COUNTY MAIL, October 6, 1881 President Garfield obituary and burial.... Thomas Angel Sr., Thomas Angel Jr., Thomas Gilkison, Marion Gray, D.A. McArthur, John Graves and John Christian arraigned for murder of Thomas Rhinehammer.... Blanchard items.... Josie Morehead the daughter of Dr and Sarah Bird, was born in Rock Port, January 21st, 1857, was raised and educated in our community; married to S.L. Morehead, January 1st, 1879; departed this life September 24th, 1881.... Her illness was quite brief, but very severe. After a few days of patient suffering, ministered to by loving hands, in spite of the most skillful treatment, she fell asleep. A large concourse of people assembled at the Methodist Church Sunday morning at 10 1/2 o'clock out of respect to the deceased. The funeral sermon was preached by D.B. Lake. At 5 o'clock that evening, all that is mortal of Josie Morehead was laid away "at rest." A sister residing in Kansas having received the sad intelligence telegraphed the friends to keep the body if possible till she could reach Rock Port. About thirty minutes before the body was interred the sister and husband came to the home of mourning. Samuel R. Taylor, administrator's notice: John Richards, administrator.... Frank Shelters came home from Deadwood last week. He says he has one serious objection to that country and that is--just ask Frank. Christena Brown, deceased; W.S. Little, executor of estate.... Guardian's notice of final settlement....Peter A. Hill, guardian of John B. Jones, Thomas J. Jones and James A. Jones, minors.... Henry B. Hall, deceased; John Richards, administrator.... James Purcell, deceased; John Richards, administrator.... THE ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, October 13, 1881 Letter about Kansas and Nebraska (not signed; to be continued next week).... County Court Proceedings - $20 to D.W. Moore for taking care of corpse of Jesse McCurdy....$5 to Miss Mollie Thompson for washing for prisoners....Stafford & Mollett present bonds for ferry license at St Deroin. License granted to keep flat boat ferry and that they pay $5 for same....L.W. Campbell, J.P., files bill and cost for inquest on body of Harry Tinker....Ordered that Amos Horner be received at poor Farm.... Final settlement of estate of Charles V. Snow.... Mrs J.H. Trask, who has been visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs Martin Greer, of Polk township, since last March, returned to her home at Topeka, Kansas, a few days ago. Mrs Devories, died quite suddenly at the residence of her husband about three miles north of this city, on last Saturday night. She was buried in the Nuckols Cemetery in the western part of the city on Sunday afternoon. Diphtheria has again come into our fair little city and carried away another victim. Mr and Mrs George F. Hughes lost a bright little boy from that terrible disease on Tuesday. Like the other cases which proved fatal this was of short duration, he being taken but a few days before his death. The fond parents have the earnest condolence of many friends and acquaintances in their bereavement. THE ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, October 20, 1881 Kansas and Nebraska journal continued from last week.... C.E. Blake's have an eight pound baby girl.... Henry Maschmeyer received the sad intelligence on last Monday evening that his mother was very ill at her home in Indiana. He left on Tuesday morning for her bedside. Another vacancy has been made in a happy family by that terrible malady, diphtheria. S.S. Hughes, the County Surveyor, lost a bright little boy on Monday from the disease. James Hopkins, son of N.O. Hopkins of Polk township, returned on Monday evening from Missouri Valley, Iowa, where for the last year or two he has been engaged in banking. MARRIED - One of the pleasantest social events of the year was the marriage of Mr Wm T. Buckham, a popular young man of this city, and Miss Belle McCollister, the beautiful and accomplished daughter of John McCollister Esq of Lincoln township. The happy event took place at the residence of the Bride's parents on Sunday afternoon, October 16th, 1881, Rev D.B. Lake, officiating. Only the near relatives of the high contracting parties witnessed the ceremony. The young couple returned to this city on Monday afternoon and we learn will make their home here.... Household recipes...tomato pudding.... THE ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, October 27, 1881 Langdon items - We learn that E.J. Summers will start to Republic County, Kansas, soon. J.M. Hopkins, son of N.O. Hopkins of Polk township, left here on last Monday to attend the State University at Columbia, Boone County, this State. He will probably be absent about six months, and of course had the MAIL sent to his address. Watson items - ... Died - Again has the death-knell been sounded in our midst. Again has there been a visitation from the pale horseman and a happy household despoiled and plunged into mourning. Little Johnny Ramsay, the son of Mr and Mrs L.D. Ramsay, has been called to the bright Realms Above...his remains were laid to rest in the Nuckols Cemetery in the south-western part of the city, on Wednesday afternoon, the 20th inst. |
