COUNTY MAIL, January 6, 1881 Watson Pickups - James P. Morgan, of Lewis, Iowa, was visiting his brothers here last week. But was called home to attend the funeral of his brother R.P. Morgan, who had been sent back a corpse from California....Billy McNeal and family are off on a visit to his parents at Baxter Springs, Kans., they will likely remain away all winter....Peter Garst and wife had the sad misfortune to lose one of their little ones a few days ago....Mr William L. Burnham and Miss Amanda S. Thompson were married at this place on last Thursday.... E.J. Stiles' New Year's gift was a ten pound girl baby. The Tarkio Blade wielded by M. Ashbrook Kelso, will commence this week to carve its way to success. John Jenkins has moved to Richardson Co., Nebraska.... W.E. Robertson, formerly a resident of this county, but now of Nemaha Co., Nebraska, and his two daughters, Misses Belle and Lillie, are visiting relatives and friends here now. Mr L.B. Stivers, an old resident of this city, and formerly one of the leading business men here, died at his residence in this city, on last Saturday morning, at five o'clock. He has been in very poor health for the last two or three years and has been growing worse all the winter until his sufferings were ended by death as above. A terrible accident occurred at Hamburg on New Year's eve, by which Miss Kate Campbell, daughter of Mr Edward Campbell, a well known business man of St Joseph, lost her life. It seems that Miss Campbell and Miss Wood were dressing for a masquerade ball, when the latter passed too near the stove and her clothing took fire. In her fright she ran against her friend Miss Campbell and ignited her clothing also. The screams of the young ladies attracted the attention of a young man in the adjoining room who rushed in, and threw a blanket around Miss Wood and thus smothered the flames; by this time Miss Campbell was picked up and carried out and rolled in the snow, but not until she was so badly burned that death ensued in a short time. Married - BARBER - MONTGOMERY - On the evening of Wednesday, December 29th, 1880, at the residence of the bride's mother in Buchanan township, by M.H. Hatten, J.P., Mr John Barber and Miss Racheal Montgomery, all of this county. Married - TILLERY - TOWNSEND - On Sunday, December 26, 1880, at the residence of and by Rev A.S. Jones, Linden, Mo., Mr James L. Tillery and Miss Florence Townsend, all of this county. Married - HAWLET - VAN METER - On Sunday, December 26, 1880, at the residence of the bride's parents in Polk township, by Rev A.S. Jones, Mr Samuel Hawlet and Miss Irena Van Meter, all of this county. Married - BURNHAM - THOMPSON - On Sunday, January 2, 1881, at the residence of and by Stephen South, J.P., Watson, Mo., Mr William L. Burnham and Miss Amanda S. Thompson, all of this county. Public Administrator's notice - estate of John E. Cain, deceased.... THE ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, January 13, 1881 Linden items - Mr Mitch Lowe, who has been suffering for a long time with a chronic disease died on Sunday and was buried yesterday in the Linden Cemetery.... Mr Ridgeway also lost a little child last week with diphtheria. Low White, formerly of this county, but now a resident of Richardson county, Nebraska, will receive the MAIL regularly and thus keep posted in regard to the happenings here. New newspaper, Tarkio REPUBLICAN published.... A merchant of Aspinwall, Neb., by the name of Lidrow, committed suicide by hanging one day last week and thus carried out a favorite threat which he has been making for four or five years. He leaves a large family. THE COUNTY PAPER has replaced the Holt County SENTINEL..... More about the death of Miss Katie Campbell in Hamburg, Iowa.... We are sorry to learn of the death of Mrs Nancy Campbell which occurred on last Saturday night at her home near Nishna Station in this county. She was a sister of Low, Charles and William White of this county, and has lived in the county nearly ever since its organization. She lost her husband about seventeen years ago and has remained a widow ever since. She has for a number of years been a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and lived the life of a consistent Christian. She was buried at the Cemetery near High Creek Church on Monday, her remains being followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of friends and relatives. Rev. C.B. Powers will preach her funeral at the High Creek Church sometime in the near future. MARRIED - LAWSON - REEVES - On Sunday, January 2, 1881 at the residence of J.C. York, by Rev J.M. Sliger, Mr Edward Lawson and Miss Hannah Reeves, all of this county. Probate Court - estate of Franklin Snitker, deceased.... THE ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, January 20, 1881 The Barnard TIMES has been taken to Maryville. We are glad to note that it has lost none of its brightness by the change. We learn from the BLADE that a new town has been laid out east of the railroad at Tarkio. It will be called Christian City. George Burg, John Richards and George Klaus were in town last week arranging some matter in the estate of Wm Davenport. CALLED HOME - The spirit of Mrs Mary Davis took its flight for the bright realms of Eternal life on last Sunday morning. By her death a life of purity and simplicity--one fraught with many Christian deeds and noble acts, was terminated. Being possessed with a Chirsitan character and a nobleness of purpose rarely met with in this world, she had surrounded herself with friends who learned of her departure hence with the most poignant feeling of sorrow. Of her it can be truly said that "None knew her but to love her, none loved her but to praise" for her every act was tempered with a kindness and a purity of purpose which elicited the most unbounded admiration of all with whom she came in contact. Her last illness was of several days duration, and while her suffering was very intense that christian fortitude and resignation which continually shone around her path way through life never deserted her, and consoled by the contemplation of many deeds done in the service of the Master, and cheered by the blessed assurance of a Mansion in Heaven she could exclaim, "not my will but Thine Oh Lord, be done." Mrs Davis was born in Jefferson county, Kentucky, February 22nd 1838 and was at the time of her death aged 42 years 10 months and 24 days. She moved to Moultrie county, Illinois, with her parents in 1851 and July 19th 1855 she was married to Mr Frank Davis. Her father Mr Andrew Martin, of Sullivan, Illinois, was with her when she died. She leaves a devoted husband, father and mother, and four brothers. She came to this county in 1859 and has resided here ever since. Her remains were laid to rest in Greenhill Cemetery on last Monday, being followed to their last resting place by a large number of relatives and friends. THE ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, January 27, 1881 Dick Gaede is the happy father of a bouncing baby boy. Harry Baker and James Tate have their faces dressed in smiles. They are each a happy parent of a new baby. A paper has been started at Coin, Iowa. It is owned and conducted by the proprietor of the Blanchard RECORD. Taylor Lewis, of Kansas, was here last week. He was called to the bedside of his mother who was quite sick. We are glad to learn that she is recovering. Thos. Golden and sister, Miss Dora, of Nebraska City, and John Golden, of Lynn county, this State, were visiting friends and relatives here last week. The icy hand of death has made vacancies in several portions of our county within the last week. Marion Monroe, of Buchanan township, passed into eternity on last Friday. A.H. Rhodes, of Watson, one of the most prominent grain and stock men of the county, and James G. Crockett, who buys a large proportion of the grain which is taken to Farragut, Iowa, called on Tuesday. We are sorry to learn of the death of Perry York which occurred at his home in Nishnabotna township last Friday. He was a most excellent young man and a large number of friends and relatives mourn his death. The Talbott trial ... We learn from Wm Mac Holliway of the sad death of Mrs Wiley Kincanon which occurred at her home in Clarke township on last Sunday night. Her death was preceded about an hour by the death of her babe aged ten days. The mother and child were placed in one coffin and interred in the Campbell Cemetery on last Tuesday. A large number of relatives and friends are left to mourn the sad occurrence. We learned the other day of a most singular occurrence which took place near Center Point. A twelve year-old daughter of a Mr Murray was very sick with diphtheria a short time ago and to all appearances, died. She remained in such a condition for several hours and then became perfectly conscious. She then explained that she had been to Heaven, and proceeded to describe in a most beautiful and wonderful manner what she had seen. Indeed it seemed that she had been gifted with supernatural powers of description for the language she used portrayed an idea of the grandeur of the "Land Beyond" never before experienced by those who heard her. Her little brother was very sick with the same dreadful disease, when she recovered consciousness. She told them that she and her brother were both going to die soon and he would die first, and such was the case, his death preceding hers several hours. A number of persons saw the girl and heard her talk and they all unite in pronouncing it a remarkable case. Report of the Fifth Co-Operation Meeting of the Chirsitan Church of Atchison County, Mo., held January 21, 1881.... There have been two school houses burned in this county this winter, the Taylor school house, a few miles southeast of this city, and the Campton school house some ten or twelve miles northeast of here.... Watson items....Willie Campbell is off attending Cornell University at Mt Vernon, Iowa where he expects to complete his education....Wesley Eastridge, an old timer here died in Sonora a few days ago. Perry York died on last Saturday....One of those eccentric weddings that excite curiosity and tinge the occurrence with romance, took place near here on the 10th inst. Mr G.T. Boston, a prominent citizen of Watson, and Mrs Fannie Hendrix drove out in a sleigh to the residence of a J.P. where the marriage ceremony was solemnized in the most expeditious manner, without the parties leaving their seat in the sleigh, and immediately headed the team for Watson with but little more delay than required to turn around in the road. |
