ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, Rock Port
25 Feb 1887 - A STOCKMAN'S UNTIMELY DEATH - W. R. Walkup, a farmer and shipper living at Fairfax, Missouri, lost his life yesterday evening in front of the main entrance to the stock yards.  It is the old story -- two trains passing in opposite directions.  Mr. Walkup had waited for a north-bound freight to pass, then hurriedly stepping across the track was caught by the P & Ft. W. dnmmy, {that's how that word was spelled} which was passing in the other direction.  He was knocked down, his body across the track, and horribly crushed.  His remains were taken to the morgue, where an inquest was held.  He has been a shipper for a number of years, was about 45 years old, and leaves a family to mourn his loss.    -- CHICAGO LIVE STOCK REVIEW

TARKIO AVALANCHE
Mr. Walkup was well known in this county, having been born and raised here.  He was a son of Samuel Walkup who settled in an early day be the Missouri bluffs just north of the present home of Judge John F. Sly.  He was for several years engaged in the harness and saddlery business at Milton.  When Fairfax started up in 1881 he moved there and engaged in the general mercantile business with W. H. Walker, under the firm name of Walker and Stouffer.  Going out of that he engaged in the stock business which he followed up to the time of his death.  His body arrived at Fairfax Thursday and was buried Friday in the Campbell cemetery.  The funeral was preached in the Campbell C.P. church of which he was a member.  A wife and two children are left to mourn his loss to whom the AVALANCHE extends heartfelt
sympathy.
James C. Trout was with Mr. Walkup when he was killed and came near being caught in the same accident.  They were crossing over to get their tickets to come home and while the unfortunate man jumped forward to pass in front of one engine and was caught by another coming from another direction.  Mr. Trout happened to see the danger in time to halt.

Obit of James Walkup (1822-1898), supplied by Floyd Schooler (abridged)
James was born 13 November 1822 in Boone Co., Missouri and died in Fairfax, Atchison Co., Mo., 26 November 1898. He grew to manhood in his native county.  When about 22 years of age was married to Miss Caroline Tuck of the same county.  In Jan 1845 he came to Buchanan Co., where he made his home until 1848.  While in Buchanan Co. two children were born to them, one died an infant, the other, Thomas Walkup, survives, and is a citizen of this county (Atchison).  In 1846 he entered army in war against Mexico and with Col Donighan marched across the plains to Santa Fe and into Mexico, returning at the close of the war in September 1847. Two days after his return, his wife died leaving the one child, Thomas.
On March 23, 1848 he married 2nd Miss Lydia Woodhouse, of Buchanan Co., Mo. a native of North Carolina.  With wife and child he left immediately after his marriage and came to Holt Co. and settled on a farm in the Missouri river bottom below where is now the town of Craig.  Here he lived some 12 years until March 1860 when he moved to Atchison county and opened up a farm which is known as Walkup's Grove, taking its name from our departed friend.  He remained there until 1865 when he returned to Holt Co. on a farm along the bluffs, just east of Craig, but holding and managing his farm at the Grove.
In 1871 he returned to the Grove where he made his home until October 1895, when he moved to Fairfax and lived here until his death.  Besides a host of friends, he leaves his aged widow, three sons and three daughters and a number of grandchildren.  By his second wife he had eight children, three sons and five daughters.  The three sons, George, Hial (Albert Riley) and James survive.  Of the five daughters the oldest Mary, and youngest, Caroline, are dead.  The living; Mrs. Sarah Kelly, Mrs. Eliza Carter and Mrs. Martha Bryan.
