COUNTY MAIL, June 2, 1881 When completed, the spire of the Christian church now in course of erection here, will be the tallest in the city. H.D. Blake and L.E. Ruland, two of the boss painters of this city have secured the job of painting the new Christian Church here. The marriage of W.D. Otis and Louisa Geiger, will take place in the Methodist church, Rock Port, on Wednesday, June 8th, at 8 o'clock pm. John C. Hope, of St Joseph, and A.L. Williams, of Barnard, both former residents of this county, came up to take a look at their first love a few days ago. Mrs Hawthorne returned last week from an extended visit to the East. She was accompanied by her sister, who we learn will make her home here in future. We learn from a poster which came with last week's number of the Albany LEDGER, that Jos Massard, of this city, has opened a furniture and undertaking establishement there. We wish him success. Linden news - John Kish started for California last Saturday. We wish him success....Samuel Hiner is to be congratulated the cause is a fine baby boy weight 10 1/2 pounds; born a few days since.... Mrs Henderson, the wife of Rev George Henderson, a Christian preacher who lives about one mile west of this city, died quite suddenly on last Saturday morning. She had been complaining for several days, but was feeling a great deal better on the morning of her death, and ate a hearty breakfast although she remained in bed. Her husband went out to the stable to feed his stock and the other members of the family were in the kitchen. Finally a sister of the deceased lady went into the bedroom where she was, and, noticing that she looked strangely, she called her mother, who came into the room and ascertained that she was dead. It is supposed that she died of neuralgia of the stomach, as she has been subject to that disease for some time, and indeed her last illness was caused by it. Her funeral was preached at Pleasant Grove church and her remains laid to rest in the Millsap Cemetery, on last Sunday. THE ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, June 9, 1881 A Dastardly Deed - account of Al. Angel a prominent farmer of Clay township shot by a man named Rhineheimer.... Calvin Water was struck dead by lightning, in Andrew County on Monday of last week. A brother of A.A.J. Wanschaffe was visiting that gentleman, last week. He lives in St Joseph. Fred Hillsbeck, D.C. Fleming's boss blacksmith, returned on Monday, from a week's visit at his old home in St Joseph. At Peru, Nebr....emigrante named Clark cut his wife's throat killing her instantly... At the Angel Tragedy....more on this Linden items - Andy Linburg and Henry Shandy will move their saw mill to Hamburg, Iowa, as soon as the roads get in good condition for traveling. They will doubtless find more congenial associates up there than at Linden....A large number of emigrants are passing through town every day for Kansas and Nebraska....It seems that the Baptist of this section are bound to have a Church built at or near the High Creek school house. We learn that Mr John Stoner has offered $300 towards building it; we hope that they will succeed. Recipes for the household.... THE ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, June 16, 1881 John Decker, aged twenty-five, was drowned while bathing in the river at Forest City, Sunday. Thomas Rinehammer lynched.... Dr Jonas Crane, a well known physician of Brownville, Nebraska, died in that city, last week. J.H. Moore returned from Republic County, Kans., last week, where he went to take a herd of cattle to be grazed throughout the summer. The harness maker murdered by Clark, at Peru, a few days ago, was named E.M. Sargent. He leaves a wife and five children, but, we are glad to learn for their sake, there was an insurance policy of $2,000 on his life. Clark, the murderer, is in jail at Brownville, and is in a critical condition from the wound made in his own throat by himself. It is thought that he was crazy at the time that he committed the deed, and is yet a hopeless maniac. Wm Welch has about completed the Christian church in this city. He was assisted by Sam King, of Brownville, Neb. More about the Angel shooting.... THE ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, June 23, 1881 Linden items - Wm Smith has left for parts unknown leaving his wife and several unpaid store bills behind. We also heard yesterday that the wife of Mr Taylor the gentleman that lives on Mr Stoner's place on the Watson road had left him, verily this is a world of trouble.... A very pleasant social event took place at the residence of Nicholas Uttvitts, in Lincoln township, on the 9th inst. Dr Wm. Otis, of Tarkio, Iowa [?], and Miss Sophia Uttvitts were joined in the holy bonds of matrimony on that day, Rev. D.B. Lake, officiating. Mrs Eliza Bachelor has been appointed postmistress at Tarkio.... We unintentionally omitted last week to refer to the marriage of Mr Willard Otis and Miss Louisa Geiger, which took place in the M.E. Church, on Wednesday, the 8th inst., Rev D.B. Lake officiating. The MAIL tenders congratulations to the happy couple. Wm Morse, whose trial took place at Oregon, week before last, on the charge of killing John Taylor, at Corning last spring, was sentenced to the penitentiary for ten years. He was ably defended by Jas Osborn and L.J. Miles, two rising young attorneys of this county. Cupid's Conquest - One of the most pleasant social events of the season, was the marriage of J.C. Hunt, Esq., and Miss Emma Lane, both of this city. The ceremony took place at the M.E. Church, in this city, on last Sunday, the 19th inst., at 9 o'clock am, and was witnessed by a large number of our citizens. Long before the principals made their appearance, the church was filled with the elite of our city, and when at last Mr W.W. Hudgens and Miss Alice Shelters and Mr F.J. Joslyn and Miss Jennie Tate, the attendants, entered, followed by the high contracting parties, and the three couples marched down the aisle and took positions near the pulpit, while the organ, ably provided over, rang out an appropriate tune, the utmost interest prevailed. Rev D.B. Lake then stepped forward, such in a most beautiful and impressive manner, performed the ceremony which constituted Mr J.C. Hunt and Miss Emma Lane husband and wife. After receiving the congratulations of many friends, the happy couple and their attendants took carriages and proceeded to the home of the groom's brother, in Dale township, where a splendid reception was tendered them. The MAIL joins the many friends of Mr and Mrs Hunt in the wish that their journey along the path of life will be fraught with happiness and prosperity. MARRIED - Gillilan - Pitzer-- On June 19, 1881, at the residence of the bride's parents, in Clark township, by R.E. Christian, J.P., Mr G.W. Gillilan and Miss Laura Pitzer, all of this county. THE ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, June 30, 1881 Wm Welch and Samuel King started for the eastern part of the county on yesterday, where they will build four bridges across the Tarkio. Meredith Capper, the fourteen year old son of A. Capper, of this city, died on last Saturday night, June 25th, of diphtheria. He was sick for about three weeks and suffered intensely up to the time of his death. He was buried in the Adington graveyard, near Watson, on last Sunday. Last week we had the pleasure of meeting our old-time friend, Dr J.M. Larrabee, who some five or six years ago practiced medicine in this place. The Dr is now located at Maryville, Nodaway county, and reports a good practice. No bigger hearted, more generous or more hospitable man lives in Maryville than Dr Larrabee. MARRIED - BARNABY - HURN. At Milton, Mo., on Sunday, June 26th, 1881, by G.W. Evans J.P., Mr Charles Barnaby and Miss Ruth Hurn, all of this city. The MAIL extends congratulations to the happy couple and offers the hope that their journey down the stream of time will be one of unalloyed happiness, while peace and prosperity smiles on them and trouble will never be encountered. |
