Hello Kathy - Thank you for transcribing this census.
It is much appreciated. I hope to eliminate one of your question marks. You have listed Prader, Alexander - 554#360 Benton Township Part I and Prader, Mary 554#360. I think this last name could be Prater. They may be related to my great great grandmother Sarah Hinton Prater May, on Benton Township Part II. 556#380. In 1850 the family of Wiley and Sarah May was located in Appanoose Co., Iowa, Center Township. Sarah's first husband was Asa Prater. Joy Guentert Roseville, California |
February 08, 2002 9:45 PM Hi Joy, Went to my family file and pulled up Prater..found a number of them, mostly in NC, but a few in Atchison. They have been seen listed as Prater or Prather. Didn't find Alexander Prater listed in the Gone, But Not Forgotten book though. I did notice that a Prater had married a James Walkup..Do you know anything abt them? Went back to the original CD, blew up the image again, still looks like Prader or possibly Praeder...but this guy, John W. Smith, had a habit of dropping the crossbar off his t's, or making his t's look like undotted i's if there was an h next to it...in which case he crossbarred the h!! If they only knew the problems this would cause later... I have a Wiley May in my system as well...I am related one way or another to an awful lot of people in Atchison Co.. My father was born at his grandmother's farm home in Tarkio. I've never been there that I recall. My father tells me I was there when I was abt 3. Would be interested in your lines there. Will give you whatever may be of interest to you. Thanks again for taking the time to point out the possibilities.. Kathy |

Census Bent Hi Kathy - Will start with my direct line to the May family in Atchison Co. There is me, Marilyn Joy Tucker Guentert, my mother, Gertie May, born Dec. 26 1908 in Barry Co., Missouri, died 1998 Placer Co., California, my grandfather Daniel May born July 24, 1870 in Missouri (I believe Atchison Co.,) died 1929 Barry Co., Missouri, my great grandfather, John Russell May, born Sept 1840 or 1839 in Greenville, Bond Co., Illinois, died Feb 19, 1919 in Barry Co., Missouri, great great grandfather Wiley May born May 01, 1815 in Alabama or Tennessee (most of us believe Alabama) died April 20, 1887 in Atchison Co., Missouri. Here is a little more info on his children that is not included in the attachment. I did not do the research on Wiley and Sarah and their children. Most of it was done and passed on to me by other descendants. I have since been trying to confirm most of it for myself. Alexander May Born 1840 in Illinois, John Russell May, my great grandfather, married Elizabeth Jane Kimbro in 1866 Bond Co., Ill., Mary (Mollie) May born 1843 Illinois, Cynthia May, born 1846 Illinois, William Moses May, b. 1848 in Illinois, married Emily Bradley in Rockport, Mo., Emeline Jane May b. 1849 married John Henry Morrow, Betsy Jane May, b. 1850, Iowa, Harriett May, b. 1852 Iowa, Sara Francis May b. 1854 in Iowa married John Johnson Eilers in Atchison Co., Mo., died 1937 in Norfolk, Madison, Nebraska, Elijah Newton May b. 1858 in Iowa died Aug. 6, 1910 in Atchison Co., Martha Louda May born 1864, Atchison Co., Missouri, died 1931 in Atchison Co., married Henry Beeman King, Wiley Edmond May b. 1865 in Missouri, Amanda May born 1867 in Missouri. Sarah Hinton Prater May's first husband was Asa Prater, they were married in 1839. Asa Prater also had a previous marriage. At this point we do not know the name of Wiley's previous wife or wife's, the death cert. of John Russell May, my great grandfather, states his mother is unknown. I am very interested in finding out who John R.'s mother was. I am interested in filling in all the holes in the info on Wiley's children and also finding more descendants. I have sent to the Historical Society for the obit of Martha Louda May King. Any info along these lines would be very helpful to me. Also the Appanoose Co., Iowa 1850 census lists Alexander May as being 10 years old and Mary May age as 7 years. John Russell is listed as age 8 years. These 3 oldest children were from either Wiley's or Sarah's previous marriage. It is all very confusing. Hope I have not over loaded you with info you did not want or need. Thanks for your interest.
