ATCHISON COUNTY JOURNAL, May 14, 1881 Saturday Our Atchison county people claim that much of the back water with which we have been troubled this spring, is caused by the stone pier put in the Nishna b the K.CC. railroad company in building the new bridge near the state line; causing an obstruction to the flow of water in the stream--Fremont TIMES The citizens of Hamburg are convinced at last that the diking of the Nishna at the narrows caused them no trouble whatever with back water. When the diking gave way under the heavy pressure of the flood; the back water at Hamburg was not lowered one half an inch. We think the proposed canal is the only way in which Hamburg can be benefited. Letter from G.D. Todd in Deadwood, SD.... Westboro - Westboro is still on the boom. Polk Township tattle - On Monday last we formed the acquaintance of Mr James Low, one of Atchison county's most enterprising farmers and stock raisers. He has about one thousand acres of fine prairie land, and last winter he wintered about 400 head of cattle. He is summering about 300 head of young stock and is feeding 112 head more. Although nearly three score years of age he had on Monday taken a walk of ten miles and felt not the least bit fatigued. Mr Low's farm is near the Centennial Church and about two and oen-half miles distant from Linden. The County Court last week appropriated $100 for the purpose of sending Thos Jennings and family to Tennessee. Jennings is troubled with crazy spells and when the affliction comes on him he is quite dangerous. Last winter he wanted to burn his children as a sacrifice, and it took the united efforts of four men to prevent him from doing so. He was twice sent to the asylum at St Joseph for treatment, and received but little if any benefit. His mother thought if she only had him home among his own people he would be greatly benefited if not entirely cured. At her earnest solicitation and by the request of his connections here, the appropriation above mentioned was made. He and his family left for the home of their childhood on Tuesday. It is our unpleasant duty to chronicle the accidental death of Edward Smith, a 16-year old son of our old-time friend Geo F. Smith, which occurred last Saturday. At the time of the accident the boys were plowing and had sat down on their plow beams to rest, when Edward remarked to his brothers that he was going to shoot a black bird with his revolver. Those were the last words of the unfortunate boy. After hearing the report, one of the boys went back and found him still sitting on the plow, while the blood flowed rapidly from his forehead at which place the ball had entered. He was taken to the house and in a very few minutes his spirit passed to the mysterious beyond. The County Court has ordered an appropriation of $3,200.00 to build a bridge across Nishna on the site of the Morgan bridge. This will be good news for the people in the Watson neighborhood.
