
Dale Harry Yost, age 77, passed away Friday, October 6, 1995, at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa. He was born November 11, 1917, in Tekamaha, Nebraska, to Thelma Beatrice (Bovee) and Harry Otis Yost. In his youth, Dale attended school in Council Bluffs, Iowa. At the age of 11, his family moved to Bartlett, Iowa, and farmed in the area.
On June 30, 1937, Dale was united in marriage to Minnie Almyra Scott in Council Bluffs. They made their home near Bartlett until the flood of 1952 forced their move. In 1954, they moved to Westboro and farmed for 20 years. Dale was employed by Dean Farnsworth Trenching until 1979 when ill health forced his retirement.
Dale thoroughly enjoyed fishing and hunting as well as wood­working. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Westboro, and a previous member of the Eagles Lodge of Nebraska City, Nebraska.
Survivors include: Dale's wife, Minnie, of the home in Westboro; three daughters, Jacqueline Ruth Apperson of Las Vegas, Nevada, Dalene Jane Yost of Des Moines, Iowa, and Paula Elaine Hauser of Springfield, Missouri; one son, Richard Dale Yost of Henderson, Nevada; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grand­children; two sisters, Mrs. Fay (Therlene) Stouder of Pacific Jet., Iowa, and Mrs. Marion (Vesta) Wredt of Nebraska City; one brother, Orlo Yost of Council Bluffs; and numerous nieces and nephews.
