COUNTY MAIL, September 1, 1881 We are sorry to learn of the death of Mrs Sway Camp which occurred at her home in this city on last Saturday at 2 o'clock am. She was a devoted wife and mother and her loss will be keenly felt by her husband and three little children, besides a large number of friends and relatives. She was buried on Saturday afternoon. Mrs John W. Smith and her little boy, returned on last Thursday from Pike county, Illinois,--Mrs Smith's former home--where they have been visiting for this last month. We are sorry to learn of the death of Miss Mary Adington which occurred at her home near Watson last Thursday. 'Squire Kessler has sold his residence to the eastern part of town to Ed Smith. We learn that the 'Squire will locate in St Joseph. John Hale has sold his farm in Nishnebotna township, to Wm Kelly, and will take a trip to Ohio, Illinois and West Virginia in a few weeks. Nishna items - Mrs Lydia Lewis started with her son, Taylor Lewis, for Jewell Co., Kansas last week where she will make an extended visit to her son and daughter. Sheriff's Sale - Hezekiah O. Robinson, plaintiff, against Thomas Haywood, defendent... Household recipes.... THE ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, September 8, 1881 Marion Holliway and Miss Emma Fox, were married at the residence of the bride's parents near this city on Sunday Aug 28th. Prof F.R. Sykes and Miss Kate Davis were married at the Valley Church near Langdon on yesterday morning. The MAIL tenders its best wishes. Married - One of the pleasantest social events of the season was the marriage of Mr W.W. Hudgens, a popular young business man of this city, and Miss Alice M. Shelters, one of Rock Port's most accomplished belles, on Wednesday evening September 7th.... John D. Torrant, a former resident of Nishnabotna township, but now of Nemaha City Nebraska, was in town on Tuesday. He reports an unprecedented railroad boom at Nemaha. Clover Sickler, returned on Tuesday from the Black Hills. He says he left all the boys there from here in good shape and getting along very well. J.D. McNickle speaks of coming to this city in a short time. A.B. McCreary has purchased a book and notion store at Clarinda, Iowa, where he has decided to locate. Mc is a No 1 business man, a good editor and a genial whole-souled man and we wish him unlimited success in his new position. Dr Chamberlain has ....13 1/2 pound baby boy born... Foster for coffin for Thomas Bradley, a poor person...John Zulauf granted dram-shop license for six months by paying $25 to State and $37.50 to County...Nathan VanLeuven granted skiff ferry license at Scott City...J.C. Hughes files bill for inquest on body of Jesse McCurdy... Langdon Laconics - Had a wedding our parts last week, Prof F.R. Sykes and Miss Katie Davis were married at the Nishna Valley Chapel by Rev Homer Davidson, on Wednesday of last week...W.S. Dragoo returned from "bleeding Kansas" a few days ago fully imbued with the idea that Atchison county is the place to live.... Dalrymple, the wheat king of Dakota, has a rival in Dr Quinn of California. The latter owns twenty ships with which he transports his wheat to Europe. He had 45,000 acres of wheat this year. THE ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, September 22, 1881 Mrs D.B. Lake is in Nebraska and will remain there during the winter, the severe illness of her mother rendering it necessary for her to remain at her bedside. We learn of the sudden demise of old man Williams of Linden, which occurred at that place on Monday afternoon. It seems that he had been to Watson that day and returned in the afternoon in apparently his usual health. In a short time after his return he was taken sick and in less than half an hour was a corpse. President Garfield died.... Harry Tinker, adopted son of Mr and Mrs M.W. Wallace lost his life...caught clothes on fire.... |
