The Hamburg Reporter, Hamburg, Iowa, Friday, February 6, 1914 |
Another veteran of the Civil War has answered the last roll call. Also one of the early settlers of Fremont county and for the past two years a resident of Hamburg. James Tarpenning was a native of St Joseph county, Indiana, the date of his birth being March 12, 1841. When quite a young man he came with his parents to Cedar county, Missouri, but when only ten years of age his parents took up their abode three miles north of Thurman and there built a home that was noted far and wide for charity. In August 1862 the subject of this sketch enlisted in Company B 29th Iowa Infantry and served his country until the close of the war when he was honorably discharged at Davenport, Iowa and returned home to take up agriculturists pursuits. On December 17, 1868 he was united in marriage to Miss Ritty Darby at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs James Darby three miles west of Tabor. To this union two children were born, namely; Sarah C. and James L. The former, Mrs Turnbull, has been her father's housekeper since the death of the wife and mother September 28, 1910. James L. resides at Tabor. Deceased leaves one brother, Lyman Tarpenning of Fordyce, Ark., who was present during the last days of a year's sickness. It had been nine years since these brothers had met until Lyman was called here two weeks ago. A short service was held at the home on Tuesday morning after which the remains were taken to the Union Grove cemetery near Northboro in Page county and there laid to rest in the family lot. Funeral services were conducted by Rev B.H. Coonradt of the Christian church. Mr Tarpenning was an honest truthful man and a good citizen. [picture] |

Matilda Wisenberger was born in Atchison county, Missouri, February 25, 1885 and died in the Woodson Sanitorium at St Joseph, Mo., Wednesday, January 28, 1914. She continued to live at the place of her birth until 8 years ago last Nov 14 on which date she was joined in marriage to Claud Brown. They established a home on the Brown farm in Madison township which continued to be her home until the day of her death. Mrs Brown was the mother of three children with names and ages as follows: Claudia Irene, age 7 years, Helen Leon, age 5 years and William Woodrow, 4 months old the 13 day of Janaury 1914. Mrs Brown was a member of the Roman Catholic church in which faith she continued until her death. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, three children, her parents, Mr and Mrs Matt Wisenberger, three sisters and four brothers, besides other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral service was held at Mt Olive church last Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev B.H. Coonradt officiating. The presence of a host of people and the exceptionally large number of beautiful floral tributes and the demonstration of universal grief bespoke volumes for the respect in which the deceased was held by a large circle of acquaintances. |

Word was received here Tuesday that W.J. Roberts, of Red Oak, passed away very suddenly. He was a brother of Mrs C.C. Fisher and Frank Roberts of this city and was quite well known here. The funeral services were held Thursday. |
As Thursday was the 88th birthday of William Knappe his daughter Lucy arranged for a family dinner in honor of the event. None but the immediate family were present and a most enjoyable time was had. Mr Knappe is one of the early settlers of this section and lived for over 58 years on his farm north of town. After he came to this country from Germany he worked as a machinist in several places coming here from St Louis. Coming up on the boat he met Uncle Jimmie Spicer and in conversation with him learned that land could yet be purchased in Fremont county at a low price, so acting upon Mr Spicer's advice he got off at the landing and later purchased the old home place which he owned until a year or two ago. Having been bred a mechanic, he was entirely unacquainted with farming operations and had everything in this line to learn. Nothwithstanding his many mistakes during his earlier attempts in the management of his farm, he patiently and persistently continued the work and soon acquired the aptitude in it necessary to a high degree of success. To his original purchase, he was soon enabled to make acquisitions until he at one time owned 500 acres of Fremont county's best land, had it well stocked and had everything around him necessary to comfort and quiet enjoyment for something over a year he and his daughter Lucy have been living in town. |
