Emily J. is Emily J. Howell from Meigs County Ohio. They were married
on June 7, 1862 They had 8 children according to the History of Atchison
County, Clay Township, page 713. (Children's names given in the mentioned article
are Emma, Effie, Bertha, Ora, Frank L., Michel, Marcus and Irvin. Children from other list are Meno, who died inside a month of her birth, Myrtle E., Grace M., and Lilley E. )
Maurice LaFonte, the volunteer photographer of these monuments, would like
to give his personal thanks to Captain George Steck and his family, as they
were, and to those who may be living today, wherever they may be,
for their unknowing, but special gift to me. Capt. Steck and his family took
my father off an orphan train from New York City, sometime in the earliest
years of the 1900's, and gave him a good home and a chance in life.
My Father, Joseph Anthony LaFonte, made good use of that opportunity
and grew up to be a model of a "good man". I will always be grateful.
