Does anyone out there have any information on Hobb's Company, 2nd Northeast Missouri Cavalry, C.S.A. The regiment was commanded by Colonel Cyrus Franklin. Captain Joshua Hobb's, I think, was captured in late 1862. I am especially interested in any accounts describing their involment in the war, including the raid on Canton and the Battle of Kirksville. My wife Cathy is a direct descendant of Second Lieutenant Samuel Ewalt, of Hobb's Company. Ewalt came from a well to do Southern Family in LaBelle, Lewis County, Missouri. He had five other brothers serving in the Confederate cause, two of which were KIA. Samuel, whose mother, Ketturah Stamps Ewalt, was a sister-in law of Jefferson Davis. Any information on Samuel Ewalt, especially a photograph, would be appreciated. Samuel lived 1831 to 1898. He had made the trip to California during the Gold Rush in 1852. He married Martha Jane Wilson in 1859. They had several children, my wife's direct ancestor being Kitty Lou, who was born in 1864. Samuel had accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior in 1860. He was very active in the church and supported a church run orphanage in Canton. His widow died as the result of an automibile accident near Cody, Wyoming in 1917. Any details on Samuel Ewalt or his Confederate brothers would be appreciated. Thank you.

I recently did a search on MO-CW archives and found some very helpful and sympathetic information regarding Sam Hildebrand taken from http://rosecity.net/cherokee/guerrilla.html. The story implies strongly that Sam was at least part Cherokee but doesn't come right out and say so. It states that the white men, in the case Firman McIlvane, used the "Old Mule Trick" on Indians. Is it your opinion then, that Sam was at least part Cherokee? And if so, what of his wife, Margaret Hampton, my Great Grandfather's Aunt? Was she also at least part Cherokee? Desoto Joe says there are still direct descendants out there that I would like to hear from.

I know that Augustus LaPee born in Washington County Missouri on October 14, 1832 and married Adalaide Eleonore Charbonneau in 1852. He served in both the Confederate Union Armies in Missouri. My question is does anyone know or have any idea why he served in both armies. He serveid first in the Union from August 11, 1862 until October 26, 1862 when he was mustered out in Richwoods MIssouri. He was in the 32nd Reg't Company B under Captain Wilkinson. The he was enlisted in the Cofederate Army sometime after that because he was listed as being in Freeman's Regiment, Missouri Cavalry and was a POW from October 31, 1864 until April 13, 1865 in Rock Island Illinois Military Prison. Was it normal for a soldier to serve in both armies.

Ware 27th Infantry and then also as Captain. My photo is of CHARLES WARE who was from IA in 1860. His son's family was in Dade and Barton Co., MO after the Civil War. Could any of these men have Charles as a middle name? My CHARLES WARE was b. in PA in about 1812 and was in IL in 1850 and Iowa 1860. He did not return to IA after the war and is not buried with the rest of the family in Guthrie Co., IA. Any information on WARES in MO would be appreciated. My grandmother was b. in Dade Co. MO. It seems the family kept going back and forth between MO and IA. CHARLES WARE was NOT in an IL unit or an IA unit. Does anybody have rosters of these units. Thanks very much.

I have been searching for any document that could give me more information about my ancestor of USCT that fought in the Civil War. There is no record of him in the Archives of Washington or Missouri. I have a feeling his records were destroyed because he was located in the 1890 census stating his infantry. I think i read somewhere that the information was lost and the census takers at that time ask who was in the civil war and the information. I guess they took his word for it because he was receiving a pension according to his obituary. Do you think you could provide me with aany avenue of information. Thank you.

I am trying to verify my grandfather's service in the Cofederate Army. According to his pension application, he served in Co. E, 10th Missouri Infantry Regiment under Brig.Gen M.M. Parsons and Col. W.M. Moore. His name is John David Cockerham and was born in Union Co., Arkasas. He was living at Three Creeks, Union Co., Ar. when he entered the service in 1864. He served till the War ended.I'm sure all his time was spent in Arkansas while the 10th Missouri was involved in the Red River Campaign.Col. Moore was listed as wounded at the Battle of Jenkins Ferry, in Arkansas. I have been trying to locate rolls of enlisted personnel who served in The 10th Missouri while it was in the District of Arkansas but have not had much luck yet. John David Cockerham's application was rejected. It was submitted in 1930. His name was mis-spelled and I think this contributed to the rejection. The last name was spelled Cocherham. John David died in 1934 and is buried in Tarrant County, Texas. He was born in 1845, Union County, AR. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. Jim

I'm wondering if you can help me. I'm searching for my g-g-grandfather, who never returned from the Civil War. His name was Shird W. Watson (or a variation thereof), his residence was Randolph County in northeastern Arkansas, and he served in Kitchen's 30-day unit in Arkansas from November 18 to December 18, 1861. This unit was not involved in any fighting during this period. His name does not appear in any other Arkansas > lists, and it is believed that he, like many others in northeastern Arkansas, went to Missouri after this 30-day period. I have a letter from > him dated March 28, 1862 which does not state where he is located, but does indicate that he was fighting on the Confederate side. My question is this: Is there a comprehensive list of soldiers fighting in Missouri? If not, where is a good place to begin looking for him online (I'm in Seattle)? I already have information on his parents and family.I am simply trying to find out what happened to him, and hopefully wherehe's > buried. Any information you can provide will be most helpful and greatly appreciated. Please respond to me at both this address and ScotStout@aol.com> . Thank you, Scot Stout

Hopefully you can help me. I am searching for info on my great grandfather, Andrew J. Coffey. First he served in the MO Home Guard until the fall of 1861 when he joined Colonel John S. Phelps regiment and was stationed at Rolla most of the time.At the end of his term of enlistment he served again in the Missouri State militia and then in the (5th) Prov. Reg. until the spring of 1864. From there he was detailed home and then in the fall of 1864 he joined the 46th MO Inf. as second lieutenant of Company I or 1 (this is not clear) in Ozark county and Springfield most of the time. After the war he was made sherrif of Ozark county and at the election of 1866 was selected to the office for two years and again in 1874. In 1884 he was elected to the legislature on the Dem. ticket and served on the committees on Retrenchment and Reform and county boundries. As you can see he must have been a popular and well known man, but I am unable to find his name and/or any of his 19 childrens names in any of the Coffey genealogy sites I have searched. There just doesn't seem to be much info on this branch of the family and that seems odd to me. If you can help with his service record in any way it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You Sincerly Sherri (Coffey) Robbins P.S. I can also be reached at robbins_sherri@hotmail.com

Subject: Buchanan Co Veteran Query I saw the message about your granddaughter. I hope she is doing better. My query regards Samuel D. FERRILL. The only information I have is: The lady who in 1849 became the wife of Mr. Gann was Miss Polly, the daughter of Samuel D. FERRILL, who had the honor of being Colonel of the first regiment ever mustered in Buchanan County. I am displaying my ignorance of history, but I don't see records for Missouri being in the War of 1812 nor Indian Wars. Was the first regiment mustered for the Civil War? And, if so, do you have any records on Samuel D. FERRILL? I appreciate any information you can provide. Thank you, Linda Bohn

My father (age 92) grandfather was in Libby Prison during the Civil War from Indiana. He went to the Osage Beach area and bought land on Horseshoe Bend for health reasons as he had health problems and set up medical practice > on Horseshoe Bend and the Camden/Miller area. He died suddently in July 1902 during a flu epidemic and was buried at the Riverview Cemetery acorss from an Italian Restaurant in a raodside cemetery. The marker is gone and we wanted to have a military VA stone erected hopefully before my father passes on. His name was James Lafayette Conner. His widow Mary Conner sold the land to a Downing in 1903 and it is in the court records. What would you suggest? Is there smeone who might help get a stone up for him. The man with the highway dept. said the Civil War groups might want to know becaue they put up flags for veterans on Memoral Day. What do you think?

He married Nancy Woodcock in 1863. They had a son named William in 1866. Family tales suggest that he was > an innocent bystander at a card game on his way back from the Civil War and was killed.
