Census Greetings: I thought I would send you a short note to thank you for transcribing the 1880 census pages for Atchison County, Missouri that I found posted at rootsweb. The N.B. Merritt who served as enumerator for E.D. 1 was Napoleon Bonaparte Merritt. The A.R. Merritt at the top of page 341A was his brother Andrus Richardson Merritt. I have quite a bit of information on both families. After their father Lewis Howell Merritt died on March 8, 1880 in Atchison County, the family members eventually moved back to Duluth, Minnesota and most relatives stayed in that area. The N.B. Merritt city park in Duluth is named after Napoleon. Both N.B. Merritt and Andrus Merritt became famous later in life as part of the "Seven Iron Men" of Duluth for their discoveries and mining of iron ore near Duluth. Sincerely, Ron Merritt Yanbu, Saudi Arabia |
