ATCHISON COUNTY JOURNAL, October 14, 1882, Saturday English Grove - The funeral of Mrs Richard Waits took place on Monday, the 2d. She was past 70 years of age, and highly esteemed by all who knew her.... Mrs Wm Highland, of Saline county and her son John, have been visiting friends in this section for the past week. They left for their home on Monday last. John is 15 years old and weights 145 pounds.... Covered wagons innumerable are making their way westward, loaded with chicken coops, baggage and children. About a year from now they will be back to spend the winter with their wife's people. Westboro - ... Thomas and George Purdum, of Alma, Kansas, came home this week in answer to a telegram announcing the severe illness of their father. ATCHISON COUNTY JOURNAL, October 21, 1882, Saturday Married - At Snyder's Hotel, by Judge F. M. Loslyn, Oct 18, 1882 Wm N. Boyer to Lucy J. Ware. All of Atchison county. Trustee's Sale of Willard and Annie Blevins.... The sweet little child of Mrs Eiler, was scaled to death last Thursday afternoon. A bucket of boiling water had been place on the floor, and while some other matters called the mother's attention, the child crawled up and pulled the bucket over, causing the water to cover the child from head to foot. The little one lived a few hours and passed quietly away. Mrs Eiler has the sympathy of the entire community.--HOLT COUNTY PAPER List of items put in the corner stone of the new court house.... J.M. Westboro - ... Langdon - Watson - Mr Samuel Marrs, formerly a resident of Sonora, but now a prosperous business man of Carthage, Mo is here visiting relatives. Trustee's sale of Wesley D. and Louisa Wheeler; Henry and May Hickey; ATCHISON COUNTY JOURNAL, Nov 18, 1882, Saturday Linden - English Grove - Westboro - On Wednesday, Nov 8th, at Maryville, Mr Dwight Bower and Miss Maggie Daniels, of this city, were united in the bonds of matrimony.... On Sunday morning last a quiet wedding took place at the German Lutheran Church of this city. Rev Poeverlin joined in holy wedlock Mr Herman Schubert and Miss Phillipena Bischof. The groom is an industrious farmer and highly esteemed by all his neighbors. The bride is the handsome daughter of our fellow-townsman, Geo L. Bischof, Esq. John Stevens an old bachelor aged 62 years, who lived by himself in a hut near the dwelling of James C. Garrett in Grant township, was found dead last Saturday at his home. As he had not been seen around his home for some time it was thought he might be sick and James C. Garrett, Alex Thompson and James Ince went to this hut to see what was the matter when they found the old recluse dead. An inquest was held on the remains by 'Squire Monier, the jury returning a verdict that the deceased had died a natural death. Stevens has a number of relatives in this county.--NODAWAY DEMOCRAT Langdon - Dr R. Buckham left for Los Angeles, Calif. He will remain all winter in the hope of regaining his health. Died - Mrs G.D. Evans died at her home in the English ward, Sunday morning at six o'clock. in the 83r? year of her age. She was a most excellent Christian woman and a most devoted mother. The funeral took place from the residence, Monday and many relatives friends and acquaintances followed the remains to their last resting place. Mrs Evans had resided in Falls township and in the Eighth ward for more than forty years...--ZANESVILLE, OHIO COURIER, Nov 1. ... The subject of the above notice was the mother of Mrs Nelson O. Hopkins jr of Westboro in this county. Mrs Hopkins arrived at the old home (being summoned by telegram) just in time to minister to a loving mother in her last hours, and to witness her triumphant departure to the spirit world. ... Home and farm column --- ATCHISON COUNTY JOURNAL, Nov 25, 1882 Watson - Jas McNeal has deeded his old home farm near this place to Mr Fred Garst. This farm contains 225 acres and is one of the best in this vicinity. Mr McNeal has bought a farm of about three hundred acres near Holden, in Johnson county, Mo., and expects to removed to it in February. Mr McNeal is an old and highly respected citizen here and the best wishes of his old neighbors follow him to his new home. Linden - ... John Hasness has new son... Uncle Jere Purdum's serious illness has affected his mind to some extent and his friends deemed it advisable to take him to the asylum. He realizes that his mind is not right and was perfectly willing to undergo medical treatment. He was taken to St Joseph on Tuesday. Benton - ATCHISON COUNTY JOURNAL, December 2, 1882, Saturday Westboro - Langdon - John Stackhouse has moved to Marshall, Mercer county. He expects to return in the spring. Asa Rupe has a son... Westboro - W.D. Otis has new daughter.... English Grove items - A.M. Purdum came in from Idaho Territory last week to see his father. He has invested in that famous country and expects to return as soon as the health of his father will permit his leaving. Langdon - ATCHISON COUNTY JOURNAL, Dec 9, 1882 Dotham - Langdon - L.H. Ruland departed for New York on Sunday last to visit his brother J.W. Ruland, whom he has not seen for three years.... The family of Prof Campbell were called upon to mourn the death of Mr George B. Sandford, father of Mrs Campbell, on Saturday night last. This worthy old gentleman had lived a few years beyond the average life of man, and died at the ripe old age of 73. The funeral services were conducted by Rev Ismond at 10 am on Monday morning. The remains were laid away to rest in the Nuckolls cemetery. The ghost of a horse thief, who hanged himself in the Clarinda jail, is said to haunt that structure. A darky who occupies the cell is nearly frightened out of his senses. Sheriff made a raid on lewd women's house in Rock Port.... Linden - Mr Geo Klaus' little child, aged 5 months, died last Sunday of diphtheria.... Philip Snyder and wife of Brighton, Iowa, spent several days with the formers brother, Uncle Dan. Phillips Kessler formerly of here but now of ST Joseph, dropped in to see editor. Robert Roe of Detroit, Mich visiting his brother Tom. Charles Renner Jr arrived last Tuesday from Dakota in response to a telegram announcing the serious illness of his father. He arrived too late, however to see his father alive, as he breathed his last the morning preceding his son's arrival. Gone to his Rest - Charles Renner died at his home in Rock Port on Tuesday, December 5th, 1882, at 11 o'clock am., surrounded by his friends and family except his only son, Charlie, who did not arrive from the Black Hills until several hours after his father death. In the death of Charles Renner rock Port has lost one of its best citizens....His body was burried at Green Hill cemetery on Thursday morning, Rev L. Poeverlin, officiating. Married - At the residence of and by A.B. Benedict, J.P, Dec 3, 1882, Mr Kansas Vanmeter to Miss Ella Gooch. All of Atchison county. ATCHISON COUNTY JOURNAL, December 16, 1882, Saturday Westboro - Watson - Linden - We learn from a reliable source that a boy of Lloyd Mason's died last Wednesday of trichina, and that two other children are in a precarious condition and liable to die at any moment. A small piece of the pork was placed under a strong magnifying glass and it was....very infected.... BROWNVILLE REPUBLICAN A paper was in circulation in this city during the week asking money to send Mrs Martha Thompson and family to the home of her parents in Des Moines, Iowa. She is the wife of Jesse Thompson, formerly a barber in this city, who deserted her some time during the summer. It is reported that he was sent to the penitentiary from Buchanan county for a term of five years. We do not know what crime he committed, but a man that will desert his wife and helpless children deserves no better treatment. English Grove items - E.J. Crandall and Frank Burdick started for Grand Haven, Mich, Tuesday. They came from there over a year ago and think they like Michigan better than Missouri. ATCHISON COUNTY JOURNAL, December 23, 1882, Saturday Westboro - .... Langdon - Geo Deuser has new daughter.... Sheriff Oliver spent a few days in Clarinda, Iowa, this week and succeeded in capturing Isaac Norris, alias [italic] Joseph Wade.... R.R. Steel of Kirksville has a new son.... We learn from the COLORADO METHODIST of the death of Daisy Kern, adopted child of James W. Kern and wife, who formerly kept the Rock Port Hotel. ... Married - At the residence of and by Rev W.P. Logan, Mr Phillip McClain to Miss Susan Miller. All of Dale township. Died - Mrs Mary VanGundy died very suddenly of heart disease Sunday morning, Dec 17, 1882. She had not been sick for months, and felt unusually well that morning. About 9 o'clock she complained of feeling bad and layed down, but insisted on the young folks going to Sunday School, leaving only Mr VanGundy and one daughter at home. About 11 o'clock he was attracted by her drawing one or two heavy breathes, and when on springing to her side, he found himself in the presence of death. His horror and grief may be better imagined than described....Mary Ann Jones was born in Ross county, Ohio, May 12, 1832? Was married to John VanGundy March 31, 1853? Removed to Atchison county, Mo., in the year 1858, where they have since made their home near Milton....She leaves a devoted husband, two sons and four daughters, all grown, who feel that they have been bereft of their dearest earthly friend....services at Milton and laid to rest in the Milton cemetery...this is blurry.... ATCHISON COUNTY JOURNAL, December 30, 1882, Saturday Langdon - Benjamin Giphard has new baby... Westboro - Watson - Mrs Berry York, sister to John and Jack Brown, is here visiting her relatives. Mrs York lives near Bethany, Harrison county, Mo where her husband owns and operates an extensive stock farm.... Mrs Jane Sly, wife of John F. Sly, died on Tuesday morning, Dec 25, of consumption. Age, 52 years, 1 month, 15 days. Charley, son of Chris and Mary Stall, drank lie [sic] and could not be helped...2 years 4 months 18 days...SAVANNAH DEMOCRAT Married - At resdience of bride's parents, by Rev John Zuck, Sunday, Dec 24, Mr Andrew Silence to Miss Jane Cunningham.
